Living with the Porsche Macan Turbo – No Hassle EV Ownership IS POSSIBLE !
Hey guys and welcome to Petroped and welcome to Porsche Reading which is also the headquarters of Porsche GB. Now I’m here to pick up this that’s the new Porsche Macan Turbo in the most fantastic speed yellow. Now, I’ve got that car for the next week. And in this video, I want to do something a little bit different to the normal format of my videos. For sure, we’re going to renew it. I’ve only driven the base Macan 4. I did drive a Macan Turbo up the hill at Goodwood two years ago, but that wasn’t really a great test cuz I think the hill at Goodwood’s less than 2 miles long. But I’ve got quite a few things on. I’m actually right now going from here in Reading. I’m going to drive up to Donington Park and stay in Melbourne, just near Donington Park, because tomorrow I’ve got a Porsche track day, which should be amazing. And I’m going to be driving the Porsche 911 at that track day. And I thought I’d take you a little bit behind the scenes on that. And then I need to drive home. And then at the weekend, I’ve got to go to the Cotswwells for an event with Alpine and drive home. So I’ve got lots and lots of miles. And I’m going to see how I get on with the fact that that’s an EV. I think it will be a really good test because we’ll be able to check out its range. It supposedly does about 330 mi of range WLTP. So, we’ll take a little bit off of that. Let’s say I’ll be really happy if I get 200 miles, but also check out the performance. It’s a spectacular thing. So, um let’s get in the car and head on up to Nottingham. And uh I’ll just take you behind the scenes of a week with me doing YouTube basically. And I noticed that Mr. Joe Achilles is here as well cuz I’ve just parked my new long termer next to Gorilla. And I have to say, Joe, those Adel Vice wheels on your car look absolutely. [Music] Okay, on our way. Um our first leg of the journey, we’re going up to stay in a little pub with rooms near Donington Park. Meet up with James from Michelam. Um 129 mi it is from Porsche. So um the cars currently show 98% of battery and 272 mi. Now, interestingly, I’m expecting the car to have been driven reasonably hard because uh it’s a Macan turbo press car, so everyone’s going to be sending it all the time. Um, but yeah, it’d be nice to spend some time in this car cuz when I drove the Macan 4, um, I only had it literally for a few hours. Um, and I just drove it over towards my favorite roads over to Newbury, but I didn’t really get chance to understand the range and living with proposition. So, what I am also going to do, I’ll do my normal walk round and stuff. I’ll do that when I get the car home. I just want to sort of try and do a slightly different review. Initial impressions on the interior. in the exterior. I love speed yellow as a color. It’s a very punchy paint to sample option. I’ll go through the spec list a bit later in the video. Um, now, as with all EVs, you have to have a bit of a plan um, in terms of charging strategy because I can’t drive all the way to Donington and all the way home again without charging. I’ve got a charger at home, so once I get home, that’s okay. Um, the hotel I’m staying in tonight, well, it’s a pub with rooms in the middle of Melbourne and I rang them today and they don’t have any destination charges. So, my plan is I’m going to drive up to Donington and then I should have enough range to drive home. And luckily on the way home, I drive almost directly past Porsche Silverstone. And that means I can jump in there and use one of their ultra rapid 350 kW chargers. Because this car’s party pieces, it charges really, really quickly. I found my first feature I really like. So, there’s a little blue LED strip, and as the light starting to fade, that becomes more and more prominent. But on the driver’s door, when you have a car in your blind spot, it turns yellow. Um, and that is such a clever thing. Now, I know most cars will have a little light or some kind of indicator in the mirror itself, but I really like that if I just pull over here and wait for a faster car to come down lane two, you’ll be able to see it. Here we go. So, we just keep an eye on that as the car comes past. It’s starting to change. There we go. And it’s just an extra visible cue to help you realize that there’s a car in the blind spot. So, I’ve basically followed ways because I presume there’s some nasty traffic. I was going to go up the 43 and then up the M1, but I’ve come across country. I’m really glad I did because it’s a nice bit of road and this car is giving me all the right feelings and the right vibes. I mean, it is proper quick this car. I It’s It’s got a It’s maximum horsepower that it quotes is only available at launch control, but it’s still let’s just say it’s 600 horsepower and oh my goodness me does it have a turn of speed. I am just mooching. I’ve I’ve not got any particular rush to get to my destination. So, I’ve just been sitting on the motorway at 70 mph. I’ve done I don’t know 67 miles. So, what’s that? An hour and 45 minutes. And I’m currently averaging one of these cars. Look, it’s 36.8 kw hours per 100 miles. Why can’t EV manufacturers standardize their efficiency measure? For goodness sake, miles per kilowatt hour, please. I’m going to have to translate that now or, you know, convert it. Pain. Absolute pain. So, I’ve arrived at my lodgings for this evening. All parked up. I’ve still got 55% of the battery, 136 miles, so plenty of mileage to get me back to Porsche Silverstone tomorrow. But also, James is here from Micheland. This is the car that I’m using on the track day tomorrow. We’re doing a really interesting video I wanted to do for a while. Basically, at the moment, it’s got a lovely brand new set of Pilot Sport 4S tires. We’re going to do the morning of the track day on Pilot Sport 4S. And then in the afternoon, we’re going to put a set of Cup Twos. and I want to see what the difference is between a Pilot Sport 4S and a Cup 2. I think that’s going to be fascinating. Anyway, I am gasping for a beer and absolutely starving hungry. So, I’m going to go inside and meet James and I’ll see you in the morning. So, we had a really nice evening, a good night’s sleep, and we have arrived at Donington Park. So, this video isn’t really about what I’m doing here with Donington Park. There’s another video coming on that one, but I have parked the Macan up in the pits and uh it’s parked next to a 918 Spider. What an absolutely stunning specification for that car. But we are here with um RMA Track Days. Um and we’ve got the Michelin 911. The premise of the video I’m shooting today is we’ve basically going to run two different sets of tires on the Michelin 911. We’re going to start off this morning on PS4 S’s. We’ve got a lovely brand new set of boots on this car. And then this afternoon, uh, we’ve got support from the guys at RPM Technic, who are actually in the next bay. So, those guys are in here. And the guys at RPM Technic are going to swap over the wheels for me. And then this afternoon, we’re going to run a set of cup twos, which is most excellent. In fact, I think they might be my wheels just there. So, yeah, this should be a good day. But uh the next time I’ll see you in this video is when we’re on our way home. What a day. What a day. So, let us head on home. Um simply magnificent day here. Massive thanks to Leighton and all the team at RMA Track Days. Um, massive thanks to James at Michelin. He’s literally just backing the car out now. He’s going to be on his way home. Um, the car’s in one piece. Um, amazing um, day of of laps. Uh, let’s just see how far I’ve got to go home. Now, I’m going to go via Porsche Silverstone because if I look at how long it is to get home, so it’s 176 miles and I’ve only got 136 miles of range. So, I’m going to go and do a bit of a vault and bolt at Porsche Silverstone. I don’t think I need to be there very long as it happens. Um, I think I’ll probably be able to stop 10 to 20 minutes and then should be on my way. So, after about an hour, we’re here at Porsche Silverstone and I think I’ve timed this perfectly for a vault and bolt. I’m showing 67 mi of range. Um, and I’ve still got 117 mi to go and I’m at 29%. That is the perfect time for a quick rapid charge. That 20 to 80%. So, I I’m going to go in here. So, what do I need to add? I need to add 60 uh I don’t know 100 miles 150 miles and then be on my way. So that’s what we’re going to do. And this is where I bought the Macan from. Here it is up here. So are they Oh, the coffee shop’s just about going to be open. They said it was going to be open till 5. So let’s just dive in here, stick the car on charge, and then hopefully I’ll get a coffee. Fingers crossed. And as if by magic, I’m plugged in and charging. Although, um, I did have a school boy error. I kind of followed the TYON in. I forgot the charge ports on a TY are on the front and the charge ports on the Macan are on the back. So, I had to just spin the car around and back it in. But yeah, I don’t think I’m going to be here for very long. I don’t know what the current rate is here. So, yeah, look, we’re currently charging at 155 kW. Um, let’s see if we get any higher than that cuz the maximum charge rate of this car is quite a bit more than that. And actually, now the other car is not plugged in. Um, that’s all good. But already, look, been plugged in for a minute and we’ve already delivered 2 1/2 kwatt hours. So, um, I don’t think we’re going to be here for very long. But I’m going to pop in and grab a coffee. I’ll see if I can anyway. Well, I’m happy to report that I made it. The lovely ladies over there made me a coffee. Although, they just cleaned their coffee machine, so I’m not very popular. But while we’re here, want to look at this Spider RS in satin black with gold wheels and gold stitching. I mean, that is just dreamy. But yes, Porsche Center Silverstone. This is where I bought the Macan and it is great to be back and also great to grab a coffee. So, barely time to finish my coffee. We’ve been charging for 19 minutes and we put 45 12 kW hours into the battery. We’re now at 73%. Still charging at over 100 kW, but that is more than I need to get home. So, going to stop charging, get in the car, and head home. Okay, that see that for me is a brilliant demonstration of when EVs are super simple. Um, oh, and by the way, let me just check cuz I think it says in here that P. So, that was 39 p per kilowatt hour. It was a Porsche charge card I used. So, um, if you have a Porsche, their charge card with ionity charges and the one their super rapid charges at Porsche centers, 39 p per kilowatt hour. So, now I’ve got uh 73% of battery. I’ve 192 miles. Um, and I’ve only got 117 left to get home and I barely had time. There was 19 minutes of charging. Absolutely brilliant. Um, and and all that took, all that took was a little bit of thought. I thought, you know what? I’m coming down the A43. I’m going to literally drive straight past Porsche Center Silverstone. I know that all Porsche centers have ultra rapid up to 350 kW chargers. I’ll just use that. And it was brilliant. Absolutely super simple. So, yeah. Well, it’s now 2 days later. I’ve had the car on charge and I haven’t checked it, but it’s probably going to be as close to full as I need it to be because tomorrow I’m heading over to the Cotsworlds uh for an event with Alpine. But before we do that, I thought it’d be cool to get the car out, park it next to my Macan, and just give you a quick walk around the outside. I have done a review of one of these before, so I’m not going to go overboard on things like too much interior size and all that kind of stuff. But I think the styling is really interesting to talk about and then the spec of this particular car. And then the next thing we’re going to do is head off to the Cotswwells to an event with Alpine. But yes, let’s drag the car out the garage and have a chat about this or a Macan GTS V6. Now, I think it’s safe to say that when the Macan EV came out, there was quite a lot of kind of negative comments about its styling. You only have to look at the comments of the two videos I’ve done with this car so far to get the feeling that its looks were a bit divisive. And if you compare it to my Macan, which isn’t its immediate predecessor, but the one before that, then there’s a lot of difference, especially the lights and the front end. I really like the design when it first came out, and it’s growing on me even more. I think it’s growing into itself. And in this speed yellow, the spec of this particular car is on point for me. I love the really aggressive chin spoiler in gloss black at the front. And I really like the lights, this kind of two-stage light. There’s a light cluster there with your DRLs. And then you’ve also got another set of lights just there. And I would argue that they’re they’re they’re obviously the same family. They’re just a different look and a different style. So, I don’t mind the front end so much from a styling point of view, but I think it’s the rear of the new Macan that’s got everybody’s tail in a spin. There’s that famous phrase, isn’t there? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What’s beautiful to you could be ugly to me and vice versa. And I really don’t have an issue with the rear end of the new Macan at all. And it’s interesting to put the two together. It’s not often you see them parked next to each other and you can pick up the cues, the things that you like on one and you dislike on another. And at the end of the day, brands need to evolve the styling and the format and the the kind of essence of cars as they go forward. And I think they wanted a big step change between internal combustion engine Macan and all EV Macan. And I think they’ve done that really well. The other thing that absolutely sets the internet on fire, and I still don’t understand why people have such a beef about it, is this is a Macan Turbo. And I’ll put money on the fact that there are comments in the comment section already. It’s an electric car, doesn’t have a turbo. And we’ve had that since Tyan came out. Turbo is a trim level for Porsche people. Um, back in the day when the first 911 turbo came out, it was a turbo. It specified the fact that that 911 had a turbo, but the vast majority of modern-day 911s are now turbocharged from 991.2 really. So, even a base Carrera or Carrera S or GTS is turbocharged. Yes, there’s still a 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S. They’re turbocharged, too, but they’re just a trim level really. The trim levels go base S, GTS, Turbo, Turbo S. It’s that simple. This goes base, then there’s a 4, then there’s a turbo. It’s just a trim level. Get over it. I know it’s an electric car. I know it doesn’t have a turbocharger on it. We all know that. It’s been a long time since Tyan came out. It’s the same with the Rena 5 Turbo 3E. It’s not got a turbocharger. Get over it. I have. Anyway, uh styling wise then, I really like it on the outside. Insidewise, it is quite different though. By the way, uh my home charging, I’ve now got 97% of the battery with a range of 254 miles. It’s probably got something to do with some enthusiastic driving I did yesterday in the car off camera, but I’ve said it uh before. I I really like this new kind of all electric touchscreen kind of interior at one level. The displays are really clear. They’re really easy to use. However, I much prefer my Macan. My Macan is peak Porsche interior. I said it on a video I did on that car when we first got it. It’s real buttons. There’s a screen for CarPlay. Everything else is kind of analog and buttons. And I just prefer it. What you find in this car is every now and again you’ll want to do something and you’ll try and work out try and work out where it is. Now, the good thing is all the HVAC controls are on well a combination of buttons and haptics along with the heated seat control. So, that’s nice because they’re the ones that I think you interact with the most. Everything else is in there. So, I prefer the old Macan interior, but I get the fact that with this being an EV, it’s got the kind of, you know, smoother touchscreeny thing. And we see that that internal screen architecture now in the latest 99 2.2 911 as well. I want to talk a little bit about spec and price. However, now this is the topsp spec um Macan. Uh, so it has 584 horsepower, but when you’re in sport plus and do launch control, that increases to 639 horsepower, which is a lot. And 1,130 Newton meters of torque at launch control. It is a very, very quick car. This naugh to 62 in 3.3 seconds, and it tops out at 162 mph. So, it’s got all of the performance that you want and need really. Um, specwise and pricewise. So, the Macan Turbo starts at £96,900, which is a lot already. And like all Porsche Press cars, this has a lot of spec on it. And when I say a lot of spec, I’m talking like 20,000 plus worth of spec. Um the really big ticket items. The first one is the color. This is speed yellow. It’s a really famous Porsche color, but it is a paint to sample color. And that is £7,500. Yeah, you get a really nice car for that, couldn’t you? Um and then I’m not going to go down all the big ticket items that I’ve I’ve kind of looked at and gone. Um the these beautiful wheels, they were nearly £3,000. the panoramic roof, £1,300. Um, the it’s got thermal and noise insulated glass. That’s £1,100 quid. Uh, rear axle steering is brilliant. It shortens the car up, makes it much easier to maneuver and so on. That’s just shy of £1,500. So, yeah, all in, oh, the Burminster Hi-Fi is nearly £3,000, but it’s excellent. So all in it’s uh just a little bit shy of £129,000 which is a lot and I know there’s going to get comments in the comments section about what this car is going to be worth in a year’s time or two years time. So they are expensive things. Um I think that reflects just generally the price of cars going up. But some of these options you could probably live without them and get the car coming in in early hundreds which a base 911 is now 103 grand. So, I actually think it’s not too horrible, but when you think I bought that used for like I think it was about 50 £53,000, it kind of shows you can almost get three of them for one of these. But yes, so uh lots of spec uh and lots of performance. Anyway, uh the next thing we’re going to do uh tomorrow um is we’re going to drive this car to the Cotswwells. Now, I’ve got a slightly different strategy from a charging point of view. I want to use all the different types of charging. We’ve already done ultra rapid charging at Porsche Silverstone. We’ve done overnight charging. If you are lucky enough to have off- streetet parking and your own charger at home, that’s the best way to exploit an EV. But when we go to the hotel we’re staying in on Sunday night this week, that has destination charging. So, I should be able to plug the car in overnight and top the battery back up again. So, hopefully we’re going to be able to do that. But yes, um the next time I see you will be tomorrow and we’ll head off to the Cotswwells. Well, we are on our way and I have to say the weather is properly groy and I’m not sure what I’m more annoyed about. The fact of having to go away on a Sunday afternoon for a press trip, although I know it’s going to be lovely or it rained this afternoon and that meant I couldn’t play paddle. In fact, it’s definitely the fact I couldn’t play paddle today. So, um, I’ve got 125 miles to go to get to the Fish Hotel in Broadway, my favorite hotel in the Cotswwells, and I’m showing 90% of battery and 236 mi of range. But I’m in normal. And actually, when you get in one of these, if you got a long way to go and it’s on the verges of um uh your range, you kind of drive a little bit more reservedly and you stay in normal, but I’ve got plenty of um battery. So, I’m actually going to put it into sport mode. So, 235 mi changes to 229. So, I’ve lost 6 miles by going into sport. Um, let me just quickly just do that again cuz I want to put the sport dampers uh or the dampers back to normal just to soften the road and I’ve also got the funky noise now so I can push on a little bit although the weather is so terrible. But what I haven’t done in this video so far is drive in a spirited fashion. I have to say in the dry this car has so much traction and grip and the performance is quite alarming. It really is a very fast car. It’s like sitting on a guided missile basically. This afternoon there’s lots of standing water around. It’s very wet. I won’t be driving too hard. But safe to say this car is very very rapid. I mean even though the road is damp. Let me just demonstrate to you launch control. I’m going to put it into sport plus. Are we ready? Let’s go. 60. You could feel all the traction systems. Let’s just knock it back into sport mode. All the traction control systems working their hardest. But I didn’t feel a great deal of wheel slip. and just an exceptional amount of acceleration. And as I said, at launch control, this car delivers over,00 Newton meters of torque and well north of 600 horsepower. Launch control is a bit of a gimmick for the vast majority of people. I mean, how many times in your daily commute are you going to stick it into launch control to get away from the lights a little bit faster? You’re not, are you? It’s brilliant for YouTubers like me to demonstrate the outright dragstrip performance of a car, but in the real world, it’s a bit silly. Anyway, I’ve got a nice long journey ahead of me, 2 and 1/2 hours. So, I’m going to stick a podcast on and I’m just going to enjoy this car a little bit. And if I get a nice bit of road that I can, you know, give it a bit of beans, I might stick the cameras on. Otherwise, I’ll see you at the fish. Jariv, welcome to the fish. One of the best views in the Cotsworlds. I love it here. I’ve stayed here so many times. So, the fact there’s a launch at my favorite hotel in the Cotworlds that used to be run by a really, really good mate of mine um is just fantastic. And there’s lots of alpines just there, which is always a good sign. Excellent. Now, we need to go down here and find the electric car chargers cuz they’re just down here on the left hand side. That’s a Tesla there. Excellent. Go electric bay. So, I’ve done a total of 4 67 miles in this car so far. Uh that’s some 10 hours of driving and um we have uh 69 miles of range left, 30% of the battery. I did drive quite enthusiastically on the way here, but let’s get the car plugged in on charge and then uh fancy a beer to be fair. So, for me, this is the other type of charging you’ve got to think about when you’ve got an EV. What I would call a destination charge point. There’s a charger at wherever you’re going. In this case, a hotel. I’ve arrived here with, I don’t know, 20% 30% of battery, whatever it might be when you arrive. And then you plug in and tomorrow morning I’ll have a full battery and I’ll be able to head on home. So, yes, all I need to do is just let the hotel know I’m in charge bay 3 and then we can start charging. But now, let’s head to the bar for a beer. Now, the best thing about staying at the fish is you get one of these from reception. And apparently I have to do that and that has just activated the charge. And the best thing is it’s free. So, I get a nice full battery. Just check it’s charging. And that is free. Most excellent. Now, that’s what I’m talking about. It is now the next morning and I’ve got 100% of charge. Oh, 256 miles of range. That’s uh maybe that shows how I was driving yesterday. Right off to Prescott Hill Climb. Uh it’s only 15 mi, so that isn’t too much of a stress at all. And we’ve got some fun today cuz we’re driving little Alpine A290s up the hill at Prescott. But this was a perfect demonstration of when having an EV and charging goes well. It’s super easy. I’m at a lovely hotel. The cars charged up overnight. It was complimentary. Doesn’t get better than that. So, we’ve arrived at Prescott Hill Climb, a super historic place. The first type of motorsport. And actually, there’s some quite cool cars arriving. Nice mini GP3 there. These cars are the cars we’ve all arrived in. Sadly, we’re not going to be using them on the hill climb. Uh, but I’ll see you at the end of the day when sadly we have to go back to Reading and drop the car off. What a giggle. Absolutely mega time. Loved every minute of that. But it is now time to head on home. Well, head on home via Porsche Center Reading or Porsche GB. But yeah, I’ve now got 72 miles to go to get to Porsche and loads of range. So, 240 mi of range. So, yeah, no worries whatsoever. Oh, I’m turning left here, am I? Interesting. So, just 7 miles to go. I’m currently sat in lane two on the M4 using adaptive cruise control and it just works really well and it’s just a super relaxing way to do a longer journey. But my final thoughts for this car, I kind of didn’t want to do a more traditional kind of review. I wanted to live with the car. I’ve done just short of 550 mi, uh, 12 hours worth of driving in this car the last few days. And I wanted to do that in an EV and just live with it and see how much of a pain it is. Because even I I mean I’m a I I’ll try and I’m not an EV fanboy by any means, but I think living with an EV today is way easier easier than it was maybe 2 years ago. Um but even I sometimes think an EV, I’ve got loads of driving. The time frames when I’m doing this are always quite tight, especially when there’s activities you need to get to. And you know, is that going to be a pain? Wouldn’t it be easier just having an a petrol car and diving into a fuel station and filling up with petrol? But honestly, um my experience the last few days has been a really really positive one. My drive up to Donington Park was nice and easy on the way back. I popped into Porsche Silverstone. I did that 19minute rapid charge. a great demonstration of of when you get a fast charge and it was a reasonable amount of money, just 39 p per kilowatt hour I think from memory. Um, and that got me enough juice in the can to get me home and then I get home and stick it on charge at home and that was super easy. I then drove to the Cotsworlds and then put a destination charge in it and that was easy and in fact that one was free even better. And it if if you just have a bit of a think and a little bit of a plan, it’s dead easy. Really, really easy and not inconvenient at all. But I love the car, the format. I think it’s uh, you know, a really interesting car. Is it a car for me? I’ll be honest with you. At £130,000, no. I’d be worried about depreciation like all of us, I’m sure. Um, but if you’re buying it through a salary sacrifice scheme or as a, you know, a work vehicle, then um, you know, there are deals to be done and clearly on the used market, I’m sure there are some great deals out there. But it’s a very, very competent car and a really lovely place to do lots of miles. And when you do get a bit of B-ro, by god is it fast. Like really, really quick. Uh, in my 550 miles, by the way, I’ve averaged 38.9 kilowatt hours per 100 miles. I’ll convert that to miles per kilowatt hour and put that on the screen. I don’t think it’s going to be a brilliant number, but I don’t think it’s going to be terrible either. It’s going to be middle ground. On a full charge, this car’s showing around about 250 to 270 miles on a where’s a 100 kWh battery, but only 95 kW hours is usable, which isn’t great to be honest. Not as good as the new Tyan. But anyway, I’d love to know what your thoughts are on the Macan Turbo. I think I’d just go for the base one to be honest. It’s fast enough. It looks just as nice. I don’t think a turbo is something that you really need. Um, great fun if you’ve got it. You don’t need it. Anyway, if you enjoyed that, please give me a thumbs up. Comments below are always welcome. And if you haven’t done so already, please subscribe to Petroed for plenty more content to come. And I’ll see you on the next film. You take care, guys. Drive safe. owe. Oh. [Music]
I spent a week with the Porsche Macan Turbo. I did a lot of miles and it really wasn’t difficult. Could to Macan Turbo make the perfect daily driver performance EV ?
