MARION, Iowa (KCRG) – The Marion city council passed new speed limits for cyclists in the city as electric bikes and scooters become more popular.

The limit for riding on sidewalks is 10 mph and on trails it is 20 mph.

People walking the trails in Marion said they see e-bikes all the time, but many of the people who use them drive them too fast.

Bob Brooker, a bicyclist, said 20 mph is a good limit for the trails, but he has concerns about enforcement.

“I think that’s a good rule, but I would really be curious who’s actually going to police that and who’s going to, you know, enforce that when you do see bikes going by at a very fast clip and unsafe,” Brooker said.

The new speed limits apply to any standard bicycle, e-bike or scooter. Any bike that is gas powered or over 750 watts is considered a motorized vehicle and is not allowed on any trails or sidewalks.

The city said the ordinance will help improve safety and address motor bikes on trails that are not allowed.
