Which EV Actually Goes the Distance? (Real-World Range Test Results)

If you’re considering making the switch to an electric vehicle – such as the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, or Kia EV5 – you’re not alone, but it is important to understand that not every EV is created equal when it comes to range. While every electric car comes with a sticker promising a specific driving range, the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) has put these claims to the test on real roads in real-world conditions to see which ones actually deliver.

The AAA’s testing involved a 320-kilometre road trip from Melbourne to Warrnambool along the iconic Great Ocean Road to push these vehicles to their limits. The results revealed significant differences between manufacturer promises and real-world performance.

The 2025 Kia EV5 successfully delivered on its sticker promise, proving it can handle the journey as expected. However, the 2025 BYD Sealion 7, which promises 567 kilometres on paper, only managed 469 kilometres in real-world Victorian conditions, falling 17% short of its promise. Meanwhile, the 2025 Tesla Model Y came very close to its buffer, achieving 450 kilometres against a sticker claim of 466.

Real-world testing is the critical difference between knowing your EV will get you to your destination and simply hoping it will. Before you make the switch, think about the actual distances you drive and check real-world results to find the vehicle that truly goes the distance for you.
