More than 40 people have been arrested and 74 illegal e-bikes seized in a week-long crackdown on crime and anti-social behaviour in north-west London, the Metropolitan Police said.

The operation also targeted the sale of illegal goods and saw more than 1,100 suspected stolen mobile phones seized from a store on Kilburn High Road – more than twice the number initially thought.

Two 20-inch (50 cm) machetes were found at a nearby barber shop, as well as a van connected with drug-dealing that contained £3,000 worth of nitrous oxide canisters – also known as laughing gas.

The Met said it took “robust action” in deploying extra patrols following concerns about crime in the area.

In total, 45 arrests were made for offences including possession with intent to supply class A drugs, possession of offensive weapons, and shoplifting.

Insp Yu Zhang, who led the operation, said: “This crackdown has seen drugs, weapons and dangerous illegal e-bikes taken off the streets.

“We know these offences are ones that our communities care about, and they want to see officers taking robust action.”

“We have done exactly that, this week-long operation will disrupt the criminal networks in Kilburn, ensuring the area is undoubtedly safer for the community.”
