BYD Reveal Cheap Kei Car – The Brands Cheapest EV EVER
In Singapore, BYD have already taken over from Toyota. Toyota have historically been the bestselling car manufacturer in Singapore. Now, BYD is way ahead in the sales charts in Singapore. And a similar thing could eventually happen in Toyota’s homeland of Japan. Body has been carefully studying the market in Japan, working out what cars customers are buying and working out how it can take market share from Japanese consumers in their own country. This is B’s little new key car. This is their idea for taking over the Japanese automotive industry. And honestly, the truth is most people in Japan buy these cars. They buy these small cars. So be went and said, “Well, what are we going to do?” Okay, let’s just undercut everyone in Japan. Make a better small electric key car than them. This is what it is, and this is the price. Hello, my friends. Welcome to the channel. I’m Sam Evans. You’re watching the Electric Viking. And YouTube’s new algorithm means that you’re often not getting all of our videos in your feed. There’s 7,500. I’m pretty sure you’re probably not seeing a lot of them. In the description, there is a link to our newsletter. Click on that and you can get an update every day of all the latest news in the electric car industry. BYOD they are exceptionally aggressive and they are willing to basically enter any market and do whatever it takes to take market share. They were already taking market share in Japan but not really at the rate that they expected to be. I mean, the truth is Tesla is actually out selling BYD in Japan, which is bizarre, but um that’s probably about to change. In fact, almost certainly about to change. Now, this car isn’t just for Japan, by the way. It’s going to be sold in other markets as well, but it’s primarily, really, the truth is BYD just developed this car primarily for the Japanese car market. Now, it’s going to officially debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, which is on the 29th of October. However, we know that this K car will be called the BOD RCOo. Rao Racco. Yeah, interesting. Anyhow, it’s going to be it’s going to have a four-door layout with rear sliding doors with their rails positioned above the rear wheel arches and the rear side windows feature privacy glass. Um, yeah. I mean, all you know, the stuff that, to be honest, most most cars get these days. Now, what does it get that is interesting? First of all, overall length is 3.4 m long. That’s the size of a K car in Japan. If they’re um different, bigger than that, they don’t qualify for certain purchase incentives and parking incentives and all kinds of incentives. So, they’re quite small, 3.4 4 m long, but obviously because they’re a box, they are more practical than what you’d think. Width though is also quite narrow. They’re 1,480 mm wide. It’s about 1.5 m wide. Height is actually relatively high, 2 m high, 2,000 mm. Meaning, yeah, these things literally are a box. For the electric drivetrain, there’s a 20 kWh battery pack. Estimated range is 180 km. That’s WLTC. So WLTP range probably 150 km really probably about 90 maybe 80 or 90 miles of EPA range. Doesn’t sound like much but for most people in Japan it’s enough. It also has a heat pump which helps with efficiency and obviously improving the car’s overall effectiveness in using its battery. Plus, it’s got 100 kW DC fast charging, which sounds relatively slow for today’s day and age. But for a 20 kowatth battery, it’s going to be enough. You’re going to charge that battery pretty quickly with 100 kow charging. How much is it going to cost? Well, it’s not cheap. It’s expected to cost around $17,000, meaning it’ll be at a similar price to the Honda NBOX, the Suzuki Spacia, and the current bestselling car in Japan, which is called the Nissan Sakura. The Secura starts at about that price as well, around 16,700, and it also has a 20 kWh battery with a similar driving range. Now, these prices, BYOD might come into the market at around the price of the Nissan Sakura, but you can guarantee that it won’t be that price for very long. Body will undercut everyone for as long as it takes to get market share, and probably for as long as it takes for people to start buying this EV and realize it’s actually pretty good. tell their friends, hey, you know what? You don’t have to buy a Japanese car. This is actually maybe a bit better for the price. And ultimately, Body will eventually take massive market share in Japan. It’s inevitable. They’re pretty good at it. They’re good at disrupting markets, figuring out what a car market wants, and at being very, very effective in giving customers what they want at the prices they want to pay. So, this car is going to be pretty successful, I’d say, in taking over and disrupting the Japanese car market. To give you an idea on market share, right, nearly 40% of all cars sold in 2024 were key cars or K cars, whatever you call them, they have a massive market share in Japan. Guys, I’m with Powershop for my EV charging electricity plan. you can get a $100 credit on your electricity bill. Plus, if you sign up with my referral link in the description below, you’ll get an additional that’s $175 of credit to sign up to Power Shop. I use the EV day saver plan. And the reason is because for those 2 hours from 12 till 2:00 p.m. in the day, you get electricity completely free. So, yeah, 2 hours a day, it’s probably going to cover your electricity bills for your EV every day. Basically, you can charge your EV for free on this plan. I’ll put a link in the description below. Now, some reports say it’s going to cost $13,000. Some say 17. I’m going to guess it’s more like $13,000. This is not the price in China. If I mean, if they priced it at $13,000 in China, they’d probably sell three in a car market of 32 mill 32 million cars a year. If they do go ahead and sell this in China, which they probably will, the price would be closer to, I’d say, around $6 or $7,000, it will be underneath the price of the Body Seagull because this is a significantly smaller car than the Seagull. And it has obviously a much smaller battery as well. So guys, what do you think of these cars that people drive in Japan? Do you think these cars would work outside of Japan, like in the US or Australia or Europe? I do. I really do. I think as long as they can do the speed limit, you know, as long as they can do 110 or 100 km an hour, then I don’t see why they shouldn’t be a good option as a second car. I don’t I don’t know why we need as particularly as a second car or as a car for say a first car or for someone living in a really dense city. I think these this would be a really practical and good option. I can see why the Japanese have adopted them. They just make sense. And I mean also you’re not wasting money on a vehicle with a massive battery that you’re never actually going to use or in fact not maybe not never but you know 99% of the time you’re not going to actually need. So I think these are great particularly as a second car and I mean I I’d say BOD hopefully they can sell them in other markets. They’re probably not going to because I’m going to guess that they’re going to look at the market and say, “Well, no, no one’s buying key cars in that country, so we won’t bother with that.” But, um, you know, they should. I think this would be a good option. It would be help. It would be really good at actually reducing the amount of materials, batteries, etc. that go into every car that is sold. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks for watching. [Music]
