Germany Goes Electric: 30% EV Share as Tesla Falls

EV sales in Germany are now at 30%. In fact, nearly 31%. YouTube’s new algorithm means that you’re often not getting all of our videos in your feed. There’s 7,500. I’m pretty sure you’re probably not seeing a lot of them. In the description, there is a link to our newsletter. Click on that and you can get an update every day of all the latest news in the electric car industry. Hello, my friends. Welcome to the channel. I’m Sam Evans. You’re watching the Electric Viking. Great to have you here. EV sales in Germany. I mean, plug-in sales are nearly 31%. The truth is that EV sales are actually similar in terms of percentages to what they were 2 years ago. But the reason for that is that two years ago there were some really generous large EV incentives in Germany and they were about to end sort of like what’s happening right now in the United States. So people went and bought heaps of EVs to get the subsidies and then EV sales went down in Germany. However, they’ve now bounced back and well, fully electric cars now account for 19% of all cars sold in Germany. Plug-in hybrids, so hybrids that you can actually plug into an electrical point and recharge the battery, account for 11.6%, meaning nearly 31% of all vehicles in Germany in August were electrified. Now, it’s an interesting situation here because Tesla sales have continued to decline whereas cars from other brands have continued to increase. But having a look at the percentages of different types of engines, as you can see here, diesel vehicles make up a very small percentage of sales. Now, that didn’t used to be the case. Hybrid sales um have grown significantly. Plug-in hybrid sales have also grown a lot. and and clearly EV sales have also but EV sales probably not at the pace I would have personally expected. One of the reasons could for that could be that EVs are actually a lot more expensive in Germany than what they are in Australia or even significantly more expensive than what they cost in the United States, which is I think um very strange, but partially because partially because Germany or Europe puts massive EV taxes on Chinese-made vehicles, making them it’s really difficult for EV makers from China to sell them in Germany at prices that they should be selling them at, that they would if they didn’t have to pay such huge taxes. The Volkswagen ID3 was once again the bestselling EV in Germany. This means for three consecutive months, it’s been in first place. August volume, so sales were 2350, down from the previous four months. But this is an interesting numbers here. ID3 sales 2350 in first place. In second ID4/ID5, 1,814. Third, Scoda Lrock, which is 1,731. Fourth, Volkswagen ID7, BMW EX-1 was next. Scot Enyak Mini Kooper, Audi Q4 Ron. Guys, looking all the way down this list into 20th place is the Tesla Model Y with only 678 sales. And the same thing has happened to the Tesla Model 3, 754 sales in 18th place. Clearly in Germany, this has to be influenced by Elon Musk because let’s be real, the truth truth. Let’s be just factual for a minute. And I I understand if you don’t like Tesla, but even if you don’t like them, the Model 3 and the Model Y are the two best cars you can buy in Germany when it comes to EVs and probably period market in terms of what they cost for what you get. They’re the two best cars in Germany. People aren’t buying them. Very small sales numbers. So, I think it’s very clear what’s happened there. first five months of the year, the Volkswagen ID7 was in top spot, which is surprising to me. So, ID7 has sold really well this year in Germany. Now, looking at sales figures for the last 3 months, ID3 first place, ID7 second place, ID4/ID5 third place. So Volkswagen is completely dominating EV sales in Germany because in fifth place is the Scoda Lrock and that’s a Volkswagen Group brand as well. BMW next in sixth. Scoda Enyak, Coopra, Mini Cooper, Audi Q6 Ron, Hyundai Insta, Ford Explorer, Audi Q4 Ron, Fiat 500E, Audi A6 Ron, Mercedes EQA, BMW i4, Tesla Model Y, all the way back down in 16th place. I mean, the Tesla Model 3 isn’t even on the list, which is um not even a top 20 EV in Germany this year. Yeah, it’s amazing, isn’t it? The difference here that um you know, obviously clearly a car, buying a car for most people is actually an emotional decision. They don’t think it is. But I think we don’t we undervalue or we under we we underestimate I should say the amount of emotionality that goes into making a big purchase. We think a big purchase is about logic but actually there’s also a lot of emotion involved as well. Groups here you can see the Volkswagen group well out in first place with 54,000 sales. BMW 18,000. Stalantis 12,000 Hyundai 11,000 Mercedes 9 a half th000 Renault 5470 Ford 5,161 Tesla 4,410 now I’m aware that these sales figures include plug-in hybrids but still the fact that Ford is betting Tesla in Germany and even Renault Renault Nissen are betting Tesla it shows you the well stark numbers we’re seeing but for me the big takeaway is yes. Yes, of course Tesla’s struggling in Germany, but overall EV sales are increasing. I can’t help thinking though, imagine where Tesla and the entire EV market in Germany could be if all this stuff hadn’t happened, all this Trump stuff. And I wonder if it could be even better than where we’re at today. Guys, what are your thoughts? is um am I barking up the wrong tree or is this actually a real possibility that Germany could have sold even more electric cars?
