PHEV for short, is a vehicle that, similar to a hybrid, uses two
different power sources to drive the wheels. A petrol engine and
a battery-powered electric motor. The key difference from a regular
hybrid is the battery is much larger and connected to an AC adaptor, so
that it can be plugged in to recharge. Lexus Plug-In Hybrid systems use a two-motor
setup, which is also found in our regular hybrids. The first motor is connected to and
powered by the engine. It generates power to operate the second motor generator and
provides charge to a high voltage battery. The second motor generator provides power to
the wheels, in tandem with the petrol engine. There is another motor generator in the rear, which is responsible for providing
power to the rear wheels. This is all controlled by a Power
Control Unit and Power Split Device, which optimises when to use electric
power and when to use the engine’s power. This provides more efficient use of energy but
can still draw out performance when you need it. You may recharge the vehicle at
home by installing a home charger, plugging into a household outlet, or
charge in public at an AC charging station. Lexus Plug-In Hybrids offer the versatility to
enjoy smooth and quiet electric-only driving for short distances, helping to reduce overall
fuel consumption compared to petrol or diesel vehicles. For longer journeys and road trips,
the vehicle can seamlessly switch to hybrid mode. Lexus plug-in hybrids are equipped
with regenerative braking systems, which reduces power usage as you drive,
