    Interesting part here:
    ———–

‘Volvo, the Swedish carmaker owned by a Chinese company, plans to sell a Chinese-made EV in the U.S. beginning this summer, at a relatively budget-friendly starting price of under $35,000. (Volvo says it’s paying the tariff; the company did not comment when asked about reports that it will be refunded that money in exchange for exporting U.S.-made vehicles.)’

Because it is not in our national interest to allow this. The only reasons you allow foreign makers or suppliers of anything into your domestic market, are because they supply something you don’t make or to provide *some* competition. You don’t do it so foreign suppliers can destroy a local industry and that is what would happen.

Because there are a lot of auto jobs in swing states

Fuck that I’m not gonna support china more than I already do. Not a good idea to allow that here. But that’s just me.

Protectionism for an obsolete industrial vision that will destroy our biosphere.

American movies, games, and tv shows are amazing, why Chinese consumers can watch them freely? The American social media and search engines are great, why Chinese consumers can’t use them? The American financial industry are powerful, why the Chinese consumers can’t use them? Bla bla bla……

It’s ok the rest of us will enjoy the cheap stuff! You just close your borders to it all. That’s a good strategy!

American car maker have everything they need to compete. They have a background of very generous subsidies guaranteed for years ahead. They have access to cheap labor through their Mexican plants. Wonder how long consumer will still be patient why they are sitting on their hands.

  9. scooterca85

It doesn’t make any sense considering we don’t close our borders to anything or anyone else that wants to enter our country.

White House want you to know China can’t make cars that all. White House is protecting you getting harm. /s

Because they are heavily subsidized by the Chinese government for the sole purpose of wiping out competition and taking over the entire market. The practice is called “dumping” and is extremely commonly used by Chinese to dominate particular markets.

China also artificially holds their currency value down to make it more enticing for foreign purchasers to spend money in China.

Allowing those cars to be sold in the US would be a trojan horse and would cause a bloodbath for the US auto market.

Please replace the word “cheap” with the words “more cost-effective”.

China has expensive EVs too, it’s just that the West tries to portray Chinese EVs as “cheap” because they can’t compete.

  13. kanchopancho

Japan makes cheap cars too. You have to just decide if you want any manufacturing capacity here in the us. Let them all in duty free and you can say goodbye to the rest of our jobs

  14. Why buy Chinese copycats funded by communist country subsidies and powered by slave labor inside China. #NoThanks!

  15. Almaegen

I’m sorry we don’t want CCP funded economic weapons in our nation.  But go ahead and enjoy that cheap EV, I’m sure all the people those cars cooked alive in China enjoyed it up until it caught their families on fire after a minor accident.

Well we don’t want to lose jobs to a military dictatorship that forces long hours, low wages, no work rules, no unions, no democracy, no free press, no health care, no retirement, no eco regs.

Adding in all those factors would explain why Chinese products are so cheap vs. rest of the world.

  17. RobertETHT2

Maybe, They have an execute code. Think what hundreds of thousands receiving their code at one time would be like. Clean up in asile America.

  18. sonsoflarson

I hope we get Chinese EVs in Canada, but with American political pressure it might not be an option sadly.

  19. jawshoeaw

This has been discussed ad infinitum. The real question is why American car companies aren’t making them. And If you keep giving your money to china don’t be surprised when you lose your own job someday

  20. kimisawa1

They will not pass our safety requirements.
