Smart #5 EHD Plug-in Hybrid: 1,600km Range Tested!

Most people already know the Smart brand From the classic ForTwo to the newer #1 and #3 Smart cars have always been known as stylish city rides Whether it’s their tiny models or the electric ones they’ve always had a limited range But that’s about to change We’ve got the newest model right here the Smart #5 EHD plug-in hybrid When it comes to looks not much has changed The only real change is this new exterior trim After all, it needs air intake and cooling now Besides that, the capsule-style dual screens and the zero-gravity seat for the front passenger are all still here The car we’re reviewing today is the smart #5 EHD the plug-in hybrid model Officially, it has a range of over 1,600 kilometers So you never have to worry about range Today, let’s find out just how worry-free this car can be We drove from Beijing, through Cangzhou, and reached Dezhou The trip was just over 412 kilometers It was basically all highway driving A/C at 24°C, fan on level 2, and three of us in the car We used the intelligent hybrid mode in power mode with low regenerative braking Fuel consumption was just over 5.6 liters per 100 km Power consumption was 3.1 kWh per 100 km I’m really happy with these efficiency numbers Remember, this car is 4.8 meters long It’s a true mid-size SUV If you’re looking to save more then you’ll need to choose the pure electric model Apart from its great efficiency I was also surprised by its power options Depending on the driving conditions it automatically switches between power modes Like in city stop-and-go traffic it runs on electric power first At higher speeds the engine running directly is much more efficient It’s a smart setup No need to worry or do anything yourself Speaking of starting the engine there’s something every plug-in hybrid needs we’ve got to mention NVH With this car, you only notice it when the engine kicks in You feel a bit of vibration and hear a slight noise Once it’s running, you barely notice anything I feel like the wind noise is even more noticeable Be it from the frameless doors or the wind coming in through the windshield it’s pretty obvious That’s probably because of its boxy shape which naturally comes with a few trade-offs As for the powertrain and chassis, which Smart is known for there’s not much else to say It performs just as you’d expect—smooth and mature It’s exactly what you think it’ll be Finally, a few words about the NSP smart driving system We took it for a spin on the highway From controlling speed to keeping a safe distance staying centered in the lane, choosing the right lane and dealing with tricky situations like cars cutting in the car handled it all pretty well The only small hiccup was when a car passed on the left The car would suddenly hit the brakes almost like it got spooked by the passing car and just reacted out of surprise This can be sorted out easily with an OTA update After a day behind the wheel I feel like the smart #5 EHD is the one that really suits this car A big SUV like this is great for family trips And it’s got driver assist too And best of all, you don’t have to worry about range And the starting price is only 169,900 yuan Feeling tempted
