BYD (USOTC:BYDDY) reported higher global vehicle sales for a fourth consecutive month in August, with increased overseas shipments accompanying softer demand in its domestic Chinese market.

Total vehicle sales increased 17.8% year over year to 440,293 units during August, while overseas shipments rose 134.5% to 189,466 vehicles, according to Reuters calculations based on the company’s disclosure on Tuesday.

Overseas markets account for growing share of BYD sales

BYD has continued to expand outside China, including in markets across Europe and Southeast Asia, as the electric vehicle manufacturer increases its international operations.

The company’s overseas business also represented a larger share of its financial performance during the first half of the year. From January through June, BYD generated more revenue internationally than in China for the first time, with increased vehicle exports contributing to gross profit margins.

The expansion comes as competition within China’s electric vehicle market remains high.

Brazil remains key market for international expansion

Brazil, BYD’s largest market outside China, has become an important part of the company’s overseas operations.

BYD is preparing to introduce its first locally produced plug-in hybrid flex-fuel vehicle in the country as it expands its manufacturing presence in Latin America’s largest automotive market.

The planned launch follows increased demand in Brazil and forms part of BYD’s broader international manufacturing and sales expansion.

BYD reports first quarterly profit increase in more than a year

Growth in international markets has coincided with weaker profitability conditions in BYD’s domestic market.

The company reported its first quarterly increase in profit in more than a year during the second quarter, although the improvement was below expectations.

Competition in China’s automotive market remained a factor during the period, while increased overseas sales continued to provide BYD with a larger source of revenue outside its home market.
