Mitsubishi Motors says the Outlander PHEV sold 7,794 units in Japan in FY2025, topping the PHEV category for a second year
Mitsubishi Motors says its Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) ranked first in Japan’s PHEV sales category for a second consecutive year in FY2025, with 7,794 units sold. Cumulative domestic sales of the model surpassed 100,000 units by March 2025, and the Outlander PHEV also held the top PHEV spot in Canada for three consecutive years.

First launched in 2013 as what Mitsubishi described as the world’s first plug-in hybrid electric SUV, the Outlander PHEV received a full redesign in 2021. An October 2024 update introduced an enhanced drive battery that extended electric vehicle (EV) range and improved acceleration, alongside interior and exterior design refinements.
Mitsubishi said its electrification strategy centres on PHEVs for SUVs and mid-size and larger vehicles, while battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are better suited to kei-cars and compact models used over shorter distances. The automaker said it will continue to tailor its approach to regional characteristics and usage environments, offering a lineup built around PHEVs and supplemented by BEVs and hybrid electric vehicles.
