gm energy – Pilot / Flying J Update #57 (Electric Vehicle Charging)

There’s been a good bit of activity in the Pilot Flying J project, enough so I felt one of these updates was warranted. Let’s go ahead and get into what’s new. As a reminder, we transitioned to Google Maps in order to track this project. Let’s go ahead and pull that up now. And if you’ll notice right here, there’s a black one. That’s the El Paso that burnt to the ground. I changed it to be black cuz it’s not under construction. It’s not open to something else. And they’re probably going to be that way for another year, I’d say, while they finish building the facility, getting their insurance straightened away and whatnot. One thing to call out uh with this map from last time, there’s a lot more red pips, and we were kind of running out of locations spotted under construction, but that’s no longer the case. We have a pretty good backfilling of locations that have now been spotted under construction. I was really encouraged to see that. One of the reasons why I went ahead and did this update is because there was a lot starting to stack up of new locations spotted under construction. Going over some of the larger form factors, Elton Maryland is now open funded by Nebby right off the interstate at a facility that is open 24/7 365. What’s not to like? They even have buckets with window squeegees and garbage cans to empty the trash out of the back of the car as well. Very nice looking station. Tons of capacity right off Interstate 95. Plus, who wants to drive on Interstate 95 anyway? I’d rather be camped out underneath the canopy. And this dog looks to be really enjoying themselves here underneath the canopy instead of being stuck in traffic on 95. Some friends in the larger form factor arena, Wildwood, Florida, open. And this location, East St. Louis, is open, but there’s not an updated picture yet. So the still the construction Yuma Arizona also open Loi California you can see six stalls there. Cocoa Florida six stalls similarly all these got nice looking canopies to them except for Yuma. And then this one Pontoon Beach Illinois big pullth through canopy with six dispensers. I’m sorry. Three dispensers, six stalls. And this one sitting right in the middle of the canopy. I mean, you could charge your car with with two charging cables, assuming you have two charging ports, and go twice as fast, I guess. But you can see the Denny’s is not closed. This is actually open. And all this white stuff here is called snow. I had to look it up in an encyclopedia. I didn’t know exactly what that stuff was, but Pontoon Beach, Illinois, now open. And a demonstration in creativity in station design by Pilot Flying J. really nice looking. This is what the map looks like on Plug Share. You can see there’s a ton of density east of the Mississippi. A couple of corridors to call out. It is Interstate 10. You can see like a machine gun rattling down a um target. And Interstate 40 right here um was a early focus of theirs. and Interstate 5, Interstate 95. All these ones look to be getting a good deal of activity up here in the northern Rockies is also been a concentration of theirs, which is nice to see because this often fly over country for other CPOS. Progress over time very steady, unabated on the trajectory. So, uh, we’re headed towards 2027 where we should be at 500 if my reckoning is correct towards the end of 2027. We are getting close to the magic number of 250 which will be the midpoint of the goal of 500. And I did reach out to um, Pilot Corp to see if they would engage me on some kind of special engagement in order to celebrate the midpoint of the project. And I did not hear back. And it’s not uncommon I found when you’re interfacing with large sea stores for them to not respond because I think it’s just a nature of the business that because there’s a lot of customers flowing through their properties. I’m thinking they get overwhelmed with the amount of people that are um engaging them one way or the other. And so I think their PR people tend to get overwhelmed with requests. So I have not heard back. I’m guessing likely there won’t be any uh feedback from them. them. And if that’s the case, it is what it is. I’ll try to do something special in order to mark the 250 mark. Some of the viewers have requested that I do so, and by all means, I will. And likely that will be the next update uh because we’re getting close to that midpoint number. Now, let’s get into new this update locations that have opened. I mentioned East St. Louis. That’s in this tight cluster of pips right near St. Louis on the Illinois side. And similarly, Pontoon Beach is in this same cluster of pips. You can see that is just a very dense area with a lot of stations right there near St. Louis. Gulfport, Mississippi down here is now open. Gerard, Ohio near Youngstown now open. Yuma, Arizona on Interstate 8 over here. and uh Wells Nevada in the norththeast portion of Nevada in the upper uh Rockies as I was mentioning this area of the upper Rockies that they seem to be targeting also now open. Now the back filling of the spotted under construction. You can see there’s more of these than there were that were open. So that was kind of uh refreshing to me. This one in Central Point, Oregon is on Interstate 5. I don’t know why this red arrow is here. I should have deleted that. It’s pointing up to nowhere. Apologize for the clerical error. This is the one in Willard, Utah. And if you look right underneath it is a green pip. So, for some reason, they’re concentrating. There’s the Wells, Nevada one that opened. And um another one that is getting put in right near um I forgot the name of the Utah location. Uh that is the Green Pip here. But regardless, you can see for some reason they like the upper rocky region of the country. Knoxville, Tennessee, which is their home turf. That’s where headquarters for Pilot Flying J is. They already had one station open, which was one of the first eight that open initially on Watts Road. This is an additional one in Knoxville, Tennessee, that is spotted under construction. Hagerstown, Maryland up here, spotted under construction. Jacksonville, Florida. There’s actually another one in Jacksonville, Florida, but it’s open. This is one that is spotted under construction and Dixon, Tennessee. So, in Tennessee, there’s a bit of a story to tell because that is the home turf of Pilot Corp uh in Knoxville. Um they won a lot of Nebi awards, but the state of Tennessee has been very slow in doing anything with their Nevi program. So, it kind of is leaving Pilot high and dry with multiple builds. But these two stations are non-nevi builds. And you can see there’s other pips in the state of Tennessee that they went ahead and completed. But all the locations, I think there’s five, maybe six in the state of Tennessee that are Nevi awards that are just kind of stuck waiting for the red tape to clear. So that’s unfortunate. But Dixon, Tennessee on Interstate 40 now spotted under construction. Oakrove, Kentucky up here kind of on the way to Cincinnati spotted under construction. in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Spotted under construction. Going to drop my video. This is what it looks like in table form. Pausing here for a second. Couple of things to call out. I did add the number of canopies because Pilot Flying J, in my opinion, that’s where the CPO really shines is the ability to build stations with beautiful canopies. Not only that, obviously right off the interstate with amenities to open 24/7, 365, but we have 113 out of 242 uh open stations that have canopies. So basically half, you know, more or less half of the stations have canopies, half of them don’t, which uh seemed to be the pattern we were following throughout the entirety of this project and likely going to continue in that vein. Texas is 10 above Ohio, but Illinois, which was a late bloomer, is now in third place kind of solidly above the state of Florida, which is really saying something. And the state of California now has eight stations either open or spotted under construction. Alabama is embarrassingly on top of California. Who would have thought? Deep South has got more Pilot Flying J uh electrical uh vehicle charging stations than the state of California, but there it is. But that’s obviously going to flip here soon. I think California is going to get their act together here pretty quick. Interstate 40’s got 21 holding its own. Uh but some of these other ones are starting to creep up. Specifically, Interstate 70 is really starting to creep up. I’m seeing an 80 and where is 10? Uh 10 has got 14. So 10 is starting to fill in also. They filled in all the way from Jacksonville to San Antonio, Texas, but there’s still a good stretch of Interstate 10 that could be completed um west of there. So keep your eye on 10. Although it’s uh 10 uh or I’m sorry uh seven down from the lead. I think this is one to keep your eye on. Interstate 5 also is doing very respectively with nine. And that also can buoy up pretty quick. Central time zone is in triple digits with 107 open, seven spotted under construction. Eastern time zone is 95 open, six spotted under construction. The mountain time zone is 30 open, two spotted under construction. Pacific has 10 open, six spotted under construction. I’m going to go ahead and roll the slide deck that has all the canopy locations starting with the ones that are under construction and then all the ones that are open. Thank you very much for watching.
