New IIHS ratings for seven electric vehicles

IIHS just tested seven EVs in three key
safety tests. Here’s what to know. The BMW i4, Tesla Cybertruck, Volkswagen ID Buzz, and
Chevrolet Blazer EV scored good ratings in our updated moderate overlap front crash test,
while the Tesla Model 3 scored the second highest rating of acceptable. Two models didn’t perform
as well. We’ll talk about them in a moment. All seven scored solid ratings in our pedestrian
front crash prevention tests, though the Blazer EV and ID Buzz did struggle to stop or slow
significantly in a few scenarios and earn only acceptable ratings overall. The BMW i4 and Tesla
Cybertruck were standouts in our headlight tests, but not in a good way. The i4 is available
with two different headlight options, one of which rates marginal for visibility and glare
issues, and one rates poor for having excessive glare. The Cybertruck standard headlights also
had problems with excessive glare and earn an overall rating of poor. The other five models we
tested earn acceptable in our headlight tests. So, there’s room for improvement across the
board for this group. Okay, so back to the F-150 Lightning and the Nissan Ariya, which
earned poor and marginal ratings, respectively, in our updated moderate overlap front crash
test. Both had issues with protecting the second row occupant. In the case of the Ariya, the dummy
experienced high forces on its chest during the crash, which brought down the overall rating. The
F-150 Lightning had several problems. First off, notice this airbag getting hung up during the
crash. But the bigger issues were with the seat belt. Watch here as the belt slides into the
dummy’s abdomen while the shoulder belt also rides up into its neck. In short, that seat
belt is not doing a good job of controlling that dummy’s movement, and we saw elevated injury
risk to the neck and the chest of that dummy. Now, you can learn more about these ratings or check
ratings for other vehicles over at IIHS.org.
