BMW EV & Hybrids: What to know BEFORE you buy!
My name is Chris today I am going to show you the most important things you should know about every single BMW electric vehicle and hybrid so let’s take a look today we’re going to be uh featuring The 2024 x550e and one of the first things you
Should know about as coming with all of these Hybrid models and electric vehicles is going to be the flexible fast charger which is this right here now the cool thing with the flexible fast charger is that this is the latest charging technology and having this is equivalent of having a BMW wall boox
Just like that right over there so this is included with the car and that is about $600 at your BMW Center so I know which one I would rather have uh definitely uh the one included with the vehicle now with that hybrids received this adapter here and have the option to
Purchase the level two adapter from Parts electric vehicles get all of this together so just to cover that again if you have a hybrid vehicle this is the setup you get right here you have just the level one setup and you can choose to upgrade it to level two if you want
To however if it is a fully electric vehicle you have all of the stuff here right together and how this works is really easy you can see the adapters right on the end there those plug into the very end of the flexible fast charger just like that and of course the
End here this is what plugs into your vehicle so very quick very easy one end goes into the vehicle this connects into the appropriate adapter and then you are good to go so what I’m going to do is I’m going to show you right now how that
Works so if you go over to the charging cable which is right on the side there that’s going to open up you can see that LED indicator uh that is respective of this list right here letting you know a couple of different things first of all if it’s yellow it’s basically
Thinking when it goes to Blue uh that’s how you know it’s charging fully green is fully charged and if it’s red there’s usually some sort of connection issue uh so that’s obviously something you want to reach out to your local service center to see what’s going on but taking
A look at the BMW wall charger so take that off this is the same end as in the flexible fast charger what we’re going to do is head right over to the side of the vehicle we’re going to plug that in and as you can see it always starts with
A white LED light and then in a couple of seconds it’s going to register once the vehicle talks to the wall box then we will have uh some communication going on there but this car actually probably is 100% charged so that’s why not too much is going to be happening there so
Let’s take a look at the inside of the x550e and highlight all the things you guys should know not only about hybrids but electric vehicles especially if it’s a BMW very first thing that we’re going to do is we’re going to take a look at the charging menu so going down into our
Four dots down there there is a charging menu pull this up every single hybrid and electric vehicle has this it’s really really important to make sure this is one of the first places you go to in the car uh second I should probably say after you set up your my
BMW account and all of that the first option you’re going to have here is charging mode charging mode is asking you what it is you want to do do you want to charge immediately when you plug the charger into the car or do you want to charge within a specific uh time the
Reason why you want to do this is if you want to charge during off peak hours when electricity is less expensive some consumers uh choose to do that this is how you can actually achieve that uh going over to departure plan this is pretty convenient this is actually cool
This is integrated into your mybmw app so you can easily access this on the go you don’t have to worry about coming into this menu in the car but what you can see is you have that oneof example that’s what’s highlighted there and you have three other regular intervals
Coming down below it so let’s say Monday Wednesday and Friday you your schedule is different than Tuesday and Thursday then Saturday is a completely different day uh in terms of your schedule so you can set up these uh customized schedules based off of of however busy or slow
Your week is and you can make sure that your hybrid or electric vehicle is going to be sufficiently charged whenever it is you need to go which I think is really really cool let’s go over to the AC limit so the AC limit because we are
In a hybrid here is going to be 32 amps and as you can see right there that is all the way up the AC limit if that’s checked off at the very top it shows it’s going to it’s going to basically limit what’s going on so let’s say I
Slide this back to 13 and then uncheck that so you can see in this case it’s going to be locked at 13 amps which is not going to do do us too much uh with this high voltage battery and it certainly won’t do us any favors for a
Fully electric vehicle but as we can turn this up this is how we can unlock that to get the full potential um unless you know that there is a reason why you need to limit the amperage it’s always recommended to turn that up all the way a lot of times what
Happens is when The Cars first come in it’s set on six amps like this and that is an issue because it takes forever to charge so going back to the flexible fast charger that we had in the tailgate area just keep in mind especially you
Know we’re in an x550e so we’re going to use that as an example if we use the included adapter that is the level one to plug into our regular wall outlet that is going to take about 21 1 12 hours in order to charge the X5 from0 to
100% that’s a long time guys okay that is a long time um it is nice that we’re getting about 40 to 45 electric miles in this vehicle that is really designed to supplement the you know to create that high higher number for the mpge but 21 1/2 hours is forever the
Benefit of upgrading to that level two adapter that I showed you back there as well from your parts department is it’s going to cut down your 21 1/2 hour charge time down to about 7 hours so that it most people I would say probably guesss what maybe 6 to 8 hours of sleep
At night they go home they they rest they do what they need to do then they go and start their day all over again well the important thing there is once you get home all you need to do is plug your car into your level two setup and
You’re all set you know in 7even hours you will be fully charged from zero to 100% okay so that is really important and as you can appreciate every single electric vehicle every single whether it’s a hybrid or it’s a fully electric vehicle is going to have a different
Charge time because the high voltage battery has a different capacity so if you have any any questions about if you’re doing research or you already have one of these electrified Vehicles definitely take a look at bmwusa.com or reach out to your local client adviser or BMW Genius and they can tell you the
Specifics on exactly what’s going on with your car and what is the range in the charge times you can expect but in here for the AC limit that definitely should be 32 amps so let’s go back to where we were charging Target so here is our charging Target we’re not this
Doesn’t really open to anything but we can move our finger up and down here you can see the charging Target is 100% that’s pretty straightforward that’s exactly what you think it means that wants to know what percent of the battery do you want to have charged do
You want to charge it up to 85% 90% 100% where it is you would like to go the recommendation for BMW is to charge up to 100% uh that is normally we want to make sure our customers are maximizing their electric range and especially when
The car is new as you can see I’m going to come right over here you can see right down there that it shows that we are at 100% And we have about 39 miles now if you remember just a couple of minutes ago I mentioned that we have
About 40 to 45 electric miles so why is it that it’s 39 right here could be many of the factors and we’ll get into that in a couple of minutes uh the outside temperature is one of them but you do have to condition the car to a certain extent
And one of the things is as as we have as we’re driving the car and the car has more data that range is going to increase over time so you want to make sure we’re doing all of the right things at the right time and making sure that
Your charg charging Target is up to 100% that is definitely very very important marketing standpoint when you look at DC fast charging um that is you know the the much higher rate of charging uh that’s something that electric vehicles are you know you definitely kind of need
That we talked about level one level two that’s kind of in the hybrid space but once we get into fully electric vehicles the batteries and the capacity is so large we really need to step up to that third level and that’s DC fast charging at this point in time BMW hybrids do not
Support DC fast charging uh they certainly could in the future but all of BMW’s fully electric vehicles do support DC fast charging so if you look at all the charging Technologies you have level one which is your regular wall outlet stepping up is going to be level two
That’s your 220 240 volt then above that is a commercial charging this is where you go at you maybe a rest area or a mall or a school or a public place some car dealerships also have this this is the highest level of charge that you can
Get out there this is not available in a residential capacity unless you’re living in a a complex and uh you do they you know have that permit and able to you know run that power over to it it’s um it’s lot of lot of uh energy uh going
Into that so it is important to understand that to to maximize that in marketing they talk about charging from you know 0 to 80% because that is going to be the fastest charge when you are doing DC fast charging that is going to get you to that number and get you to a
Really sufficient range in the shortest amount of time um actually finishing that last you know x per of your charge after 80% is going to take much much longer than it took to go from0 to 80% that’s just kind of the science behind uh why it you how charging works and how
That all goes so let’s keep going uh we do have the unlock charging cable uh that is it’s relevant for all electrified vehicles but the reason why they have an unlocked charging cable think of an electric vehicle doing that d D fast charging um a lot of energy
Coming into high kilowatts coming into the vehicle if you were to just remove that cable there could be uh some sort of an electrical Arc that could come from the charging um someone could get very hurt by that and we definitely want to make sure that’s not the case so if
You need to end charging early it is always recommended to come inside of your vehicle tap where it says unlock charging cable as you can see right there and then you know you can safely remove the charging cable and then you’re good to uh go on your way and the
Very last thing there is location based charging settings as you can see there if you go to certain charging stations and you know you have uh you know a preset settings that you like to maintain you can easily just uh kind of basically drop a Geo pin and the vehicle
Understands oh okay every time I’m at this charging station I’m going to adopt you know settings X Y and Z which I think is pretty convenient so that’s some pretty good stuff there so keep that in mind every single BMW electric vehicle in hybrid has this menu and it
Is important to understand how this works other things I want to show you specific to these vehicles is we do have a couple of different options um down here specific to these electrified vehicles and the first thing we’re going to take a look at is that battery that’s
Right there so this battery When We Touch This what that’s going to do is it’s called battery hold and the battery charge is going to be maintained at the current level while you’re driving and let’s talk about why you’d want to do that so sometimes you know when you’re
Going through let’s say an urban area cities usually can be pretty inefficient with the stopandgo traffic they easily can chew up your electric range and if you’re unfamiliar with where you are you just want to kind of get through that urban area and you don’t want to have to
Worry too much about you know your charg Charing and stopping and all of that this is a great way of holding your battery and not worrying about it again this is specific to hybrids because in this case it does use your engine in order to accommodate that electric
Vehicles don’t have that luxury as you can imagine but that is a very cool button right there when you touch it it’s going to light up orange that’s how we know we’re going to maintain 100% of our battery we’re going to offset and use the engine but it is
Going to maintain that battery for uh you know minor cases just in case we need to get through an area that we are um maybe not quite sure of and we just need to get through that coming down now keep in mind every vehicle is a little
Bit different some of our vehicles that have been updated they do have different looking controls they uh maybe called something different especially in in some of our EVS but the basic idea is especially when we’re looking at hybrids is we’re going to start in the hybrid
Mode in the hybrid mode is going to have a balanced hybrid drive it is going to figure out if it’s going to use the engine or if it’s going to use the battery then we can go down to electric and you can see all of these different options for electric electric is exactly
What it sounds like it’s just using the battery it’s not using anything else but starting at at the very first tile is something very interesting and it’s the first time we’ve actually offered this in our vehicles except for you know full m cars if you check off electric
Individual as default what that means is every time you turn the car on it will start in the electric mode which is really really convenient um if that is something that you are looking to do especially if you are just staying uh locally Just Around Town you know you’re
Not going too far and uh your you know 40 to 45 mile range is more than sufficient a lot of people are really loving the option that they don’t have to go through all these controls and these buttons butons every single time they get in their car so that is very
Cool and that’s very convenient but all the rest of this Eco proo seat heating ecopro climate control ecopro sight this is activating the ability to pull back or give full release to all these options and what I mean by that is let’s say the um seat heating if you want to dial back
The level of intensity for the heated seat to be more efficient you can check that off as it is now and it won’t be as warm if you want to pull back the climate control you can do that as well if you want to pull back the lighting
Elements you can do that as well you can go really to the nth degree in this car and say hey look I want to be as efficient as possible and when I’m in the electric individual mode I want to make sure that you’re pulling everything back you can possibly pull back to be
The most efficient possible which I think is really really cool and uh at the end these are just sort of um you know driving settings uh you know you have your suspension there and you have your steering so let’s say you want to be in the electric mode but you want to
Feel little spier you can go right into the sport same thing with your suspension you can go right into sport if you want to as well so I think that’s really really cool um and when you’re in actually the sport mode you are using the engine and you know a lot of this
Does vary based off of your vehicle so if you have any questions definitely reach out to your local BMW Center uh for more specific information as what’s going on let’s talk about some other things uh because we’re in a hybrid and we’re in an SUV you have the air suspension right here
So what we have is a toggle switch and we can move this up we can move this down uh this does auto level depending on the driving mode that you’re in and the best example to give you to give with this is let’s say you are merging
On the highway and you’re beginning to accelerate so what you could can do is you can press Sport and you will notice that it’s going to lower itself to have a lower center of gravity for better driving Dynamics which I think is really clever but also just like an X7 you can
Treat this as you’d like so if you want to push up just like this you can see that light flashing um that second light right above that is letting us know that it’s going to be now raising up to that level and we can keep doing this if you
Want as you keep going up it’s going to keep going up and it’s going to give you a little message right on the center display as to what’s going on which I think is really cool and when you lock the card and it goes to sleep it’s going
To lower itself it’s going to do all of this intelligently so you don’t have to worry about all these different elements but again depending on the driving modes that you’re doing over here it does talk to the uh suspension the air suspension here so it knows what it should be doing
What level of the car it should be and always to make sure you are the most comfortable which I think is really convenient let’s talk about another aspect of our hybrid in our electric vehicles taking a look at the map there one of the things that we
See if we look in here is we have the charging stations all over the place on the map here as we take a look and we touch some of these points like if we touch this one right here it’s going to bring up different information and if we
See show list there’s probably going to be more than one charging station and uh there is as you can see right there so the reason why I bring this up is because a lot of times people ask questions such as well you know I like
Apple carplay I want to use ways I want to use Google Maps I want to use all this other stuff and that’s great but the thing that’s really important to understand is that you do have the charging stations built into the BMW navigation and keep in mind all the
Stuff is connected to the my BMW app so if you go into the map section in the my BMW app you can search destination and places you want to go on the way to the car send it to the car by the time you get in here it’s already there you don’t
Have to sit there even though the intelligent personal assistant right here is so intuitive one quick press on the U microphone right there or just by simply saying hey BMW or my BMW whatever wake word you’d like to use it intelligently pops up and you just say
Take me to Target take me to Whole Foods take me to wherever it is you want to go that’s where you’re going to go so keep in mind that the onboard functions here are really really smart and they’re designed to make your life easier not harder but the other thing that’s really
Important to understand especially with those uh charging stations built into the BMW navigation system is the more data that you give the car the more intuitive and the more intelligent the car is going to be over time so remember back when we started talking about how
At 100% charge we’re about at you know 39 mil but I said it should be about 40 4 to 45 well it’s going to get to 40 to 45 especially 45 or even greater if you start using all the capabilities of the car when you start using navigation in
Your hybrid or electric vehicle what’s going to happen is you’re giving more data to the car the car is taking that and saying okay where do they want to go how much traffic is there what is the outside temperature there’s all these little uh data points that gets pulled
Together and and before you before you even realize it there there’s a lot of information that the car now has like saying oh well it’s 28 degrees outside and there’s a lot of traffic that sounds pretty inefficient and it understands that it is going to pull back on your
Range sooner rather than later so okay we’re going through a major urban area there’s a lot of traffic and it’s really cold outside that’s not really good uh to be the most efficient however on the other side of things maybe it is not really cold outside maybe it’s uh you
Know the optimal temperature for a battery you know going up into the 70s 80s 90s something like that maybe it’s a little bit warmer outside there’s no traffic and we’re not going through an urban area uh that would be uh really really preferred uh and you’re going to
Have that reflect inside of your range you’re going to notice your range is going to exponentially increase over time the longer you keep giving that data to the car and the car understands that but that is completely up to you A lot of times customers have their preferred operating system a navigation
System that they like to use and that’s perfectly fine but it is important to understand in order for the car to understand what it needs to do and give the best information uh to you it really needs that from you so consider using the BMW navigation system because that
Is is really really intuitive and it pulls all that stuff together these these cars are like you know they’re they’re laptops on Wheels they’re computers so the more information they get it can turn around and help you even better with that and even the a prediction with the roots you know if
You’re navigating some there somewhere especially an electric car and you’re going to run out of um of range um it’s going to say okay you know you’re going to stop X Y and Z on the way to your trip to this destination it just does that intuitive
If it doesn’t feel like you can make it it’s going to reroot you until you can make it so it’s going to make sure that you stop and you’re never stuck and you’re going to charge and everything is going to be good to go along the way
That is the benefit of using the navigation system built into the vehicle because it’s not using any other third- party application and it understands exactly what it needs to do at the right time which is really really cool one of the last things I want to highlight in a
Hybrid especially is if we come down here you can see a little button down there and that button is a gas button and that is because you know since we’re in a hybrid you know we do have an engine and so when we do fill up the fuel tank it’s important to understand
That that fuel tank is pressurized uh because we also have the high voltage battery that’s close to it in order to make sure that you know we’re doing everything as safe as possible we do need to push that button in order to uh de pressurize the fuel tank and then it
Is safe to open that cover a lot of our internal combustion engines we just tap the cover it pops right open you may have realized inside of a hybrid that’s not quite the case because that cover is actually locked until the tank is depressurized so keep that in mind so
