Tesla rarely waits for traditional model-year transitions to roll out hardware revisions. Instead, it treats assembly lines as a constantly evolving environment where parts get updated as soon as better engineering is validated (and existing stock is used up). The latest continuous improvement to roll off the floor targets the Cybertruck’s side repeater cameras.
Tesla lead Cybertruck engineer Wes Morrill shared the update on X, giving owners an up-close look at the newly designed housings for the side repeater cameras. Morrill explained that Tesla regularly tweaks parts for cost, serviceability, and performance. He noted that the new Cybertruck repeater housing relies on passive aerodynamics to disrupt airflow, helping channel rainwater and spray away from the camera lens while driving without adding any additional cost.
Passive Aerodynamics Over Camera Washers
Keeping camera lenses clean is vital for Tesla’s driver-assistance suite, and even more so for Full Self-Driving (Supervised), especially during heavy rainstorms.
Unlike the front bumper camera, which features its own dedicated washer, the Cybertruck’s side repeaters don’t have integrated fluid spray nozzles. While Tesla introduced dedicated camera washers on the purpose-built Cybercab and retrofitted Model Y robotaxis, that plumbing is yet to make its way to production Cybertrucks.
Tesla engineers solved the issue through clever plastic molding instead. A side-by-side comparison of the old and new fender inserts reveals distinct aerodynamic channels.
The original assembly sat completely flush inside a smooth, triangular indentation in the black wheel arch cladding. The revised housing introduces sculpted ridges and a sharp vertical fin right next to the lens. This passive lip disrupts the high-speed air rushing along the front fenders, deflecting water droplets and road grime before they can coat the glass.
Continuous Mid-Cycle Revisions
This subtle camera tweak is part of a steady stream of rolling hardware improvements across not just the Cybertruck but Tesla’s entire consumer lineup.
When Tesla develops a new part, it famously swaps in the updated component as soon as older inventory is depleted. Just last month, Tesla similarly upgraded the Cybertruck underbody with carbon fiber composite trays to replace stamped aluminum panels, improving underside durability during off-road rock crawling.
These rolling manufacturing updates also arrive amid shifting pricing for the vehicle. Tesla raised Cybertruck prices by $5,000 across all dual-motor configurations a couple of weeks ago, bringing the truck’s starting price up to $74,990.
By incorporating passive aerodynamic geometry into everyday components, Tesla is showing how it can keep its vision systems clearer in wet weather without adding complex mechanical pumps or wiring harnesses. If the new repeater camera housings prove effective at keeping lenses clear, Tesla might add them to other vehicles in the future.
