I NEVER expected Hyundai to Challenge Toyota like this…

Welcome back to the channel. What Hyundai has just revealed is nothing short of extraordinary. They had a CEO investment day and I’m still slogging through this press deck. 2 hours and 40 minute slideshow. We’re going to get through it in a much bridged form today. We’re going to suck up the most important details. If you guys are wondering where I’m at, I am in Northern California to drive the new Corolla Cross as well as some GR products on track. So stay tuned for those uh driving impressions. I wanted to start with what is on the screen first. This is the new Palisad and I will be driving the Palisad Hybrid very shortly. This fall I will be driving it, giving you my impressions. This vehicle starts off something um monumental for Hyundai. It is the first with this new hybrid technology or two motor hybrid technology to debut. All right. And they’re going to copy and paste this two motor hybrid system and six-speed auto that we see in this Palisade and they’re going to put it on different engines and different sizes of vehicles. So, it’s very, very exciting. And you can just see them flexing 19% more horsepower versus the standard ICE model when you hybridize it. 9% more torque. 9%. Keep that in mind. Like it’s going to feel way more torquy because you have instant torque from the electric motors. All right. So 0 to 60 is almost a second faster and you get about 50% better fuel economy. And that’s the sort of upgrades we can expect to see on the new Santa Fe hybrid when it gets this the new uh Tucson hybrid, Sonata and Elantre hybrids. It’s going to be all they’re going to take the fight straight to Toyota. Now like Honda, we we’re we’re past you. We got more we got bigger and exciting things that going to come to the market before before Honda can even get anything out there. So Hyundai also flexed earlier in the press slides about how they are the number three automaker in the world, but they’re the number two most profitable. I don’t know who would be in front of them. My guess would be Toyota is the most profitable. Um Ionic 3 is coming to Europe. This is a Veloster, I guess, reincarnation as a fully electric. It’s It’s really cool looking. It’s super fast. Here’s a quick little video going on in the background of the concept of this new Ionic 3. Think of it as a a an Ionic 5 that’s been turned into a lowslung coupe. It would be amazing, absolutely amazing, if we got this vehicle here in the United States. And that was a part of Hyundai’s focus. They said, “Hey, we’re going to be splitting up how we deliver cars. There’s going to be cars just for Europe like this Ioni 3. You see a car just for India in there. Car EVs just for China as well. All right. While they do have some global EVs, we’re going to keep getting them. But yeah, check out my review on the Ionic 9. Really impressed with that three row EV that I just reviewed a couple weeks ago. For you car enthusiasts out there, this is very, very, very exciting. Okay, seven new in or seven plus. Okay, there’s going to be more than seven new in models by 2030. Watch my review on the Elantre N. Probably the most fun car out there on the market for the money. Uh them expanding their N models. Again, some of those will be like, you know, the i20 and i30 and kind of derivatives or or sisters, brothers to the launcher and then we get stay side. But the the we see them coming in hybrid and ice and in cars and then you also see you’re going to see new uh electric uh flagships. You see the um Ionic 6 and here and then who knows what this is going to be. I know my friends over at Car Confections got to drive the Ionic 6 and over in South Korea. So, they’re going to keep expanding here and it’s going to be exciting. Uh are they going to bring the Kona in back? Well, anything’s possible, but if we look here, I don’t know what this car is. Have no idea. So, you’ll see ICE hybrid and EV and cars. They also have new electric vans coming. I love vans. I’m not going to bore you with it, though. However, remember Hyundai’s teaming up with General Motors to bring you these vans. Okay, so we have a little um have a little timeline here. In 2026 plus, we’re going to have extended range EVs, 600 mi of range, a bigger battery than what we currently have on the plug-in hybrids. Will they retire their current plug-in hybrid technology? I would say more than likely. they’ll probably just scrap it all together for um um extended range EVs. With seeing how successful the E-Revs are in China and how flexible they are, there’s a good chance that the traditional um hybridbased or more traditional hybrid based with a six-speed auto um Pavs are going to be discontinued. All right, we also have a luxury hybrid rear wheel drive. We knew this is coming. Um it’s probably going to debut on the GV90. Um, but it could all we could also see in the GV80, GV or G80, uh, G70 is probably discontinued. And so G90 as well. And I mean, they’re they’re all rear wheel drive. So even the GV70 should see it. NextG EV platform. I mean, the crazy thing is their platform is already nextG compared to Toyota or well Honda’s. We haven’t seen their Zero Series EVs yet, but Honda’s probably going to debut Zero Series with 400 volt architecture. All right. So, not that great there. And they are probably going to be better than General Motors EVs. So, yeah, nextG EV, who knows when it’ll come. And then you also see Fuel Cell, which no one cares about Fuel Cell unless you’re in like Japan or parts of Europe or in South Korea. Hyping up their hybrids. Okay, there’s a stay mode where you can have the car on, run, power run, accessories, that sort of thing. AC incar vehicle to load is going to be more and more widely available in their hybrids, which I’m a huge fan of. Love the idea of a mobile office. Um, and we have new uh EVMC control which is going to be easier done through software um with e axles, okay, electric motors in the back so they can program all-wheel drive a little bit stronger through that um software tuning. Okay, good news for batteries. They think cost is going to go down by 2027, maybe slightly after 30% compared to 2025. Battery costs drop 30% in the next 3 years. That’s going to make a huge difference. Energy density is going to go up 15%. So, your range could go up 15%. And charging time goes down 15%. Still not fast enough. So, we’re we’re we’re making the right target. We’re making the right um progression here. And look at the durability performant. Over 90% battery life retention after 250,000 miles. Yep. Here’s the thing. It’s not really when it comes down to batteries, it’s not necessarily miles or charging cycles as much as it is uh age. The older batteries get the the more they lose their maximum charging capacity. Talking about the playos software to find vehicle software that they’re working on. I’m not going to get into it and bore you guys. Ooh, but Genesis, let’s talk Genesis. That gets me excited. Product vision. Okay. Luxury SUV off the neon concept. This is the GB90. You see on the far left, um, emotional halo. We don’t really have an emotional halo right now. They have the G90 sedan in there, but you would think that they replace that with a huge Grand Coupe. They have so many Grand Coupe concepts. So, um, bespoke models. And then you also see high performance. Yes, Magma is on its way. Here’s their emotional halo. There it is. Okay. I thought it was the G90, but here here’s what they say. the XG Grand Convertible concept. These things are going to be hyper expensive. 150 200k would be my guess. Then you have Magma Halo. So instead of having a convertible version of this car, hard top for better rigidity and then insane amounts of EV torque and horsepower. Previously mentioned just a few days ago, but they’re continuing to emphasize this is that they continue to pour in billions and billions of dollars here in the US. They want to have like 80% of their cars that are sold in the US made in the US by the end of the decade. So, we’re heading to the Korean car blog. They have some more information here that’s taken out of the press deck. All right. So, Hyundai plans to sell 3.3 million electrified vehicles by 2030, representing 60% of its total global sales. Now, here in the United States, Toyota’s already like over 50% electrified. All right? And by 2030, the when the RAV 4 goes fully hybrid, yeah, it’s going to they’re going to be about 60% here in the next couple years. So, Hyundai’s not trailing that far behind Toyota in terms of electrification. Hyundai will roll out more than 18 hybrids by 2030. A lot of those new models, of course, will be seen on the first time ever, Genesis hybrids. This is a big deal. They have to nail this because the current Santa Cruz is not a sales success. They never equipped it with a hybrid and as a result it can never really go toe-to-toe with the better packaged, cheaper, more fuel efficient, more desirable Ford Maverick. Okay, so Hyundai, it’s back to the drawing boards, launching an allnew midsize pickup truck. What does that tell me? Well, they’re going to scrap the Santa Cruz naming because it hasn’t been successful. Okay, now this is body on frame, guys. build out pickup truck portfolio and broaden customer base with potential uh for bodyonframe SUV variant guys. This is like this is Frontier and Extera. This is Tacoma and 4Erunner. They’re going straight for the Japanese on this. This is crazy. All right. Body on before where would they make it? Well, they have this new Meta plant. The Meta Plant in Georgia will build 500,000 vehicles per year. They’re also going to be building, I think, more than a dozen different models at that metal plant between Genesis, Kia, and Hyundai. It has to, if they want this to be successful in the US, obviously, it has to be made here. Otherwise, it’s going to get hit with chicken tax, um, and additional tariffs on top of that. So, there’s just no way that they could build this in Korea and bring it to the United States. Okay, I could be wrong, but a midsize pick. We have something like the Kia Tasman in other markets. We don’t get in the United States, but of course Kia could have their own sister or brother vehicle truck and SUV to Hyundai’s. If not, that would be a huge failure and it just be unfortunate for Kia to be honest if they don’t get in on this um midsize pickup truck, bodyonframe ball game. And it is coming before 2030. 2030. We’re just hoping Toyota also comes in uh with a sub midsize a Maverick a true Maverick fighter, but we don’t know where the heck they would make it. That’s the problem with Toyota. They don’t have production capacity uh to build a small pickup truck unless they cut some Corolla Cross production uh in the the Alabama plant um and bring bring in some curl crosses from Japan or Southeast Asia or something like that. It just, you know, tariff situation makes things really complicated. Okay, this is what Korean Car Blog is expecting from this truck. Hybrid powertrains, I think that’s a given. Now, we see really impressive e-rev uh powertrains on midsize pickup trucks over in China. Things like the BYD Shark, for example, and even they have a a Nissan Frontier E-Rev over there. So, maybe they could actually like have some uniqueness. I would I would love I would absolutely love an E-Rev pickup truck or or an SUV. They can absolutely crush that. Honestly, for the masses though, hybrid is the name of the game or even non-hybrid. But more than likely with a pickup truck, it’s going to be hybrid or e-rev. Could they come up fully electric? Yes. But as we’re seeing right now cool down in the EV market, they’re going to be in no hurry to bring in an E-Rev or sorry, a BEV uh pickup truck. Man, I mean, this really just kind of spells the end for the Santa Cruz. And who knows what they’re going to name this? I mean, for Kia, they can just name it the Tasman. All right, but what the heck? What What is Hyundai going to name this pickup truck? It’s going to be interesting. Hyundai’s not slowing down. They’re on a mission to take the like Hyundai’s on a Hyundai’s on a mission not only in the United States but globally to continue to spread, continue to grow, continue to stay profitable with cutting edge technology, cutting edge electrification, whether it’s nextg EVs, whether it’s -avs, extended range electric vehicles, or on the nextG hybrids. And with their new production facility coming in the United States, it’s going to be guns blazing for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. Genesis continues. Hyundai continues. Kia continues to set all-time sales records month after month so far in 2025. And it is well, we might actually have a little bit of a lull. I’ll say this, time will tell. I hopefully I’m proven wrong. Well, and and Hyundai’s kind of proven that they can come out with fresh product, but a lot of their stuff was saying like 27 2027 plus for some of the more exciting stuff out there, like oh, before 2030 for the new pickup truck. So, you know, we might be waiting quite a ways uh for some of the really exciting stuff, but at least in the near term, we know we have cutting edge hybrids coming um and that’s going to be enough in in the current market. Okay, nextG EV is great. That’s going to be more important for other markets and eventually it’ll slowly over time be more and more important here in the United States. But as of now, they just need to come out with their nextG hybrids and put it on everything. And just like Toyota, there’s going to be printing that money. Wow. I’ll see you in the comments. Let me know if you guys are excited. What are you most excited about? Is it Genesis, their new product lineup, their hybrids, their e-revs, pickup trucks, electric van? Okay. What are you most excited for? I’ll see you guys in the comments. Have a great day. And I got to get to the track.
