MINI Aceman – Proof Electric Cars Can Be a Laugh
Feeling really bad. Got a whole lot of problems, but they’re always by you. I’m trying my best, but I don’t know how to solve them. I don’t know what to do. If you go back 5, 10 years, how did you imagine electric cars to be? Big, bulky, heavy? Probably not. Small mini city commuters. That’s more like it. So, here we are at last. Mini electric mini. Cool. Funky. I like it. But will you? One, two, three. [Music] [Applause] The back seat is not too bad for a hatchback. I have adjusted the front seat for my height. I’ve got very decent knee room. Head room is okay. Middle seat, well, let’s not push it. The boot space is 300 L and we are sitting a little bit higher than the Mini Cooper which means it’s easier to load items in and out. [Music] A mini has got a petite 50 kWh battery. The declared range is 386 km 240 mi. But let’s get real miles winter a combination of roads and I’m guessing about 230 km 140 mi. The maximum charging speed is 95 kilowatt, which in theory should mean from 10% to 80% in 31 minutes. However, you’d be very lucky to be this quick because I’ve not been that lucky. Which means that is a long time to charge such a small battery. And moral of the story is I would only recommend this car if you’ve got a charging facility at home or work. Anyway, the cabin is cute, smart, fresh, and fits the character of this car perfectly. The materials are really nice, even this jumper style dashboard. Lovely steering wheel, good comfortable seats, and they hold your body in place. Okay, there’s a decent amount of storage room as well, whilst mobile charging, all the gimmicks and practicalities. traditional knob for volume control. Your knob for experiences, which is just a fancy name for driving modes, the infotainment system. Initially, a bit of a mumbo jumbo cocoa jumbo, but after a while, you get used to it. I just end up plugging Apple CarPlay, but I’ll show you the graphics. These are pretty good, actually. You’ve got this round run round plate. Oh dear, round plate. Anyway, that’s enough about the cabin. The ride firm and sporty, something you should probably expect from a Mini. You can’t exactly call it lush, but I want to point out that the ride is never uncomfortable. It is also very quiet, even at higher speeds. Not much wind noise, not much tire noise. It feels small, light, nifty. Some classify this car as an SUV. Listen, it is slightly bigger than the standard Mini Cooper. So, no, it’s definitely a hatch. Now, where do we go? [Music] Being a Mini, the handling should in theory be non-negotiable. And here, once the rubber hits the road, it is truly impressive. It feels so planted. The grip is fantastic, fun to drive, alive, joyful to just zip in and out. The steering is sharp and pointy. It accelerates really smoothly and nicely. 218 horses, 330 Newton meters of torque being sent to your front wheels, corners, twisty roads. This car absolutely loves it, which is unusual for an EV simply because the vast majority of them feel too fat, too heavy. This car does pack a punch. So, not exactly a distance muncher. This car is perfectly suited for short trips and city commutes. But I must admit, I like it a lot more than I thought I would. I think it’s cool and exactly how I imagined electric cars to be. Small and nifty. And just to clarify, I was never against EVs. But what I was and am against is forcing everyone to drive it. Let it go, Greenies. not going to happen in our lifetime. And what are your thoughts on this pocket rocket? Let me know in the comments below. Thank you so much for watching and I’ll see you next time. Bye.
Electric cars have become appliances – heavy, sensible, sensible again, and about as exciting as a dishwasher on wheels.
And then the MINI Aceman turned up and reminded me that driving is supposed to be fun.
This isn’t another 3-ton electric sofa. It’s small, cheeky, light on its feet and actually wants to be driven. It makes you grin in a way most EVs simply don’t.
In this review:

If more EVs were like this, the world would complain a lot less.
