EV sales in the UK destroying ICE brands – Toyota and Nissan in last place
One of the fastest growing electric car markets in the world. When I say one of the fastest, I mean one of the top three globally is actually the UK. EV sales in the UK have skyrocketed this year. Here are the numbers behind this stratospheric rise. Hello my friends. Welcome to the channel. Great to have you with us. I’m Sam Evans. UK electric car sales are up by 35% in the first six months of the year and they had their strongest June for overall car sales in 2019. In other words, the car market’s going up. The amount of cars being sold, but the amount of EVs being sold is going up much, much faster. British electric car sales rose by 35% in the first half of 2025 after the strongest June for overall car sales since before the COVID pandemic. The number of EVs sold rose by 35% to 225,000 in the first 6 months of the year, which is an incredible number. In the month of June, around a quarter, around 25% of all cars sold were fully electric. Tesla in particular, they’re having a good time there because in the rest of Europe, Tesla are suffering. Well, not in Norway or Spain, but the rest of Europe, they are definitely, especially in Germany, but in the UK, people are saying, you know what, who cares about Musk? And they’re buying a lot of Teslas. In fact, Tesla UK sales increased by 14% year-over-year. And that meant that actually Tesla sold 7,720 EVs in the UK in just the month of June alone. However, Tesla’s rivals such as Bo increased their sales by much more than that. Even though we’re coming from a much lower base, B sold 2,500 vehicles. It sales increased by 400%. Yeah. I mean, wow. What that means is actually EVs, their sales increase in June in the UK was 40%. 40% growth, right? That is absolutely wild. And in fact, it’s really interesting because people in the UK are much more likely to buy a Chinese EV than people in, for example, Germany. Intriguingly, so far this year, apparently Ford have achieved the fastest growth in UK electric car sales. So, a lot of Ford there’s a lot of Ford fans in the UK still. It’s a big big brand there. And I think now that Ford finally have some decent EVs, people are are really happy to buy them. Obviously, British car factories have had to contend with a major slowdown in response to extra US tariffs of 25% announced by Donald Trump in March. So, British car factories are struggling. That means that even though car sales in the UK are at an all-time high, UK car production last month fell to its lowest level for well since 1949. That’s 76 years. Factories in the UK received restbite on Monday when a lower tariff rate of 10% from the US kicked in after a limited and who knows what’s going to happen Donald Trump trade deal was agreed between the UK and the US. The 10% rate will apply for the first 100,000 vehicles exported to the US. After that though, everything’s off the table. So, what are the numbers so far for the year? Well, so far in 2025, electric car sales have made up 22% of all cars sold. That’s not plug-in hybrids, by the way, guys. That’s just fully electric cars. That’s below the 28% target, though. And really, let’s be realistic. There is a good chance we could get to that target of 28% by the end of the year because of the fact that, like I said before, EV sales growing by, it’s actually 39.6% in the month of June. If that continues to happen, they’ll probably hit 28% or maybe even 30% by the end of the year. We’re already at 25% in the UK. 28% is not that far away. So, this actually means that car makers are on track in the UK to meet the electric car sales targets. Um, and and that means most car manufacturers won’t have to pay huge fines in the UK, but there will be some that will, right? Who is doing the worst? Niss. Nissen’s doing the worst in the UK. In fact, new automotive analysis suggests the Japanese car Nissen is the farthest away from what it needs to achieve in 2025 in order not to pay hundreds of millions of fine in in fines. In second worst position is Toyota. In third is Jaguar Land Rover. So, two Japanese brands are the worst when it comes to EB sales in the UK in terms of percentage of car sales sold. In terms of just purely petrol and diesel cars, they only have a 51% market share in the UK right now. 51%. And as you can see, that is dwindling very, very, very fast. So, what are the bestselling electric cars in the UK this year? Well, shockingly to me, the Kia EV3 is in first place. That’s followed by the Tesla Model Y. But actually based on sales for the Tesla Model Y in the month of June, the Model Y has overtaken the K EV3. Anyway, close battle between those two cars. In third is the Tesla Model 3. Fourth is the MG4. Fifth is the BMW i4 followed by the Hyundai Ionic 5 and the Ford Puma Gene E. However, sales of BD vehicles and Xpang vehicles, EVs I should say, in the UK have begun to significantly rise. And as you can see, BD sales have grown enormously as well. So, how’s the UK car market going to look like in 10 years? Well, for one, we’re already at right 25% electric cars in the UK. I think we’ll hit about 80% by 2030. By 2035, there won’t be any petrol powered cars sold. Diesel cars, they’ll be dead. They’ll be extinct. If you own one of them, resale value will be peanuts. So, it’s worth keeping that in mind. If you’re going to buy a car today and you’re planning on selling it in 5 10 years time, it’s worth keeping in mind whether or not if that’s a luxury car, if that’s an expensive car, it’s not going to be worth anything if it’s internal combustion. Global EV sales surged in May 2026, hitting 1.6 million units sold, according to the latest data from EV research house motion. That means the total this year so far is 7.2 million, a 28% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Funny isn’t it how we’re not we’re hearing a lot less of this ridiculous media narrative that EV sales have gone down and that that electric cars are slowing sales are way below expectations slowing cuz it’s all complete nonsense and really more and more of most countries around the world more and more of their sales of cars have been EVs drastically more the big winner is China But remember, there’s actually other countries, many countries around the world growing even faster than China are. If you exclude China, Europe, and the United States from the numbers, the rest of the world’s EV sales have grown even faster than these numbers. But China did well, they’ve done pretty damn well. In fact, they sold a record-breaking 1 million EVs in May alone. That’s a 33% jump year-over-year and a 10% increase just compared to the previous month. [Music]
