As temperatures continue to trend upward in Sioux Falls, at least for now, more people across the Sioux Empire are taking their routines outside. Neighborhood sidewalks are filling up, bike traffic along the Sioux Falls Recreation Trail is picking up speed, and local parks from Sertoma to Falls Park are buzzing with activity again.
Along with the fresh air and sunshine comes a growing concern: the surge in e-bike and electric scooter use, especially among younger riders.
According to Dakota News Now, Sioux Falls Police are seeing a noticeable uptick in unsafe riding behaviors. Officers report more cases of riders blowing through stop signs, traveling against traffic, and weaving through busy intersections, something that’s becoming all too common on streets like 41st, Minnesota Avenue, and other high-traffic areas around town.

And it’s not just statistics, it’s happening in real time. I recently watched a young rider zip across one of Sioux Falls’ busiest streets without hesitation. Luckily, drivers were alert. But it easily could have gone the other direction and turned into a serious accident.
Here’s the thing: while e-bikes and scooters may look like harmless fun, Sioux Falls law treats them as motorized vehicles in many situations. That means the same rules of the road apply, stop signs, traffic flow, and general safety laws all must be followed.
Police are urging parents across the Sioux Empire to have conversations with their kids before they hit the streets. And honestly, some adults may need a refresher too. With different classes of e-bikes and varying regulations, it’s not always as straightforward as it seems.

If unsafe riding continues, Sioux Falls Police say citations could become more common. The goal isn’t to hand out tickets, it’s to prevent injuries and keep everyone safe.
So whether you’re cruising the bike trail near Family Park or just heading down the block, remember: ride smart, follow the rules, and stay alert!
