Hyundai Inster – Simply Brilliant!
I’m going to say it from the outset. This, I think, is the best value EV, certainly a small one, that I think you can buy on the new market. It’s incredible. I don’t normally say this at the beginning of the video, but just to put it into some sort of context, this is matching the range of my Model 3, the standard range. And yet, you can buy it, if you shop around, brand new, not pre-registered, for about £19,000. Now, before we go to the brilliance of the interior of this thing, let’s look around the outside. And it’s the narrowness that makes it really easy to drive. To put it into context, it’s about 11 cm narrower than a Renault 5 and about 25 cmish narrower than something like a Tesla Model 3. that makes a big difference when you’re parking it, when you’re driving it on these type of roads or just having a small car. Now, the looks, I think they still divide the comment section. It’s got a bit of the Ionic fiveness going on there with these little indicator lights here. This is your main beam. And I’m not a fan of having the charge port at the front if I’m honest. I just think a low-speed shunt’s going to cost me a lot of money. The silhouette, the side silhouette for me is very much kind of Suzuki Jimny, that sort of effect. And if you go for the cross, which is the topsp spec version, it got gets lots of sort of off-road chunkiness. I’ll put a picture up now so you can see what I mean. This for me though is the plum version. This is the level two with the bigger battery version. More on that later. And yes, it’s a tall car, which when you get inside, you’ll definitely notice that in terms of headroom. plenty of easy access in the rear and in the front. It’s not a family car, but for a car of this size, it could almost do it. It’s just not much to look at. But it it’s a grower. It’s one of those that you know what it is? It’s judge dread. It’s so bad it’s good. The back is kind of almost a mirror from the front in a sort of Citroen Amy way where they’ve used the similar panels only these are your indicators and this kind of ionic 5es pixelation. That’s your rear light and your brake light. You’ve got a rear wiper which a lot of people do always complain about with cars that don’t. This for me is its party piece. Its practicality for a car of this size is off the charts. I love this. So you’re thinking, well, it’s not a particularly big boot, is that? It’s not very practical and especially if that was back in place. You do have some storage under here. So that gives you a bit more. However, the rear seats independently move. So if you want a bigger boot instead of rear space, then you can do that. So all of a sudden, you got a much bigger practical load bay. Look at that. It’s huge, but it gets better. That fogs down, so you can get a really long load in if you want, or if you like your festivals, you it’s a double bed. They’ve even put these little flaps in, so it it remains a flat load bay. And again, you’ve still got that underneath. Right, the Insta interior is a bit of an odd one. And I’m not sure whose grandma has speced this particular press car up. Wait till you see the seats. The steering wheel feels very much like you get out of the Ionic 5. You know, it’s nice buttons. It feels chunky. It feels more expensive than the car does. But then the door cards, you’ve got all this hardware in plastic. Come to these in a second. Decent enough switch gear in terms of feel and a semi kind of pointless door bin. That’s not up to much. If I just turn the car on a second, it’s almost like somebody’s done a uh a binnacle swap, a dash swap for a more expensive car. And you’ve got buttons as Harry is demonstrating here. Can you put the heat up a little bit for me, Harry? Oh, look at that. There we go. So, it’s not all up here. In fact, everything is down here. It’s all in buttons. And this particular one, I think I’m going to put the heated seats on. Now, again, if you’re familiar with the Ionic Fives and Kia and so forth, this is something you should recognize, as is this here. It’s not the fastest, but it does Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, but you need a cable. So, we have somewhere to put your phone that does wireless charging with the tech pack. You got another bit of storage here. And down there, a three pin plug socket for the vehicle to load. Again, more on that later. And look, a shelf. Remember the was it the Jeep Avenger? That had a shelf. I think all cars should have really shelves now. Uh, and let’s get to the glove box. Oh, a a manufacturer who can do a glove box. So to put your curly on, we have a curry hook and and another one. Another one. So this is a double curry hook. Starters main course. Is this an Uber Eats car? It Oh my gosh, food you’re getting back of here. This kind of central rear bench. It’s almost like one piece. I’ll just move that rather nice. Surprisingly, it’s very train seat, but it doesn’t feel out of place. Yeah. Well, let’s show people the grandma spec that we’ve got here. Now, this comes in like black. You don’t have to get this. And it it it is growing on me in a in a weird sort of way. It’s a bit busy, isn’t it? It’s a bit odd. You can sort of see the LEDs here. So, if I change the drive mode, which flicks between sport, snow, eco, and normal, then you get the blue, the red, the uh white, and the green, of course, for eco, which looks quite effective at night. I think that’s really good. I mean, especially on a car at, you know, at this price point, you wouldn’t expect that. Now, this look at this. Just a funk, isn’t it? There’s about a foot above your head nearly. That’s crazy. And if you get the topsp spec cross trim, there’s a sunroof as well that opens. These things I’m going to have to put pictures up to explain what they’re for. You can just basically unscrew them, buy an accessory, and put like pull them on, change it, put like wallets and various. I think you can put ones with pictures. So, it’s like a picture frame. So, again, it’s like someone’s looked at every bit of this car and said, “Can we make use of that space?” I think they’ve hired someone from IKEA. Everything that I want to spend money on is here. We’ve got buttons instead of this. We I prefer that. Yes, I prefer that. And strangely, that looks very late to 80s, early 90s sort of hi-fi, doesn’t it? Lots of buttons in one place. Yeah. Now, if you just move this out of the way, you can see that you got the same sort of really nice stalks. They’ve got really nice dampening from the Ionic series. And you’ve got the same one here for drive and reverse. And if you press the button at the end, it puts it into park. And have you noticed, Harry, it’s um, you know, it’s just as smooth as the Ionic final. Really smooth. Mine’s got a really shiny end on it. Yeah, but mine’s ribbed. Now, if people could recall, we moved those seats so they’re uh in the give us as much space in the rear position. So, there’s a smaller boom now. Generous. Look at that. That’s generous. It’s a limousine back there. Look. And I don’t know if you noticed, but over your left shoulder, you can just lean back if you wish, Harry. Oh wow. Now it’s I quite like the fact they’ve only put two seats in the back instead of trying to pretend there’s a third. But look at the space you get as a two-seater. Yeah. So if again if you’ve got that three people needs to you got configurability. It’s really really like an armchair. It’s like granddad’s armchair. It’s easy to get in and out of you know. I’ve noticed there’s no cup holders. However, again, under the accessories, similar to the door ones there on the back of the seats, you can have Oh, you get a little tray. Yes. I’ll put a picture up now. They’re a little bit like you get on the train, aren’t they? Which is perfect. Going to love that, aren’t they? Yeah. Cuz the one thing that really surprised me about this is that for the money you can get this from, you would expect the ride to be compromised. It’s small car, but it’s also comfortable. Yeah, it’s comfortable. It’s it’s it’s it’s quiet relative. What are we expecting here? I mean, if you think about its competitors, now let’s This is going to be a tough one. BYD dolphin Surf and the Renault 5 bought for different reasons. I would Yeah. A weird one. This one. This one for me is the best overall package by a long shot quite frankly. I’ve got a stone in the brake that I think. Yeah. The uh Renault 5 is obviously the looker. I would go for the Renault 5. I would because of the look that shallow. I’ve driven this all week and I’ve no backachche. I’ve done a 200 mile round trip. Nothing that you would expect from a small car. No. And it’s just taken stride. Yeah. I even uh spoke to a gentleman gentleman in Germany. Yeah. Who uh did about 80 mph on the autoban. No, no problem. Absolutely fine. Wow. Oh, I forgot to mention earlier as well the usual Korean uh paddles. So, you’ve got uh different levels. I think it’s four different levels of regen. And if I do that, I’ve got full one pedal driving. This comes in three trim levels. You’ve got the one, the two, and the three. The cross. The cross. Yeah. Not the three. Uh I don’t know what happened there. And then you’ve got two battery sizes. Yep. The smallest battery is only available on the one. And uh that starts at just a shad under 20,000 this price. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Which is not bad. Not bad. That’s a that’s a 42 kW battery as well, the smaller one. And that’s usable capacity as well. So the battery that’s in the rest of them is a 49. So the 49 in the one starts at uh 213. All right. So £21,35 to be exact. So the level two, which comes with a bigger battery again, that starts at uh 235. So 23,5,000. I do carame that. No. Uh, and that you can get vehicle to load with that one. That’s an extra 500 pound, but they do charge 430 quid if you want the vehicle to load a external adapter. Yeah, unless you run an extension out the window. Yeah. So, you’re looking at nearly a grand for the full vehicle to load kind of. Again, it’s one of them is it if I if you’re going to camp and do a lot of stuff outside, it’s worth it. Probably really worth it. Yeah. Yeah. Again, extra utility. And then you’ve got the cross. Uh the cross starts at uh £25,05. Again, no way, no idea why it’s £5, but the the cross comes with Do you like when you indicate and you see the left Oh, yeah. You’ve got the You got that. You got the sunroof. Um, a few extra toys, but nothing that I’d consider that I really would want. Yeah. You get the heated steering wheel in the two, don’t you? Yeah. The heated steering wheel and the Yes. And the heated seats. Yeah. In the two. And you don’t get heated seats in the base spec. So, I again I Well, I wouldn’t bother. I think as well if you get the level two, it’s going to be worth a lot more secondhand as well. They’ve also got more performance on the larger battery, the longer range if you will. Yeah, I think what the brake horsepower, they’re not a lot. No, they’re not. They’re not. The standard one comes at 97 and the uh one with a larger battery is 115, but I’ve not felt it being too slow. It’s enough. I mean I mean I’ll put it in sport mode. Well, are you ready? So, we’re doing 20 mph. Okay. So, now it’s 30 and it picks up 40. Yeah, I have to slow for traffic. Uh, it’s fast enough. It’s enough. Yeah. For for a car of this size, it it’s I I won’t call it peppe. It’s just enough. It’s enough. It’s enough. And the handling matches the car. It’s funny. Yeah. Yeah. And it’s comfortable. That’s the ultimate uh thing that you want out of a car. You want comfort. And this is really comfy. It is. The seats probably help with that one as well. Shop around price. Yeah. This is what amazes me. So the cheapest lower battery version which we’ve said not to bother with 178 brand new. I mean just thinking three I mean know it’s got a 5year warranty but just thinking three years time. Well what what can you get for under 18 grand in petrol world? Not nothing. Not much but nothing that comes with like this all that. No no no. Uh so the one we’d recommend the level two which only comes in the bigger battery version and the more power of course the extra power of that 115 brake horsepower. uh shade under 19 grand, which is amazing, isn’t it? £19,000 for a brand new car that does 200 miles. Yeah, look at that. 457 miles. 4.4 miles per kow. And a lot of that’s been motorway. I would say 300 miles of that 450 are on the motorway. Wow. 4.4 miles per hour around town local commute. That’s going to be five easily. I saw someone post up uh on a forum basically saying that he’s getting six at the moment and that’s around town. Wow. And we’re at what between 8 and 13 degrees. So it’s it’s autumn, isn’t it? It’s not it’s not warm by any means. I don’t know what it be like in winter. It always be lower. It’s in league of its own, isn’t it? You’ve got what that’s your spring probably is the only thing that comes close in this tiny battery size of that. Well, that’s what I mean. This is This is almost like in the league of its own. I can touch that. Yeah. But you’re still quite a distance away from me. I feel Yeah. I feel like I’ve got plenty of space. And in the back is in the back. Crazy. You like that? You’re just chilling out. Yeah. Yeah. Or you want a big boot, you push them forward and then you got a big boot and then you do the shop or the garden center or whatever that people do. I’m bowled over by how good this is for the price. This should be more expensive. I don’t know if you can pick that up, but there’s basically a stone stuck in the brake calipers or something and we can’t get rid of it. It drives surprisingly well over these bumps and this this road’s really bad. Yeah. I mean, what is the compromise of this then in I don’t mind this interior because I know what I paid and you can get it in black and yeah and forgetting the the actual texture but in terms of the fit and finish is solid. So, do you know what you compromise is the looks do you know is it’s function over um form. Yeah. Oh, the one thing that I should uh point out as well is that if you hold that button down for a few seconds, it turns off the uh lane assist. And if you press that star, which is the favorite button you can configure, then you eventually get to turning off all the assistance crap. There used to be at one time it was the Germans that were, you know, who would be bringing out loads. You get the car and you go, “Oh yeah, look at that.” German ingenuity. Yeah. Clever. Yeah. That’s very clever. Korean ingenuity. It’s like the Koreans have really They’ve hired moms and dads. Yep. Yeah. Yeah. They’ve hired a guy who’s been at Takeaway and had his curry spill on the floor. has hired a guy who last worked in the 80s designing seats for Toyota. They hired him. It’s like that really badly dressed person. You see, it’s so bad. But but it’s fashionable. It’s their thing. I don’t know what it is about them. They look like a complete mess, but it’s their mess. Yeah. Come on. We have to find something negative here. There’s a stone stuck in the rear. Brakes. That’s No, it’s prone to Yeah. Well, that that would drive me up the wall. So, if if that I’m not getting it. I’m not No, I’m not either. Depreciation maybe. Yeah. When you’re spending 20 grand, the actual amount rather than the percentage. I’m just trying to think of something else. Depreciation’s buy the most cars in it at the moment. I mean, when this is 5 years old, are we looking at a £5,000 200 mile range EV when it’s a 5-y old car? It could well be. What about though, sticking with the Ford, the Pummer? I did like the new Pummer. It was good. And it wasn’t far off price-wise. I don’t quite off the range, but again, the Puma drove better. It was a Ford. It was a Ford. Yeah, it was weaky. Yeah, it was going. Go on, you can go around that roundabout a bit quicker. Uh, I did like that. Yep. Yep. Yep. I I’d probably go for the Pummer, but I’d probably regret not getting this cuz I can’t go camping in a Pummer. Forgot to mention, so the lower battery version can do 73 kW charging and the bigger battery version does 85. Kind of. I mean, it’s not brilliant, but kind of semi-relevant really. And it’s I don’t think many people are going up and down the motorway in it, but it could. Yeah. What food? Do you know what this He ask what? You ask what food every time, but it never crosses my mind and I’m driving it until you ask me. I’m like, “Oh, for God’s sakes, what food is this?” So, it’s a drunk kebab. It is. It’s It’s a kebab, right? But from like a takeaway van. Yeah. And you you’re drunk. So, it just you basically you will never be disappointed in it. And when you get it, you open the box up. The box ain’t that big, but there’s just so much of it in there. It fills you up. Yep. And you even get the little stringy pointless salad on top. Yeah. And you get that chili that no one ever eats. Yeah. Bit of dressing on there. Sweet chili sauce. And next day you’re not sure if it’s hangover or off food poisoning. There you go. Oh, this is going to be such a used bargain, isn’t it? If if they sell as many as I mean, imagine what what the lease deals like on these. Could you put them on the screen? It was on the top 10. So, this is a lease deal for the Hyundai Insta, the bigger battery version. Uh, it’s the level one. Okay. Threeyear deal, £10,000 peranom. Okay. £2,224 initial rental. Yeah. So that’s your deposit if you will. 185 quid a month. Wow. Is this the best EV pound for pound? We’ll say value that we’ve ever tested. I think so. And there’s over a hundred car reviews on my channel. Wow. No, I I I think pound for pound this is probably the car that I’ve got into and been the most impressed with and still can’t believe it’s that cheap. Yeah. Yeah. It’s by no means the one I’ve got in and gone. It’s the most exciting though. It’s the biggest. But but in terms of it being the best value, without a doubt. You keep finding stuff as well. Like, oh, it does that. No, there’s not nothing that comes really close to it. Well, how much do you think it weighs? Bear in mind, it’s got a nearly 50 kW battery. So, that’s the same as my Tesla. I think one half ton. 1,330 kg. Wow. For a petrol car, that’s light in light for a car in modern days, isn’t it? You know. Yeah. Any car, that’s part of its efficiency, I guess. Thank you very much. I’m not even going to bother mentioning all the uh poor value channel stuff because it’s I just can’t. It’s pointless, isn’t it? Really? Yeah, it’s pointless. Should you just leave on while I drive back and see how many people watch it to the end? Well, road works.
It’s small, tick. It’s got good range, tick. It’s under £20k, big tick. What’s not to like about the ugly Hyundai Inster!?
