On Tuesday, June 23, the Dare County Board of Education will meet in a special session that will include a Second Reading of a proposed policy that would ban the operation of E-Bikes on school property.

The First Reading of the policy took place at a June 8 Board of Education meeting, and the members are likely to vote on the policy at the upcoming meeting.

The school policy comes amid a renewed discussion of regulating E-Bikes, both at the local level and in the NC General Assembly. In April, Dare County prohibited the operation of E-Bikes at Dare County Parks & Rec parks, citing “safety issues” that included reckless speeding and spinning tires.

On June 11, the Dare County Sheriff’s Office announced it was “increasing patrol presence to monitor E-Bike use to ensure safety for everyone,” adding that the department “receives numerous complaints throughout the county.” The Outer Banks Voice – Citing ‘numerous complaints,’ Dare Sheriff to increase monitoring of E-Bike use

And in response to a Voice inquiry, officials in four Dare County municipalities say they are monitoring the progress of state legislation that could give them more authority to regulate E-Bikes and pave the way for new local ordinances.
