Plug-In Hybrids Are Here But Buyers Aren’t Yet Convinced
…Source: https://insideevs.com/news/738054/phevs-not-the-stepping-stone/ Transcript: Per InsideEVs, a new J.D. Power study highlights why plug-in hybrid vehicles are struggling in the U.S. market. Despite offering more range than non-plug-in hybrids, and the ability to drive on electric power alone, PHEVs are not as popular as fully electric or traditional hybrid vehicles.
One key reason is limited electric range, averaging just 25 miles, which leaves many owners dissatisfied compared to Battery EVs. In August, only 1.9% of new car sales were PHEVs, while 9.4% were Battery EVs, and 10.7% were non-plug-in hybrids.
Price is also a major factor. The average cost of a plug-in hybrid compact crossover is around $48,700, significantly higher than $37,700 for a non-plug-in hybrid and $36,900 for a comparable Battery EV.
European buyers are more receptive to PHEVs, with over 7% of new cars registered this year being plug-in hybrids, though regular hybrids still dominate with over 31% market share.
