2025 New MG S5 EV Unveiled: A Small Electric SUV with Big Value

You’re looking at the new MG S5 EV, another new challenger in the increasingly compact B-segment SUV market and the brand’s fifth EV. It rides on the same Modular Scalable Platform as the incredibly successful 4 hatchback, and MG bosses will be hoping for similar success.

The MG S5 EV’s styling is similarly conservative, largely remaining true to the MG 4’s non-aggressive looks, but spread across a slightly larger frame. It features a split grille that echoes MG’s flagship Cyberster EV, and the integrated low-beam headlights that are all the rage at the moment. At the rear, you’ll find 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, a roof bar and a full-width light bar at the rear. There’s not much to notice about the S5 EV in terms of design, and it’s equally non-aggressive in the air, with an efficient Cd of just 0.27. It will be available in six colours, including Dynamic Red, Piccadilly Blue and four other monochrome tones.

‘We’re taking a really good base for the car, adding a slightly more versatile body style, updating the interior and bringing some more modern technology into it because technology and the pace of electric vehicles is changing so quickly.’

The S5 EV will come in three variants: SE Standard Range, SE Long Range and the range-topping Trophy Long Range. The Standard Range uses a 49kWh battery for 211 miles of range, while the larger battery used in both the SE Long Range and Trophy Long Range will last for 298 miles. Charging speeds are slightly quicker at 120kW for the two 49kWh models and 139kW for the larger battery models. When paired with a 170kW motor at the rear axle, the larger battery models can hit 62mph in 6.3 seconds.

The entry-level SE Standard Range car costs £28,495, while the SE Long Range car costs £30,995. That’s £2500 more than the Long Range car and £2500 more than the £33,495 Trophy. But that does get you a few extras, such as heated front seats, a leather-style interior, an electric tailgate and a 360-degree camera.

Inside MG says the S5 EV is a step up from its predecessors and will age well – but the difference is minimal. There are two screens, a 12.8in panel for the infotainment and a 10.25in panel for the cockpit dials. Both looked sharp when we took a look at the car’s launch. The infotainment was equally capable, moving through the menus nicely.

The S5 EV has seven airbags, as well as the latest version of the brand’s adaptive cruise control, MG Pilot. Alongside them you’ll find the usual ADAS features such as forward collision warning, rear cross traffic alert and other bits. There’s also an MG Pilot Custom setting that lets you quickly and easily turn off the various legally required bongs, warnings and beeps that the S5 EV and all other new cars must have.
