BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced that zero-tolerance enforcement has started today, Aug. 28, on illegal motorcycles, dirt bikes and e-bikes.
Earlier this year, the BCSO released guidelines which govern e-bikes, motorcycles and dirt bikes in the area, which were meant to educate the public on the statutes.

During traffic stops on e-bikes, deputies would hand out the guidelines to riders.
Now, deputies will issue tickets, citations and potential seizure of the bikes.
“Lives are being put at risk, and we are making every effort to address this issue before someone gets hurt, not react after a tragedy has taken place,” Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar said. “Dirtbikes are not road vehicles, and they simply don’t belong on the highway or roads in our community.”
“We’re not after riders lawfully navigating our community’s streets and roads, our concern is on juveniles treating dirtbikes like cars, joyriding through the streets and putting not only their own lives at risk, but the lives of our fellow residents.”
