Tesla is known for continuously tweaking its manufacturing lines to extract additional efficiency and durability from existing production builds rather than waiting for model-year refreshes to introduce upgrades. One of the latest hardware iterations replaces the Cybertruck’s stamped aluminum underbody panels with composite carbon fiber trays.
The hardware change came to light after Coleton Guerin (@OutofSpecDetail), a creator on the Out of Spec automotive channel, spotted the new composite pieces while detailing a recently delivered Cybertruck. He shared the discovery on X, posting:
“When did @cybertruck get carbon fiber underbody panels? Working on a brand new CyberBeast and noticed the carbon trays both front and rear, right under the motors”
Extra Durability and Airflow Gains
Tesla’s lead Cybertruck engineer, Wes Morrill (@wmorrill3), responded directly to confirm the running production update and explain the engineering reasoning behind the swap:
“It’s a new material. Testing showed it to be more durable than the aluminum while being lower weight and cost. Also slight efficiency improvement since we can better form the areas around the bolts to keep the underbody airflow cleaner than what stamped aluminum allows.”

The swap from stamped aluminum to molded carbon fiber solves a few engineering challenges at once. Carbon fiber composite allows factory teams to mold cleaner contours directly around mounting bolts and underbody structural points. Smoother contours reduce air turbulence underneath the chassis, yielding small aerodynamic gains for highway efficiency.
Additionally, composite trays offer superior impact resistance against flying road debris and rough off-road impacts without adding unnecessary mass or the cost of Tesla’s Terrestrial Armor Package for off-roading. Because carbon fiber trays cost less to produce at scale while saving weight, substituting the material improves both vehicle range and overall manufacturing efficiency.

Continuous Production Tweaks and Fleet Support
Running production upgrades are standard practice for Tesla’s assembly lines. Rather than waiting for traditional model-year updates, hardware improvements roll onto the assembly line as soon as testing validates the parts and supply is secured.
This underbody upgrade comes on the heels of major safety recognitions for the Cybertruck. The vehicle continues to prove its structural strength on paper and on the road, with the Cybertruck recently named the safest pickup truck of 2026 across not just electric but also gas-powered truck segments.

At the same time, Tesla is also taking care of earlier production runs. Tesla recently extended the Cybertruck PCS warranty to 8 years to address early Power Conversion System failures on pre-2026 models, offering full repair reimbursements for owners who previously paid out of pocket.
Switching out aluminum underbody shields for lighter, tougher carbon fiber trays proves that Tesla is actively refining its stainless steel pickup to make it stronger and more efficient with every build that rolls off the line.
