Lucid Gravity: The Greatest Ever Luxury SUV?
Second acts are a tricky thing, especially if your debut goes on to set records. For Lucid, their first car was the Air, and it set records in terms of efficiency and range, being the first car in North America to deliver over 400 miles of it. So, if you’re Lucid, how do you follow that up in your second act? With this. This is the Lucid Gravity, and it takes a lot of what we love about the air, the magic and DNA, and blows it up to SUV proportions. Now, love them or may hate them, SUVs are incredibly popular here in North America. And Lucid hopes they have a winner on their hands, one that’ll go on to set records of its own. And with 450 mi of range and the most aerodynamic SUV you can buy, they just might be on to something. So, we’re here in beautiful Northern California on a perfect California day to see just how good this thing actually is. I’m Ricky and this is the Lucid Gravity. Our three So, we never get as much time as we want with these cars, so it’s always tough to formulate your opinions, but I actually wanted to take even longer before actually filming this because this car handles like a dream. I’m driving in canyon roads, probably a little bit too fast, but having fun, and this car is incredibly planted. If you compare this with other three row SUVs in its class, we’re talking like the Escalade IQ, Rivian R1S, the Ioni 9, Kia EV9, this is in another world in terms of performance. In fact, let’s go ahead and Yeah, it’s in the low ride height. And you can kind of just feel how planted this car feels. You forget you’re driving an SUV, and this is not a light car, but you forget just how much weight it has just with how well tuned this chassis is. It is really, really remarkable. In fact, some of the Lucid engineers mentioned that they were benchmarking cars like the Lamborghini Urus when they were developing this in chassis tuning. And it kind of shows. I think this car is probably faster out of a corner than any Lamborghini Urus. Look at this. And that’s so much fun. And it handles like an absolute dream. This is part of the magic, right? It’s smaller than it should be. It’s faster than it should be. It’s more roomy than it should be. Um, it is a really interesting package. Another thing that I absolutely love about this car is their regenerative braking settings go from high, medium, and low. And on high, which is how I always drive. I’m a wet puddle driver. It has up to.3 gs of deceleration. So, I’m going to try that here. It feels like braking, but it actually is not. I have not used the brakes on this car, I don’t think, since I’ve left their studio. Here we go. We’re doing 70. And that is off. That is regenerative braking. That feels like mechanical brakes. That is some of the best I’ve ever seen. Much better than my Teslas, and I love that. I wish more car companies would do that to give you higher levels of regenerative braking. Now, this car does come with a couple different options. This has a dynamic suspension package, and that gives you that extra bit of control and adjustment through corners and stuff. Now, all the Gravities have air suspension, the adjustable ride height, and all that, but this just takes that to another level. Now, one thing that might take a little bit of getting used to is this steering wheel. They’ve gone with a squirkle, a square and circle. So, the tops and bottoms are shaved off. And part of the reason for that is that way it doesn’t block this gauge cluster up here. Now, that wouldn’t be the biggest deal because a lot of your controls are here off in the corner, but I do really like it and it takes no time getting used to, especially because your indicator stocks are still here. They’re mechanical buttons for the indicators. And you’ve got your shifting, your gear shifting all happens here. That’s not on the screen. This car, I think, really nails a good balance of controls in the screen while having mechanical buttons. Better than any other car I’ve seen. If you’ve seen the Lucid Air, this is going to look very familiar to you. They have their signature light bar that goes all the way across, name up on top, and a very aerodynamic profile. Obviously, this car rides much higher than the Air does, but it still maintains that really nice large frunk. Power lift. I like that. And this is kind of cool. This is a little a little seat if you wanted to enjoy a little shade. Oh, that’s actually nice to get out of the sun. Oh, that’s nice. but it has a little seat and it does have some room here. Now, this is not the biggest frunk. The F-150 Lightning and some of these other cars have bigger frunks. But there’s a reason for that because a frunk is taking up space that could be used for the cabin. And this car is all about stretching everything out and maximizing the interior space. If you option this with the tech package, you can have a 120 volt outlet to charge stuff here in the front, also in the second row and the third row. This car doesn’t have that, but you could get that as an option. Coming along the front, again, this car was made, this cutout was made to maximize that flat loading area. That’ll be a theme you’ll see throughout this car. You’ve got sensors up in front, cameras, and here’s your active arrow. This can open and close for cooling for the battery and motors. Coming along here, you’ve got a fog light and a running light here. And just like the air, you’ve got cutouts here that take the air flow that hit the front and get passed along and keep it close to the car, prevent separation, and create a kind of curtain effect where the air flows over the wheels and stays connected to the car. This car has a drag coefficient of.24. That makes this the most aerodynamic SUV you can buy. Worlds better than anything with a gas engine in it and better than any other EV as well. That’s part of the magic of how they get that 450 miles of range. Here at the wheels, we have kind of the middle of the road option, which is 21s in the front and 22s in the back. These are arrow wheels for better range. This is the option I would get sitting on all weather tires. And if you look from right here all the way along, you can just kind of see a uniform slope to the entire profile of the car all the way back here. Now, this again is all part of makes this car so slippery. Right now, the car is unlocked and the handles are out. But if I were to lock this car, you can see that nothing stands out. Everything is flush mount along the entire length of this car. And right now, it’s sitting at its highest ride height, but when it gets down low, you can just kind of see how aerodynamic it is. And finally, finishing off the aerodynamic touches, you’ve got this cut right here that keeps the air and brings it all back together again. There’s a slight taper here on the back, and this rear wing helps to bring that air and bring it back together. This area behind the car is a big source of what causes drag. As you’re pushing the air molecules around the car, what you want it to do is come back together in the back, and you want this low volume area back here to be minimized. And that’s what this car does. You can kind of see that the top is tapered in from where the wheels are and the body is and everything comes to a nice point for aerodynamics. All right, let’s talk a little bit about the ergonomics. Like I mentioned, the Squirle maybe takes 15 minutes to get used to, but I actually really like it. The steering ratio is actually really fast, meaning you don’t have to turn it very much to get this car to turn. Plus, this car has the optional rear wheel steering, which goes up to three degrees in either direction to help you make turns that much quicker. That helps in a car that’s a little bit bigger. So, Lucid says that even though the gravity is bigger than the air, it has a similar turning radius thanks to that rear wheel steering. One thing I love about this is they’ve gone with a landscape screen, which I do prefer, but the most amazing part is where it falls. Look at this. It’s like I would drive with my hand probably in this kind of position, but if I move my arm forward, it falls right onto the screen. I can reach every part of the screen so easily. And that is not the case with most cars that I drive that have like the tablet style that’s further away, you got to lift your elbow and then every bump on the road, your hands moving. This I can keep my elbow planted and I have much better control of what I’m doing. It’s a really nice user experience, too. Another thing you’ll notice right away when you get in this car is how quiet it is. The noise, vibration, harshness is really well dialed in. The car has very little wind noise or road noise and it’s really comfortable. It really is a comfortable car. In fact, let me change this to comfort mode. I am in smooth mode now. Perfect. So, I’m in the standard ride height and smooth mode. And it just makes driving these back roads effortless. And I’ve never really been a huge fan. Not not that I’m not a fan. I’ve never thought much about all the screens. I’ve never really cared too much for it. But I will say having the map up here is nice. Closer to where I need to look out the road and allows like the passenger to change the music without bothering me and the map. The map is all up there. That’s a really nice touch. I do like that. Now, you can’t drive this car without noticing this expansive canopy over my head. This is taken also from the Lucid Air. It’s quite a thing to see and look up, especially as you’re driving along these redwood forests. It’s pretty amazing. Let’s talk a little about the interior of this thing. This Lucid Gravity interior. Soft touch everywhere that you would actually interact with. Everything’s pretty soft touch. You got a microfiber kind of suede here. Soft touch. Even up and over. This is a little bit harder touch, but everything that you would actually interact with is nice and soft touch. Like you mentioned, the really cool panoramic roof here in front is is kind of a sight to behold. You got to really drive one of these and see for yourself just how cool it is, especially when you’re driving through scenic areas here in California. Here’s a interesting touch. This panel here is actually a frosted tempered glass, which is really cool. It gives it a great look. I actually kind of like the way it looks, but of course, it slides in and out of the way. Cup holders. You’ve got wireless charging over here and a nice little pad. And this entire thing slides up and out of the way to give you even more room. You can kind of see just how massive this is. And the area goes even further than you can see all the way back here. Tons and tons of room. And that’s what you want. I’ve never understood why EVs have dials and stuff right here. This is prime real estate. You can store so much in here. Why would you waste it with gear shifts and things? That should all go up and out of the way. So that’s why I mentioned before this is the best combination I’ve ever seen of any car in terms of mechanical tactile buttons like this. These rockers and touchscreen controls. You can also do everything here on the screen if you want. Best of both worlds. So this is where I’d be driving, right? I got comfortable. I got leg room for days. Okay, this is my first row position. Now let’s put myself behind myself. Okay, I would be tons of leg room. It’s like 10 in. I’d probably move forward a little bit. Probably maybe to there. That’s comfortable. Okay. And then let’s try getting or behind myself. So, there’s a button here on the side for easier access. There you go. It’s a nice feature as well. Does it automatically? Now, I don’t know if you can tell on camera, but if you look, normally this is the the wheel well. This bump would be straight out. That makes it that much harder to get around. But you can see how it slimly profiles inward. And again, this opening is nice and flush on the floor. So getting in is way easier than other cars that I’ve noticed. All right, then I can pull myself back. Probably come back around. Okay. And will I fit in the third row? Absolutely. And if you look, there’s heating and cooling vents here on the bottom and up here. So all three rows are going to be comfortable. And I’ve got inches of clearance here. And I’ve got three or four inches over my head. The only car I’ve been in, an EV that I’ve been in with a third row is more roomy than this was the ID Buzz. But the ID Buzz has 200 m less of range than this. So all in I think this is the perfect combination of factors for seven passengers. Check out this folding setup. So, if you pull that down, that folds down all the way. Okay, we’ll do the same thing here. This folds the headrest and then this lets it out and pull. And look at this little mechanism that brings it down into this cubby area, which is really cool. Okay, as a result, now you have a flat floor. Again, this was your loading floor and it hasn’t changed. I can bring this back in. Beautiful. Okay, now you have 120 cubic feet of storage space. That is about the same as a Escalade, which is a much bigger car, which is about 12 in longer. Similar to that, this has more room than the Rivian and other cars in its class. Really cool. Now, if you want to go even further. Oh, you got to see what that happens. So, what’s really cool is the front seat actually goes up to make room for that to fall. This seat and this headrest would probably hit right here. Right. So, that we’re going to on this one. Watch that. I’m going to fold the second one. Seat comes up. See that? Okay. That is the second part about the obsessiveness of their engineering. Now, there is a little bit of a gap right here. That’s where the feet would go for the third row passengers, but they will sell an accessory to fill that in to give you a flat floor all the way across. But with all that down, look at how much room there is. I’m 6t tall and there’s still more room to go. And this gives you a chance to enjoy the beautiful panoramic sunroof and moon roof above you. Interior packaging is topnotch. This is one of those things that they freaking nailed. And it’s incredible how much they’ve got in a car in this form factor. [Music] So, if I told you 10 years ago, what if I could give you a car with 828 horsepower with 450 mi of range that you can charge yourself at home that requires no maintenance. It’s pure electric. It drives like a sports car and it has three rows for seven passengers. You probably wouldn’t believe me, but that’s the world we live in today. Thanks to the EV architecture and what that enables designers to do with their cars. And this being Lucid’s second car, they’ve had years of learning and they’ve made things better in every way. For example, every Gravity will ship with this, the NACS charge standard, the new standard here in North America, which means you have native support for all Tesla superchargers. And with the adapter provided, you can charge at any Electrify America or any other network. This gives you access to so much. 450 miles of range is amazing. But if you road trip with one of these things, you’ll really appreciate having access to the best charging network in North America, Teslas, probably around the world, honestly. And this car just has so much going for it. This package is truly magic. But it’s not magic. It’s great engineering. And it’s clean sheet design, vertical integration, all brought together. Now, styling is always going to be personal. Some people have said that it looks like a minivan. I personally don’t see that. I think it looks really great. I think that this design language really works on an SUV. In fact, I think this looks better even than the Air. I really like it. Now, obviously, this car is not cheap. Starting around 80 grand, this is a luxury SUV, a third row electric luxury SUV. And there are some others in the category, and the price is around that point. So, this is not for everybody, but if you’re in the market for a really highly dynamic, sporty 800 horsepower super SUV, this is a package that is nearly impossible to beat. And I have to think this has to be the industry leader in this segment at this point. So, we’ve spent the whole day with this car and there’s still so much more to talk about, but that is a really quick, rough and dirty first look at the Lucid Gravity. If you have any questions, don’t forget to like and subscribe and comment down below. And if you have been, thank you so much for watching.
