Greater Victoria folks can leave their gas-guzzling vehicles at home and do their bit for the environment on Earth Day.

Travel by bus for free across the region or test drive an electric bike or scooter – the choice is yours.

In recognition of Earth Day, BC Transit has said travel will be free for both fixed-route and handyDART services on Wednesday, April 22.

“Earth Day highlights the importance of sustainability and encourages people to make choices that reduce greenhouse gases and help protect our environment,” said a news release from the organization.

“Taking public transit is one way to make a difference.”

To support a healthier, more sustainable environment, BC Transit says it has undertaken several projects over the years, including the addition of electric buses to its fleet.

As part of this work, BC Transit announced last year that 62 heavy-duty electric buses will begin operating as part of the Victoria Regional Transit System in the coming years.

Twenty-five electric buses are currently in service in Victoria, with work underway in Langford to accommodate another 16 by the fall.

Alongside BC Transit’s gesture of free bus travel, Evolve E-Bike & E-Scooter Share is offering free 30-minute rides all day in every community it serves, which includes Saanich and Langford.

Folks just need to pay the $1.25 unlock fee before taking the electric vehicle for a spin.

Evolve is also hosting a Ride Safe event at the Saanich Earth Day Festival Saturday, April 18, which will be held at 770 Vernon Ave., behind Municipal Hall and just off of the Lochside Trail, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Evolve will be offering ride demos, rider education and hands-on tips.

“The events are designed to help new and experienced riders feel more confident on e-bikes and e-scooters, especially as more people take up micromobility with the warmer weather,” said an Evolve news release.
