High-performance driving and electric efficiency are often considered competing engineering goals. However, Audi bridges this gap with the unveiling of its first high-performance plug-in hybrid models: the RS 5 Sedan and RS 5 Avant.
The vehicles visually reflect Audi’s motorsport heritage. Measuring 3.5 inches wider than the base model, they feature a three-dimensional honeycomb grille, matte oval tailpipes, and checkered-flag signature headlights.
Beneath the aggressive exterior lies an equally powerful hybrid powertrain that pairs a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with a 130-kW electric motor, delivering about 630 horsepower. This configuration allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds, while also offering up to 54 miles of all-electric city driving.
To enhance handling and stability, the platform utilizes a world-first electromechanical torque vectoring unit integrated into the rear transaxle. This Dynamic Torque Control system continuously distributes power between the rear wheels, maximizing traction and stability during high-performance cornering.
Inside the cabin, the setup uses curved OLED displays to display real-time performance telemetry, including precise tire temperatures. By combining an advanced 25.9-kWh battery pack with sophisticated aerodynamics, Audi continues to set a new benchmark for electrified performance vehicles.
