$2,000 Motor in a $20 Bike

I bought the most powerful ebike mid drive conversion kit in the world and the cheapest bike on Facebook Marketplace. What happens when you put eight times the legal power limit into a $20 bike, a $200 bike, and a $1,000 bike? Starting with the $20 bike, this took me over a month of lowballing on Facebook Marketplace to secure. It’s a classic BMX brand with a brake, a chain, and tires that hold air, which is the absolute most you can expect for $20. The electric bike conversion kit I’m using is the CYC X1 Pro Gen 4, the most powerful mid drive conversion kit ever made, paired with their biggest battery, the CYC A65. Of course, if you wanted to, you could convert a bike to push more than the insane 6,000 W of power in this kit, but then you’d be in DIY territory or using hub motors, which suck. Just getting started with this conversion, I’m realizing a huge problem. The bottom bracket on BMX bikes is way bigger than the kit is designed for. This spacer is the size the bracket should be, and there’s no way I’m going to be able to do this alone. So, I’m rolling over to Tim at Mayhem Racing. Mayhem has some of the sickest merch. You know, I got to represent. Tim’s loving the wheelie fun bike, but it’s time to grind. He’s sizing everything out before cutting two squares of steel. He’s tacking the two squares together, and I’m already lost, but trusting the process. While Mr. T gets his breakfast in, Tim’s drilling a small hole through the two squares, and then a larger hole. What pops out are two identical, perfectly sized spacers that you can’t just buy from a store. These are exactly what I need to adapt the kit to the BMX bracket. Tim is sanding away the paint so he can weld the spacers into place. [Music] A little bit of clear coat and the motor fits on perfectly. But we are concerned the chain will pop off with this alignment. So Tim’s throwing on a fresh chain and chain tensioners to angle the wheel enough to compensate for the misalignment. Low rosters are cleaning up the shavings and the bike is ready to come back to my garage to complete the conversion, which is just one bracket, the spindle, cranks, and battery. The A65 battery is designed to fit most standard bike frames, but for this BMX, I’ll need to mount it on top using the included rail system, which straps into place with these metal bands. The battery then slides in and is secured with two bolts. But we have another really big problem. The battery leads are not even close to long enough to reach the battery. So, I’m harvesting this spare surround harness for the extension. I’m removing the casing, cutting the battery connector, and stripping the negative and positive wires. Stripping the other ends of the cut as well, so I can connect the donor wires, which are also getting stripped on both ends. At this point, I have no idea what I’m doing. I am merging the wires together in a way I’m confident is incorrect and then dropping the most abominable solder boogers. I just ran out of electrical tape on the first one, but I’m going on to the next three connections I need to make. I’m doing the best I can with this $8 solder kit and duct tape. Dropping whatever boogers I can to keep these wires half connected. And hey, from the outside it doesn’t look too bad. I just need to install the display and the thumb throttle. Plugging in the battery. I’m bracing for sparks. But the bike turns on and the wheel spins. So, I’m feeling very accomplished. This might be the fastest BMX bike ever built and certainly the cheapest bike to ever run 6,000 W of power. Tim nailed the bottom bracket. I’ll take credit for the wire extensions if they last. And everything just came together really nice. $2,000 power kit on a $20 bike. It should be priceless. I got to say, it looks badass. It fits surprisingly well. Here we go. Usually I start in the highest power mode. I’m actually going to start in the lowest power mode for once. I’m going to ease in on it. I got the EI Pro. He’s going to try to keep up. Full throttle. [ __ ] sketchy with the brakes. I can’t slow down at all actually. Dude, there’s too much power. 3 2 1 go. Smoke. You don’t want this smoke. Come on. Can you do that? No. I’ll go easy on you. Okay. [Music] Next up is the $200 bike, which is a beautiful N-speed Cannondale with hydraulic disc brakes and suspension. It’s a much better candidate for conversion. But the biggest pedal bike ride of the year is tomorrow. So, I’m jumping right into the $1,000 bike, and I’ll give the $200 bike away instead of destroying it like the $20 bike. This $1,000 bike is the dime from Throne. In my eyes, the perfect pedal bike for the street. Back in 2019, I had to move for the summer and I couldn’t bring my Suron. I only had $200 for a bike and I ended up with a total piece of [ __ ] If I had no budget at the time, this would have been exactly what I wanted. Front suspension, hydraulic disc brakes, 10-speed gears, and Maxis hookworms. I already feel bad for what I’m about to do to my dream pedal bike. Just like the $20 bike, I’m stripping the whole bottom assembly, except this time the kit should fit perfectly without any custom fabrication. This kit, the X1 Pro Gen 4, fits almost any pedal bike in the world, except for BMX bikes, which I now just learned at the same time as you. I was not running the full 6 kW of power on the $20 bike out of pure self-preservation. But on this bike, I am turning it up all the way to maximum power. And combined with the 10-speed gears, I should be able to maximize my torque and top speed. 6 kW is the power of a Suron, and we’re putting this into a pedal bike. The bolts for the water bottle holder work perfectly to anchor the battery rail to the frame, but I’m still using the metal bands and cutting them so they don’t cut me first. The battery slides right in and connects without any extensions needed. The thumb throttle and display are mounted. And the last thing I’m doing is swapping the brakes so I can rear brake with my left hand. To make this work, the levers are now mounted upside down, which is super stupid and bad, but we got a ride to get to. The bike looks so dialed. Two chains. The battery fills the frame perfectly. The motor is see-through like a Rolex. I would have gotten the black version of this bike, but I needed to do another white-on-white wrap coming up in this video. I’m driving downtown to the pedal bike mega ride where I’m meeting up with raw stunts on his RTR light from Ronster Rides and Jim on his wheelie fun bike. Very first ride on the conversion. We’re going straight to the ride out. There’s no way I don’t have a front brake right now. It was working at the garage. So much power. I’m barely touching the throttle. It feels great. What the [ __ ] No, something’s going wrong. The hell is that? Maybe it’s the gear I’m in. [ __ ] God damn it. Oh, [ __ ] Damn. I didn’t even make it to the ride. That’s one of the best wheeling bikes because of that full twist throttle and how light it is. Let’s give it a try on this thing. Definitely enough torque man.
