Nissan Leaf becomes Cheapest EV in the United States!
Niss has reportedly been spending months and thousands and thousands of manh hours on working out how to save money. Like they’re trying to think of anything, absolutely anything that can save the company. Doesn’t matter how big or how small it is. So in light of that, you probably wouldn’t expect that Nissen just revealed a $25,000 electric car, which is actually pretty good. And this means that it has beat basically everyone to market with a compelling $25,000 electric car in the United States. Unfortunately, the price won’t be replicated in places like Australia, though. YouTube’s new algorithm means that you’re often not getting all of our videos in your feed. There’s 7,500. I’m pretty sure you’re probably not seeing a lot of them. In the description, there is a link to our newsletter. Click on that and you can get an update every day of all the latest news in the electric car industry. Hello my friends, welcome to the channel. I’m Sam Evans and I should provide you with some context here. Nissen has cancelled the ARA. It sold the Nissen ARA for nearly 3 years in the in the US, but because of import duties 15% now, they’ve decided to stop selling it. And well, to be fair, it wasn’t a big seller in the US anyway. Nissen is doing what Tesla had planned on doing with the Tesla Model 3, which never quite worked out. But, you know, I mean, to be fair, the Tesla Model 3 base model is a fair bit better car than this is. So, comparing the two is probably not all that accurate. But here’s the thing. The new Nissan Leaf, the 2026S, will cost $25,360 without any EV incentives, undercutting the S Plus version of the Nissan Leaf by $4,630. The Leaf S will be America’s most affordable electric car when it arrives in the spring of 2026. All versions of the new Nissan Leaf, they get a 75 kWh battery and 215 horsepower, but this version does not. It gets a smaller battery. Now, unfortunately, the EV tax credit in the US is going to end $75,000. Now, imagine if they still had that. I mean, this thing would cost like less than $18,000 if they still had the EV tax credit. Anyhow, it’s still good value regardless. And it earns the distinction of being, like I said, the most affordable EV in the US. But it’s not out to the market yet. And you do have to consider there is a bit of risk involved here considering that according to all the algorithms, Nissan is the most likely car company in the world to go bankrupt. And that could affect you because have a look at owners of Fisca EVs, what they’ve had to do to try and fix their vehicles. It’s quite a big challenge for them when they have issues. Anyhow, which other model of car might be a legitimate rival in terms of affordability to this Chevy Bolt? That could be. Now, I did a video on the new Chevy Bolt. I’ll put a link in the description, but this could be a similar price. I think the Bolt’s going to be slightly more expensive, but you never know. Maybe they’ll bring out a $25,000 version. Now, unfortunately, we don’t have full specifications for this new affordable Leaf, but range will be less than the 303 miles you get with the current Nissen Leaf. And the reason we know it’s going to be less than 303 mi, by the way, guys, 303 mi EPA range. It’s about six nearly 600 km WLTP range outside of the United States. That’s pretty good range. Yeah. But like I said, much less range with this new version because it’s a much smaller battery. It’s a 52 kWh battery. So, it’s what 23 kwatt hours smaller. It’s also got less power, which is probably a good thing if you got a smaller battery. Should help improve efficiency. It’s got 130 kW motor producing 174 horsepower. When is it coming? Well, apparently it’s coming to US showrooms in the spring of 2026, and that schedule puts its launch several months after the other trims of the Nissan Leaf, which mostly they’re not available yet either. Now, the Nissan Leaf has gone on sale in markets outside of the US, all trims, I believe, in many markets outside the US, but interestingly, it’s way better than its predecessor. I mean, it’s a much much much better car. It has more range. It’s bigger on the inside. It’s got better software. It’s more efficient. It’s not one of the most efficient cars I should mention as well. Uh, in fact, it’s efficiency is something we don’t want to talk about when it comes to this and Leaf, but it’s still a much better car than the previous generation. According to Nissen, the Leaf now holds the lowest starting MSRP of any EV in the country. And yeah, I mean, looking at these prices, the previous generation of the Leaf S was 28,000. It’ll now be 25,000. Uh, the previous generation of the Nissan SV Plus was 36,000. That version of the car, the new version is $34,000. Nissen managed to keep the S+ trim at just under the psychological $30,000 mark, which is a pretty big accomplishment. I don’t honestly understand how Nissen could be making any profit at all on the $25,000 version. Anyhow, as you can see, the two versions we have of the old version and the new version, both of them, both of the new ones are cheaper than the old version. And like I said, the new version is a much better car with more range. Speaking of range, let’s have a look at those details. The S+ and the SV Plus and Platinum trims have the bigger 75 kWh battery which delivers up to 303 mi of range. That’s 488 km EPA estimated range. So that’s going to be a real world range that you really will achieve. These versions come with a more powerful motor producing 215 horsepower or 160 kW. The base S trim 52 kWh battery 174 horsepower. So, you can see there’s quite a difference between the base version and I guess it brings the question up, should you spend an extra $45,000 to get that bigger battery and getting a bit more power at the same time as well? I probably personally would. On the charging front, every US market Nissan Leaf, unlike international versions, gets a Knack port for Tesla Supercharger access and supports vehicle to load functionality. Nissan Leafs that are sold outside the US don’t have a knack port. They have CCS2. Unlike the old Nissen Leaf which had Chadmo or Cado, the Leaf’s redesign moves the model into fastback crossover territory. So this, you know, it’s more aerodynamic actually than the previous Nissan Leaf. It has a 173.4 in body that cuts a more aerodynamic profile than the hatchbacks it than the hatchback it replaces. LED lighting is standard on all models. Platinum Plus gains exclusive tail lights inspired by the Nissen Z. Uh wheel options, base model, steel 18in inch wheels. I guys, I don’t know any other car on the market other than maybe some cheap pickup trucks that have steel 18in rims. It’s actually a good idea. I mean, really, even though it look great, probably makes sense. You can get error covers on it as well. Now, that’s a in my opinion, that’s a good deal. You’re getting error covers for free here. I think many cars, in fact, most cars you buy now don’t get error covers, and they should. All EVs standard, all of them should come with error covers. I just don’t understand why they don’t. So, Nissan Leaf gets them. Plus, the SV Plus gets 18in rims, 19in rims on the Platinum Plus. So, that Platinum Plus is going to get a little bit less range. It gets slightly less than 300 mi of range. It’s losing nearly nearly 20 mi of range because of those bigger rims. Niss says the cabin is roomier than before, helped by a flat floor and newly designed seats. And up front, every trim comes with a digital cockpit. The SNS Plus feature 12.3 in displays. The SV Plus and Platinum Plus get 14.3 in screens. Top of the range Platinum Plus sets itself apart with a panoramic roof that can shift from transparent to opaque at the touch of a button. I love that. I don’t know why. I just think that’s really cool. It also adds a heads-up display, multiolor ambient lighting, a motion activated power liftgate, and a 10 speakeraker Bosey audio system. A full suite of driver assistance features is included across the lineup, apparently for every model. Deliveries of the 2026 Nissan Leaf in the US are be going to begin fall 2025. Launches are planned in Japan, Europe, and Australia for either the final quarter of 2025 or the first quarter of 2026. Charging speed is 150 kW. And to be honest, this is not a state-of-the-art EV in any way, shape, or form. Efficiency, n. Um, range, it’s not bad. It’s okay, but not up there with the best. Charging speed, not great, to be honest. But it is actually pretty good value. And this is not trying to say, hey, this is the best car EV you can buy. It’s not the best in any segment. It’s not the best at anything, but it’s a good allaround car. In Australia, though, it’s going to be tough because they priced it at a price point that’s sort of similar to some other cars that I think are better from China. For example, the XP G6, uh, Zika 7X, Tesla Model Y, it’s almost at that price level, and that’s not going to work. But in the US, it’s priced extremely well, and I think it’ll be quite a success. A lot of people in the US don’t know about Niss’s financial position, so they’re not aware of the risk they’re taking when buying a new car from Nissen. Let’s be honest. Um, basically every algorithm says Nissen will go bankrupt within the next three and a half years. Some of them say 2 years. Now, I don’t know if that’s going to happen. I don’t know if Nissen will be around to support these EVs. They might be. Maybe they won’t go bankrupt. Maybe someone will step in and actually save them. I don’t think that’s probable, though. And that’s the only reason I would suggest not buying this car. Other than that, I think this car is actually worth the money. I think it’s absolutely worth the money, but just not worth that risk of not having the ability to get it fixed and looked after properly, which is what, you know, is a big part of the whole buying experience.
