Xiaomi YU7 First Look: Is This $35,000 Chinese EV a Tesla Model Y Killer?

Most Americans may not know about the tech brand Xiaomi, but it’s quickly making a name for itself around the globe. Sometimes referred to as China’s version of Apple, this phone maker broke China’s car market when it introduced the SU7 sedan last year. This year, we went all the way to China to see its Ferraris YU7 crossover, a car meant to challenge the Tesla Model Y directly. The Xiaomi YU7 already has more than 300,000 lockin orders and is essentially sold out in China until 2027. Pricing starts at as little as $35,000 in China, although this top-of-the-line model is closer to $47,000. The car’s software suite is self-developed by Xiaomi and shares a lot of functionality with its line of phones. It even has built-in CarPlay and Apple Music. This car has a lot of clever features like designated ports and magnetic spaces to add on userinstalled accessories like this magnetic tissue box that fits right behind the infotainment screen. Power for the Xiaomi YU7 Max trim is via a self-developed motor, cheekily called V6s, placed at either end. Together, the car produces about 680 horsepower and 0 to 60 comes in about 3 seconds. The rear seats recline a lot, more than a Mayback according to Xiaomi. The frunk is huge, and on this top-of-the-line Max version, it’s power operated. Charging isn’t slow either.
