Fool cells. That’s all they ever were. The good news is the technology is now advanced by another few years of investment in engineering and packaging. When hydrogen becomes economically viable some time in the 400% capacity renewable future, we can pull this technology out of the camphor chest and get it back into production.

I was mildly disappointed when a [one of my favourite science vloggers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWAO3vUn7nw) did episodes on fuel cell vehicles and they were clearly just producing a script that was written for them by the company.

At least [Linus Tech Tips bothered to run the numbers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNgZ6xL_An4) and figured it wasn’t a tech ready for wide adoption just now.

One day, Hydrogen. Just not today. We can still be friends though.

    edit to add:

IMHO there’s a significant change required for hydrogen refuelling stations. Part of the issue is highlighted in the article, and I suspect that in a weird bizarro world mirror of electric vehicles the future of hydrogen fuelling is liquid-heated hoses. The hydrogen cools things down so you need to heat up the nozzle surrounds to prevent ambient humidity turning to ice. Perhaps the de-icing could be accomplished with hot, dry air blown over the fitting rather than a liquid cooling mechanism?

I don’t know I’m just some luddite in my arm chair complaining about the world.

aside from James May buying out of curiosity and to make videos (bless him!) everyone who bought one needs their heads examining

Toyota keeps humiliating themselves in order to avoid EVs. They could have maximized the Prius Prime if they wanted to keep up *and* satisfy their petro overlords. Will they become the next Nokia or Kodak?

  4. That is kind of the owners fault for not knowing what they were buying. Biggest issues always have been lack of refueling stations plus no matter what you are still forced to buy it from a station and just like gas you have to pay whatever they charge. Unlike an EV that you can charge in your driveway or anywhere in the country, then you can even install solar to charge it at little no cost. I have also read although fuel cell problems aren’t common they are unrepairable by dealerships and they just have to buy the car back and give them another one. So you don’t ever want to own one outside of warranty.

Now I have seen the cost has gone up to over $200 per tank if you can find a working dispenser and they have enough to fill it up. The freezing up pump problem isn’t easy to fix, liquid hydrogen needs to be stored around -400F and when a gas is pumped though a high pressure pump into a low pressure container like in a car the temperature drops.

You need your head looking at if you went for these cars regardless of incentives. Most of the hydrogen is from fossil fuels so not green at all.

Don’t worry folks Toyota has solid state batteries just round the corner. That will save them. /s

Can buy a Mirai or a Tesla for $9k, I got the Tesla

I wonder how are Toyota’s hydrogen technology doing in Japan? Passenger cars, buses? If it’s possible, Japan would have the strongest motivation to make it happen.

No-one could have seen that coming…
