Smart #6 Sedan Spotted Testing: Plug-In Hybrid Powerhouse in China!

The future of the Smart brand is set to be a sleek midsize sedan, the Smart Number Six, which is currently under development and spotted testing in China. This new model marks a significant shift in Smart’s product strategy, moving away from compact SUVs and crossovers to a more traditional sedan design. The number six is set to be powered by a plug-in hybrid system, a departure from the brand’s current electric only offerings. The prototype’s front end features provisional openings for cooling and sensor equipment with a distinctive fascia incorporating rectangular headlights and a central horizontal trim piece. These design elements bear a striking resemblance to recent models from Link and Co. And Zeer, both of which are part of the Jile group. This similarity suggests that the Smart Number six may still be in the early stages of testing with the final production design yet to be unveiled. The vehicle’s exterior also showcases a rounded exterior mirror design and a flowing roof line that transitions into a fastback style rear. The side windows feature a straight, clean belt line consistent with Smart’s established design language. Additional images indicate the possibility of a roof mounted lidar unit, while the rear is expected to include a full width light bar and an active rear spoiler. Under the hood, the Smart Number 6 is anticipated to utilize a plug-in hybrid system similar to the one found in the Smart Number 5 EHD. This setup combines a 1.5 L turbocharged engine rated at 120 kW with an electric motor delivering up to 200 kW. The system employs a 3-speed DHT hybrid specific gearbox and offers two battery options, 20 kW hours and 41.46 kW hours. In the number five EHD, the smaller battery provides a CLTC pure electric range of 120 km, while the larger pack offers a range of 252 km. The combined range extends between 1,483 km and 1,615 km under seal to sea conditions. While Smart has not yet confirmed the specific configuration of the number six, it is expected to follow a similar technical approach. This new sedan is set to be a gamecher for the brand, offering a blend of traditional sedan aesthetics and modern hybrid technology, potentially appealing to a broader audience in the Chinese Forget.
