PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (WKRC) – A driver was killed after a Tesla, which was reportedly operating on Autopilot, went off the road and entered a pond.
According to WTSP, citing the Florida Highway Patrol, 87-year-old Wesley Chapel died after his Tesla Model Y SUV, which was reportedly operating on Autopilot, went off a roadway in Pasco County, Florida, and entered a body of water.
Authorities said the vehicle went off the roadway at around 8 p.m. before striking an electrical box, entering the pond, and becoming submerged, according to the station. Chapel was recovered from the vehicle and taken to an area hospital, where he later died, per the report.
A passenger, a 75-year-old woman, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, WTSP reported.
The exact cause of the crash remains unclear.
