Toyota and Subaru Sued Over Common Electric Car Mistake
Toyota and Subaru are being sued for a very common electric car problem. It’s not a problem that Toyotas and Subarus are only facing themselves. Many brands will be sued for this problem. They already have been and they will be in the future. And the truth is that this it’s just a stupid mistake that many car brands are making. I don’t care if you own this brand. It doesn’t matter. I personally own a car from a brand that has made this mistake and it is really really silly. It does not make any any financial sense. Car manufacturers who make EVs and continue doing this, they are just shooting themselves in the foot. YouTube’s new algorithm means that you’re often not getting all of our videos in your feed. Click on that and you can get an update every day of all the latest news in the electric car industry. Hello my friends, welcome to the channel. I’m Sam Evans. You’re watching the Electric Viking. Do you remember a few years ago Tesla was facing problems? Owners were owners were complaining. They were saying, “My car is bricking itself. It’s dying. This is dumb. What is going on? I don’t know what’s happened to it.” Then they find out it’s the 12vt battery. Tesla very intelligently uh did what they should do. They changed them. They started using lithium 12vt batteries. Now I personally think uh the industry car brands should not use lithium. I think it doesn’t make sense because they’re so much more expensive. Use sodium batteries for your 12vt battery. They last longer than lithium as well. Lithium phosphate sodium batteries will last significantly longer and they are cheaper. That’s what I think will happen in the future. You can already buy sodium batteries right now, right? 12vt batteries for the same price as a lead acid battery. So why the hell are manufacturers using these crap and I’m talking junk 12vt lead acid batteries in their EVs? And it’s not just it’s not just Toyota and Subaru that are doing it. But anyway, here’s one story. We’re going to see repeats of this story over and over and over. Car manufacturers, please pay attention to this video. Don’t make the same mistake. A lawsuit claims Toyota BZ4X and Subaru Sulttera EVs suffer from recurring 12vt issues. And over the last four and a half years, I’ve seen this from other brands as well. Plaintiffs say replacement 12vt batteries drain quickly, leaving EVs stranded. Owners alleged Toyota and Subaru have failed to warn buyers about recurring failures. And they’re right. I mean, this is a this is a nightmare for Toyota and Subaru. And I don’t understand why Toyota and Subaru are stupid enough to put themselves in this financial position. I mean, Toyota’s EV sales this year have gone down globally. You’d think, oh, they got all these more models. They’d go up, but they haven’t. They’ve gone down. You’d think, right, that Toyota wouldn’t want to give themselves this bad brand reputation because it can’t be bothered. Um, if you’re going to do a battery replacement, why replace it with lead acid garbage? Replace it with a sodium battery. They’re affordable. I don’t understand. If anyone can explain this to me, the reasoning behind this, yeah, they’re going to say, “Suppain, you know what? You’re Toyota. You’re big enough to fix your supply chain in 5 seconds.” If Toyota are saying, “Well, we don’t want to replace these batteries with good ones.” Um, because it’s going to cost us an extra $20. That’s just stupid. Like, that is just really, really dumb. Many electric car owners uh expect some quirks, but repeated breakdowns caused by faulty batteries, and I’m not talking the main battery. I’m talking the 12vt battery would be extremely extremely annoying. And that is what is going on at the heart of a legal battle in the United States. A class action lawsuit claims the Subaru Sulttera and the Toyota BZ4X, they fall short of their intended purpose because of persistent problems with their 12volt batteries. Toyota could have fixed this before it came to and Subaru before it came to a class action lawsuit. The only reason it’s even got to this point is because Toyota and Subaru have not been interested in actually providing a fix to this issue. Owners argue that the battery not only drains prematurely, but also continues to fail even when replaced, leaving drivers stuck with the same recurring problem. In the 2023 to 2025 Subaru Sulttera and the 2023 to 2025 Subaru BZ4X models named in the lawsuit the 12volt batteries used to operate a switch between the high voltage EV battery and the drive motors. So without it your car just dies. This powers essential functions such as the windows, the seats, the HVAC fans, radio wipers and lights. Kind of like a a radiator in a way. So if it dies, the car becomes completely inoperable. It’s well, you need to replace the battery to get the car going again. Or you can jump start it and then the car will just die later. Anyway, several owners say they have gone through multiple 12vt batteries in only a few months with some cars doing less than 10,000 miles before failure. I mean, it’s ridiculous. This has left drivers dealing with a cycle of jump starts, replacements, repeated service visits, even tow trucks because they didn’t know what was wrong with their vehicles. According to the lawsuit, Toyota and Subaru failed to adequately warn customers about the defect. Dealerships are also accused of falling short when attempting to fix the issue with the battery charging system itself suspected to be the underlying cause. So, this actually might be worse than some other car brands. Some of the car brands, I know Kia have had this issue. Hyundai’s have had this issue. So, some of the car brands, the way that they they use the 12volt battery too much, and that can be part of the problem. They have too many things going on on the app when your car’s not running, and that drains your 12volt battery. This defect also results in a considerable expenditure of time and out-of- pocket funds by plaintiffs and class members who must jumpstart their vehicles or arrange for them to be towed, wait for dealerships to charge or replace batteries, arrange separate transportation to school work, medical appointments, and so on, said the filing. A total of 10 plaintiffs are named in the class action. Some of them have had their 12vt batteries replaced free of charge under warranty, as in fact hundreds of customers have had so far. This is a very common problem. There’s not just 10 people who this has happened to. It’s been hundreds, if not thousands. But new ones will also fail as well. This is not the first time this matter has come before a judge. Toyota was previously sued by California an owner of a BZ4X and his complaint has been rolled into the current class action along with others from around the United States. I’m guessing by the time you see this video, there’ll be many other plaintiffs brought into this situation unless Toyota actually provides a legitimate fix, which they don’t seem interested in doing. Now, when I say Toyota, I say that because Subarus are Toyotas anyway. The the Sultterra is basically a rebadged um slightly modified Toyota. So, really ultimately this comes down to Toyota needing to provide a fix for a car that is sold as a BC4X or as a Subaru Sulttera. I believe there’s an easy fix, an easy solution that would enable Toyota and Subaru not to have to go to court, not to have to damage their reputation. And I’ve already said what it is. Doesn’t seem like rocket science to me. The Sydney EV International Motor Show.
