Multiple powertrain choices

Smooth, comfortable ride

Modern infotainment system

Underwhelming base engine

Sport trims lack punch

Interior feels plain

The Lexus NX has become a cornerstone of the luxury compact SUV segment, blending comfort, efficiency, and a broad mix of powertrains to suit different buyers. Launched in 2015 as Lexus’ answer to rising demand for upscale crossovers, it continues to refine its mission of delivering everyday luxury in a practical, city-friendly package.

Other luxury compact SUV competitors include the Genesis GV70, BMW X3, and Acura RDX.

What’s New

Lexus characterizes this year’s changes as minor. Revisions for the 2026 NX include:

Basics

A new 450h+ Premium grade, which slots below the Luxury version

All models are now available with F Sport Handling

PHEV variants receive dual-voltage Level 1 and 2 charging cables

The NX250 has been discontinued

Exterior

New Infrared exterior paint

Ultra White paint expands to all models (previously limited to F Sport variants)

What We Think

The Lexus NX competes in a crowded luxury compact SUV field, yet it carves out a niche by emphasizing comfort, efficiency, and everyday ease of use over sporty handling or bold design.

A smooth turbo-four and efficient hybrid and plug-in hybrid options highlight the lineup, complemented by a modern infotainment system and strong safety scores. The ride is plush and refined, making the NX an agreeable daily driver.

That said, the cabin is plain next to rivals, and even the sport trims lack excitement. For buyers prioritizing reliability, efficiency, and comfort, the NX delivers, but those seeking performance or flair will find stronger options elsewhere.

Top-Ranked Competitors:MotorTrend Tested

Lexus drops the somewhat underpowered NX250 from the lineup this year and adds a second NX350h variant with front-wheel drive.

MPGs and Range

With the new NX 350h Hybrid FWD, efficiency improves, delivering up to 42/38 mpg city/highway and a total range of 580 miles. The AWD version isn’t far behind at 41/37 mpg and 566 miles of range.

The NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid also impresses, offering up to 84 mpg-e combined, 37 miles of electric-only driving, and 550 miles of total range. At the low end, the turbo model manages just 21/28 mpg city/highway with a 348-mile range.

Safety Ratings and Features

The NX earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA and was named a 2024 IIHS Top Safety Pick. Every model comes standard with the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 suite of active driver assistance features. This standard package bundles together:

Automatic emergency braking

Parking sensors with automatic braking and rain-sensing wipers are also standard across the lineup.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

Interior space is a weak point for the NX, as rear legroom and cargo capacity lag behind most rivals. On the plus side, hybrid models retain the same cargo space as gas variants, with no underfloor battery penalty.

TechnologyInfotainment

The NX’s standard 9.8-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be upgraded to a 14.0-inch touchscreen. A 7.0-inch driver display and six USB ports are also standard.

Sound System

All NX models come standard with a 10-speaker system, while a 17-speaker Mark Levinson setup is also available.

Available Upgrades

Top models can be equipped with Lexus Advanced Park, the NX’s hands-free self-parking system. The Cold Area package adds a heated steering wheel. Other tech upgrades include a wireless phone charger, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, a digital rearview mirror, and head-up display.

ValueStandard Features

With the old base engine retired, every NX now delivers ample power, and both standard and plug-in hybrids offer impressive efficiency. Driving is smooth and comfortable, and the crossover boasts strong safety credentials.

Recommended Trim

The NX350h Hybrid is our top pick, offering a strong balance of value and fuel efficiency. It’s a good choice for buyers seeking a practical yet upscale compact SUV.
