Mild Hybrid or Plug-In Hybrid?
We’ll also take a dig into the big question, mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid. This is Mazda’s 3.3 L turbocharged inline 6 engine paired with a small 48vt mild hybrid system. Think of it like a performance boost and efficiency helper. What it does is smooths out the drive, adds torque when accelerating, improves fuel economy slightly, and regenerates energy during braking. But what it doesn’t do is it doesn’t drive on the electric power motor alone and it doesn’t need charging ever. So mild hybrid means no plugs, no changing your routines, just a better performance and a more refined drive. The plug-in hybrid system combines a 2.5 4-cylinder gas engine with the 17.8 kW battery and an electric motor. You can plug it in at home and drive gas-free for up to 42 km. Now, what this does is it gives you short driving trips, fully electric, switches to gas engine when the battery is low, great for daily commutes and errands, and still works as a hybrid battery when it’s not charged. So, if your commute is under 40 km a day, you might barely end up using any gas during the week. So, if you’re always in and outside of downtown Toronto, the plug-in hybrid does give you more electric flexibility and shortens that gas bill for you as well. But if you’re more of a road tripper and don’t want to worry about charging, I would recommend the mild hybrid as it does give you strong performance and no changes in your lifestyle. In the mild hybrid, you do get sports mode, normal, and off-road mode, but in the plug-in hybrid, you do get an additional EV mode as well.
