Hey everyone, I’m Tom. This is Joy. Hello. And welcome to our review of the BMW X3e plug-in hybrid. Let’s go check it out. A lot of numbers. Lot of numbers. Okay, so the full name of this vehicle is the BMW X330e X drive plug-in hybrid, just to be absolutely pedantic on the name, right? Uh, so yeah, if you paid that much money for the car, I suppose you want a really long name for it. Yeah, that’s right. So, it is the plug-in hybrid version of the X3. There is an ICE version, of course. There is an EX-3, the new one coming next year, which we’ll hopefully review as well for you on the channel, as in the full battery version. Full battery version. Yep. And you can expect a driveaway price of around $115,000. Um, it is about $99,000 before onroads. Uh, the I think the ICE version of that car is about $15,000 less just uh for interest sake. Uh, I’ll give you some technical specs as we walk around the vehicle. So, they say 91 km of all electric range on the 19 kWh battery. Um, I think you can get more likely to get about 70 to 75ks if you are lucky. We tested that in the real world recently. Uh, 11 kW AC charging power. And I say AC only because there is no DC charging. I’ll show you in a second with the charge port. It’s 4. To be fair, if it was DC charging, by the time you plugged it in, you’d have to unplug it. Yeah, it’s a small battery. Um, having said that though, the other plug-in hybrids we’ve tested, like for example, the Cine 6 from BYD, the GWMH6 also has DC charging. They do have slightly bigger batteries though, don’t they? About the same actually. Now, the BYDC Line 6 has an 18 kW battery. Max smaller than this one. Well, there you go. So, there you go. Um, so you’re at 106.2 seconds. This is an allwheel drive variant. And of course, with the petrol engine, you can actually get more range as well. So, that is the benefit of a hybrid, of course. So, like I said, 4.7 m in length. So, very similar to Tesla Model Y, just for a reference. Um, and this is the first time I’ve driven a BMW for a substantial amount of time. If you don’t count the Rolls-Royce we had for 7 hours, which is obviously owned by BMW Motors these days. So, you know, signature grill the front here. Very BMWesque. You’re paying for this badge, aren’t you? This legacy badge. And I will I will talk more about that later, but I actually think in terms of like getting what you paid for, I think you do with this. Okay. Yep. Yeah. All right. Uh let’s keep stayuned. Keep walking around. Thoughts. Yeah. Give us your thoughts on the shape of the car. Look very sort of angular boxy uh midsize SUV. This color is not too bad. This creamy kind of color. Again, you’re paying for this badge as well. The M logo. Rear tinted. Yep. Second row. Well, it’s rear tinted windows and the shade which we will show I guess when we inter quite a handy feature I must say. Yeah. For the family. Yep. That’s the petrol side. I’m not going to show you that. Rear wipers again. BMW badge X330e. Just denoting the hybrid version of it. All the modcons you’d expect. Lift gate. Pretty roomy. Extra netting. Yep. More uh storage on that side, that side. Ski tunnel. Being European, you kind of expect that. This one came with a um 10 amp charger and a type two cable. Nice little bags like that. I think this is a tire compressor kit. Oh, no. It’s a first a kit. Okay. First a kit for yourself, not the car. and a pretty uh pretty big castle kind of divider there which Yeah. flimsy. Yeah. Wouldn’t put anything heavy on top of that. But yeah, walk around this way. Look, I get the That’s a very silent close. There was no warning beep. No, that’s right. Interesting. Look, I do get the appeal of driving a legacy European brand. I do. Don’t get me wrong. like, you know, if I wasn’t into EVs, in fact, I I was considering buying BMW before uh before Tesla came along in uh the early 2010s, uh BMW, Mercedes, like you know, they’re the kind of standard luxury brands that people go for. Can I can I just say you are actually wearing the shirt that I think fits with the car, okay? Because it’s a safe a safe brand, isn’t it? And BMW is a safe brand. Like it’s just it’s a bit boring, but it’s, you know, you’re getting sort of quality value for money. It’s something that you can like with this shirt. You can just you can like you wear it all the time. You’ve seen it on all the videos. Exactly. This car is like a uniform. But and I don’t say that in a negative way like calling calling it boring going to upset some of the fan boys and fan girls. I wish there were many. Safe. It’s safe. It is safe, you know. Okay, so this is what surprised me when I tried to DC charge this car because it does. This press car did come with a charge fox free charging. Oh, great. Free charging with with charge fox, but I was like, oh, I got a shock on my life. Like, oh, I don’t think I’ve seen apart from that’s not an electric shock. No, not a shock. Apart from like the legacy Tesla Model S and X’s, which only had a type two port, but they were specialized DC. This is the first time I’ve seen a just an AC plug. So unique in that way. I guess I guess look most people are probably going to charge at home, right? Exactly. So 11 kW AC. Yeah. So range wise, I think, yeah, like I said before, 91 km officially, but I think you’re probably going to get 70 to 80 if you’re lucky with an efficiency of uh 24 kW hours per 100 km by their own emission. It’s about 70 km, I think, for a 19 kil kilowatt hour battery. And obviously the signature grill. This is what BMW is known for. There you go. BMW X330e X drive plug-in hybrid. Rolls off the tongue, isn’t it? And you know, like Joyce said, you’re not going to go wrong, right? Buying this. Like BMW straight away, people go, “Oh, okay. This person’s made it in this world. They’ve got a BMW.” Carries with a certain prestige, right? Well, okay. I wouldn’t say that you’ve you’ve made it, but you need to be a certain level of financial comfort to be able to afford this car. Yeah. Um, so I think if you drive this car, it just says I’m not struggling dayto-day, you know, like cost of living is not an issue for me, um, which is which is fine. But the thing is, the other thing I was going to say is that I don’t think this is bad value for money. you know, $1,000 for a plug-in hybrid. Well, like I said, you’re paying for the you’re paying for the badging. And I think in this case, I think, you know, well, that’s why I said that’s what this was the very first thing I said when I pointed this car that you pay for the badging. But however, in terms of paying for the badging between say the Porsche Tyken that we saw versus was it Tyken or Macan? Macan. Okay. So, the Porsche Macan, that one is like I feel that was not value for money in terms of paying for the badging. Where else? I think for this one I think it is worth the badging price. Depends on your point of view, right? Some people want to pay for that Porsche. Yes. And where do you grade Porsche versus BMW? Right. Well, it’s like Okay, I’m going to get into so much trouble here. Is it Lacost versus Ralph Lauren versus Ralph? Yeah, it’s a tough one. Someone is screaming in the comments. I’m sorry. Value is very subjective. It’s a difficult question to answer. Look, the BMW brand, I must say, of the European brands, it’s it’s one of my favorites. I must say, if you compare Mercedes, BMW, VW, all the other European brands, VW do it, sorry, BMW do it very well. Um, and and the software, I must say, it’s the software is quite good. I think it’s better than VW for sure and probably better than Merced from what I’ve seen. So, and and we’ve driven the Mini a few times as well, and that’s the software in that’s quite good. So BMW excels I think. The other thing is that you know we do know like we personally know quite a few people who drive BMWs and they tend to stick with BMWs and I think that says something as well. You know it’s like they’ll upgrade to another BMW so they stay with the brand. Um I always think that tells you a lot. It does. Yeah. It’s a bit of brand loyalty. They do like to complain about their BMW how much it cost the service. Yeah. But they but they stick with it. That’s probably part of the appeal of being able to complain that you can but they they stick with it and they buy another BMW and I think that says a lot. Powered seats. That’s um interesting. Look, I’m always a fan of chrome pedals. Can I just say a lot of the BMW controls are binary. Um see one zero, right? And that’s I think No, no, look. I know. But it’s like one zero one zero. And you see that throughout it’s a bit of a theme. And I think that’s to do with the vents. I think this actually controls the vents there because the fan speed is um dependent on what you select. But it’s not one or zero. There’s gradations, but the grad but then it’s like one zero. It’s like almost minimalistic. You know, if you get it, you get it right. Max is one, zero is nothing. I reckon they should have had like nothing here and then made them, you know, like small and then this one a longer line. And then you don’t even need a one or a zero. Bit of UX there. Yeah. Yep. Um, this is for seat control, like you know, um, seat position control, unlike the Rolls-Royce. We’ve just got our own um, it doesn’t umbrella doesn’t like pop out the side there. It’s not the same. I might check out your side to see what you’ve got on your side. I’m sure it’s very similar. I’m very sure it would be powered. Surely for $100,000 vehicle. Yeah. Yeah. And lumber support. Of course. I wouldn’t have expected anything less. But we got to be sure. We got to be sure. Well, okay. See, that’s the thing. Like honestly, because it’s a BMW, I knew it was going to have it. And look, you know what? I think that’s the thing. It’s a shortcut, isn’t it? Because, you know, you don’t have to go trolling through all the specs to double check it’s got this feature or that feature or, you know what I mean? Like, you just if you buy a BMW, you know, it’s probably going to have the stuff that I wanted and those sort of features. That’s why the sound was so good this week. Harmon, very good sound system. I’d say 9 out of 10. It’s very good. Well, eight eight to nine out of 10. Um, I didn’t notice that the seats were this color um in this light. It’s like this uh I don’t know what what it brown. I still know cuz I always go by coffee, right? So the other one was the other sort of lighter one was like oat latte. So this one is more This is This is like a flat white. What? What are you talking about? The See the car the Yeah, but it’s not mocker. It’s a bit too dark for I think it’s a flat Well, okay. A strong flat white. Double shot. Double shot maybe. Yep. Okay. What would you think it is? Uh like a I would say actually to be honest with you. Flavor would be lighter, wouldn’t it? Maybe it’s okay. Look. Maybe it’s a hot chocolate. Okay. Hot chocolate. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No. I’m probably giving away how strong I want my coffee. It was a bit browner than I thought. I thought thought it’d be um more dark. So, yeah, good to see it in the light. And there is a uh a moon roof with a powered sunshade. Again, it’s kind of expected features. It is. And that’s the thing, right? You know, it’s just going to come with it. Um in the rear, you’ve also got um air conditioning controls, too. See, you’ve got um Yeah. And these vents are all This theme is throughout the whole um cabin. This four-way um four-way vent control. I like manual vents. I do, too. Yep. Two USBC’s. See, I don’t mind if this is like electronic, but moving the actual vent itself should be manual. No, I agree. I agree. And heated seat on the outboard seats. Don’t like this though. This hump in the middle transmission. That’s what That’s what you get for it being a PHV. Yeah. Essentially nice with a bit small battery. This I think is an accessory thing. Surely this little slidy thing. What we got? Uh drink holders. standard ski tunnel. Very European. I go skiing in Sydney, so not my concern. Although you might go skiing in the New South Wales slopes. I guess more accessory doies. Oh, there’s that little triangle. Um what do you call it? Hazard triangle thing. Yeah. Yep. Yeah. Interesting design here. Okay. Uh, let’s pop into the front. Okay, let’s pop the air on. It’s very uh reminiscent of the Mini that we had. These odd sounds. Uh, yeah. So, pretty standard controls here. Get with most cars now. Cruise control on one side, media controls on the other, left side indicate, auto wipers, auto sensing, um, wipers, auto lights. Uh, I think the LED matrix as well cuz it was I think it was blocking up the other cars with high beams on. Um, nice big storage area down here. More USBC ports, big M logo, big drink holders. Sorry. More storage down here. More media controls here. Gear shifters here. Starts up because it’s a nice basically with a battery. And again, the software is quite good I find. Oh, and by the way, more ones and zeros. See, this this theme is prevalent throughout zero. Slide your fan speed on the vent opening I guess on this uh while someone really just likes their probability, isn’t it? Like one being Yeah. the max and then zero being nothing. Wireless Apple CarPlay or head-up display as well, which you can obviously adjust. If you want to fiddle with the AC, you can as well. Pretty standard there. Reclimate, which you can turn on and off. Preconditioning. I’m sure with the app, you can do all that as well. Just your standard settings. Now, the settings remind me of the Rolls-Royce. How about that? It reminds me of the Rolls-Royce which we had last early this year. So again, I want to go through all this system settings. Yeah, pretty standard. Um, go through where was it? Oh, you can do shortcuts, too. So, live vehicle, you can look at the um efficiency. So, since I’ve been driving um the fuel efficiency, cuz I must admit, I’ve been quite lazy this week. Hadn’t been charging it. So, just seeing what it’s like if you don’t charge it. You get 7.8 L per 100 ks, which is a little bit on the high side for a nice um in terms of efficiency. I I think I only used one charge of the car. Um and that’s not a true efficiency cuz it actually averages out all the distance that you’ve traveled, which is 388 km. Be nice if that was more discreet and and showed you what the efficiency was of the electric part of the drive. Yeah, that would make more sense. It would. Right. Which apparently is 197. The other thing is too, it doesn’t charge the battery very well. So, I’m stuck on like zero. See, zero charge. It charges a little bit, but nothing too significant. I think the most I’ve ever seen, like I got maybe 10 kilometers out of selfcharging, like the engine charging the the vehicle. And like regen braking doesn’t do anything. It’s just the brake just gets hot and you just lose all the um lose all the kinetic energy. There is some regen braking, but not one pedal. So again, the software is look, I must admit it’s not as good as the Chinese software or Tesla for that matter, but it’s not bad for a European car. Okay, probably best of the bunch, honestly. So yeah, I won’t fiddle with that too much. So just very standard BMW, which is good if you’re coming from like a petrol BMW. Yeah. So, I guess we should talk about that probably a bit later on once we go for a drive. Like, who is this car designed for? Probably another BMW driver, right? An ex BMW owner or not ex BMW owner is looking to maybe take the electric, you know, change, but not quite there yet. So, this hybrid is a good sort of midway point. Yep. Well, I wouldn’t say midway. 25% point. Yeah. Halfway. It’s a step in the right direction. Transition. I wouldn’t say it’s halfway, but it is definitely a step in the right direction. Mhm. Yeah. Yeah. Look, that’s good that BMW loan uses this car. We we are getting um a full electric one very soon on the channel, so stay tuned for that, too. And obviously, we have a terrible bias on this channel towards full electric vehicles. So, we are definitely very much looking forward to that particular model. But happy for those who are stepping into the electric zone using this as a stepping stone. Yes. Yes. So, but we’re very open about our bias here. Of course, we will always choose a battery um full battery vehicle over a hybrid, but we do see um we do see that there is a need for transition models such as this one. Absolutely. Yeah. Let’s go for a drive. So, Joy, how are you finding the drive so far? Really very pleasant, honestly. Um, you know, for a a hybrid and which is currently driving in full ice boat, um, it’s really quite pleasant. I I can understand the appeal of a BMW, you know. Um, and I I think BMW are known for its like tighter steering. Um, which I love. I’m in S mode, which I assume is sport mode. I I found some buttons here. there was like a D and an S. So, I thought, well, S is probably going to be what I want. So, um I have to say, yeah, it’s it’s it’s okay. I mean, there’s obviously there’s no one pedal driving. There’s none of that. I have to push the brake way in advance. I have to use both the accelerator and the brake when I’m making a turn. Um so, it it’s a bit old school, but yeah. All in all, like I I I get the appeal of a BMW. It drives nicely. It’s it’s an allwhe drive power trade, too. Yes. And um the sound system is uh chef’s kiss. Yeah, it’s pretty good. That that always adds to my um Yeah, it it it it does make a big difference when you’re driving. Like the sound system can Yeah. cover a lot of things in terms of how I feel when I’m driving. Yeah. For me, it’s eight and a half to nine out of 10. I think Pstar 4 is still better in my books, but it’s pretty good. This car is pretty good. Yeah. Yeah. And I have driven this in the electric mode early this week and it is still pretty good. Allwheel drive, pretty balanced. Efficiency is not great. 24 kwatt hours 100ks, but hey, if you’re charging it every day, no big deal, right? Yep. If you go home and plug it in every day. Yeah. Um, and stereotyping here, but chances are if you’re driving a BMW, you’re probably not doing a massively long commute. Um, so 70ks will probably be okay for you. M but because it’s a plug-in hybrid. Of course, if you’re lazy like me this week, then it will just run into the petrol engine, right? Well, okay. It’s not about laziness cuz I I do feel that, you know, um like I said, this car this is this car is a shortcut for like brand quality, right? So, you know, if you’re buying into the brand, you know, you don’t have to look up all the specs and all that. And I think this is for the people for whom, you know, they’re kind of time poor, but they don’t want to sacrifice, right? So, this is this is where I think this comes in handy. And it’s not about laziness. Um, it is for me. It is. Well, it’s about being time poor. And also, if you’re the kind of person who you forget to charge your phone, okay, now that is definitely not me. I’m the kind of like phone’s always at 90%. Which I know is not good for battery degradation, but hey. Um, so if you’re the kind of person who looks at your phone and it’s on 10%. And you obviously you don’t want that kind of personality and getting into an into a full EV, right? then this is a good option. You’ve got you’ve got the battery for when you remember to plug your car in, but you’ve got the massive petrol tank for those days that you forgot to plug the battery in. So, okay. So, what what it boils down to is a BM BMW fan or at least a legacy auto fan. Uh someone who wants to play it safe. um someone who wants to take a shortcut like you said, but to buy to buy a brand that is well known for its quality and its safety and all that kind of thing, but you don’t want to make the leap to a full EV yet. That’s right. You’re electro curious. Yes. But still want to dip your toes a little bit first. Yeah. Like you don’t want to drive the same BMW that all your all your friends and colleagues are driving, right? You want to be a little bit different from them, but you’re not quite ready to go full EV. What do you got there? Oh, it’s a This is a good way hybrid. It’s a good way of testing, you know, testing and seeing, okay, would I be able to cope with a full battery electric vehicle? Yeah, I I think if you were to buy this car, I would uh recommend charging it. Oh gosh, that car just completely ran the red. That red car. Sorry, I just stopped in my there. They don’t I mean, it’s a confusing intersection. It is a bit, but still. Wow. Okay, so that’s I stopped dead in my tracks there. Yeah, but look, it’s it’s why, you know, our our son’s currently on his L’s and we just keep telling him just expect people to be doing the wrong thing all the time. Full on. Yeah, that’s scary actually. Could have been quite dangerous. Uh what was I saying? Yes. So, I think that’s for me that’s the target market. They won’t get too many sales, I don’t think. Maybe. I mean, the BMW Ess$20,000 extra over a like the full petrol version. I would love for the people who would have normally gone for the full petrol version to pay that 1520 to see what it would be like to have like a quote unquote EV lifestyle, right? Like would this fit? Electro curious. Yeah. So I I I love that BMW have this option because you know like I said the BMW for me I feel the BMW driver is someone who makes the decision and sticks with it, right? They buy a BMW and the next car is a BMW. So change is not, you know, they don’t want to keep changing and learning new systems. So this is a really good way of like gradually introducing them. Yeah. The brand loyalty is very strong with BMW and for a good reason. They’re good cars. They are good cars. Are you going to indicate or you going to be a BMW driver here? Oh, I see. Must be something. There’s something in the air con, right? Cuz Joy is normally like that’s so funny. She loves to indicate. Even on the racetrack, she indicates. Look, I’m going to indicate. Oh, that is Oh my goodness. Okay, I didn’t want to say anything till the last minute. Caught out. I was genuinely not doing that as a gag. I Oh my goodness. Caught out. Oh, that is very embarrassing. When in Rome, right? When in Rome. Oh my goodness. So, without stereotyping too much, I think Joy would probably be the ideal clientele for BMW. She is she’s like she works hard as a mom both in her business and also for her kids. Uh she wants a safe car. She’s driving around town most days, some motorway driving, some you know mostly urban driving. This car would actually be quite a good fit for her. Look, I would say this would have been a good car if all the other Chinese brands didn’t exist. So if you rewind back to vehicle on shoulder like what what are we talking now? like 10 5 years ago. Four, even three years ago. Yeah. 3 5 years ago, um, absolutely. I mean, maybe not the hybrid version, but the the full EV version would have absolutely been on my radar. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. If there was no Tesla, no BYD, no Chinese cars, EVs didn’t exist, this would I honestly would probably go for BMW. Yep. There you go. It’s a comfortable ride, honestly. Even for an ice car, it’s not bad. Yeah, especially cuz remember this part of the road that we’re on now is normally, you know. Yeah. Yeah. Suspension’s good. It’s comfort. Yeah, it’s good. So, you know, with a nice road, it’s actually really quite quiet. Quite smooth. Mhm. The good good uh car to take on the road. Like I said, it’s really it’s really pleasant. There’s there’s you you can’t complain. Like, you pay the money, but you pay the money for a reason. M um and you get I I feel you get what you pay for like in a good way like you know what I mean? You spend the money but you it it doesn’t feel like a waste. Yeah. Well, I just want to thank BMW Australia again for loaning us this car. I’m actually looking forward to the uh next car we’ve got, which is an EV. Very looking forward to that. I’m looking forward to that. That’s what makes me very excited. We’ve driven the Mini Countryman. That was a nice drive, I thought. and hopefully the BMW um I think it’s the EX we’re getting. So hopefully that’ll be a nice drive as well. So uh stay tuned everyone. But I love that this exists. And so for for anyone who’s looking at the is it just the X? Sorry, like what is the petrol version? Uh X3 and then this is X3 hybrid. Yes. So if you’re just looking at the X3, please have a look at this one cuz look, let’s face it, if you’re looking at the X3, money’s probably, you know, you’re not scrimping your pennies. So, you probably can afford to drop another 15, you know, 15k on this one. So, please check it out. Please have a look and to see, you know, would this, you know, would this actually be a nice alternative? And speaking of pennies, you probably would make it back if you were to just drive on the electric powertrain and charging from solar or from a cheaper tariff as opposed to paying god knows what premium unleted, right, for this car with a big tank. That’s true. like you pay $15,000 more, but if you, you know, plug at home every day and and look, if you if you don’t like going to look, I’m indicating. Okay. Y spontaneously, if you don’t like going to petrol stations, right? If you bought this car, you could potentially never have to go to a petrol station unless you’re doing a long trip, right? Which I think that’s fabulous, isn’t it? Like that will save you a lot of time as well. So again, I I feel like this is a good car for people who are time poor. Um you would be saving time just plugging your car in every day. At least every couple of days maybe. Yep. Yep. All righty. Well, uh a lot of a lot of benefits. Yeah. Let’s turn the indicator off now. Joyy’s going overboard with the indicator. Am I going to turn Don’t hurt yourself. Um but um that’s it from Joy myself. Uh thank you again to BMW Australia. Stay tuned for our review. It’s actually a lovely indicator. They do exist. It’s not that they’re difficult to use. We have proof they exist on BMW. All right, let’s go. Look, it’s a green light and I forgot to go. Yeah. All right, everyone. Thanks for watching. It’s a lovely car. Maybe that’s why cuz you’re just enjoying the car, isn’t it? You forget to indicate from Joy and myself. Thanks for watching. Uh, as always, happy charging.

In our latest review, Tom and Joy from Ludicrous Feed take a close look at the BMW X3 30e xDrive plug-in hybrid, analysing its Australian pricing, starting from around around $99,000 before on-road costs. We delve into its real-world electric range, which we found to be closer to 70-80 km from its 19 kWh battery, its 11 kW AC charging capability, and its overall driving dynamics, from the quiet EV mode to the combined petrol-electric powertrain. We discuss who this PHEV is for, concluding it’s a solid transitional vehicle for the ‘electro-curious’ BMW loyalist or anyone seeking a safe, premium brand with the flexibility of electric driving for daily commutes and a petrol engine for longer trips, all while considering its value proposition in a growing market of full-electric alternatives | Video by Tom Gan (Tesla Tom) and Joy of Ludicrous Feed from Sydney Australia November 2025
