Tesla interiors are built around the simple idea of a large touchscreen with great software. It creates a clean cabin and simplifies manufacturing, but many owners still want a heads-up display (HUD) that keeps important information directly in front of them.
A new Kickstarter project called NeuroHUD is trying to solve that problem by adding a customizable HUD designed specifically for Teslas.
Why Tesla Owners Want a HUD
In a Tesla, drivers have to glance toward the center screen to check speed, navigation, or FSD information. It works, but it also means briefly taking your eyes off the road.
A HUD solves that by placing key information directly in the driver’s line of sight, either on the windshield or on a transparent display.
What is NeuroHUD?
NeuroHUD is a heads-up display ($379) made by TrantorVision. Instead of wiring into the car or modifying the dashboard, it uses a combination of cameras and Tesla’s API to pull vehicle data.
The system reads information like speed and turn signals directly from Tesla’s screen with very low latency, while the API handles other vehicle data. Since it doesn’t require cutting wires or accessing the vehicle’s internal systems, installation is simpler than most aftermarket HUDs.
Features
NeuroHUD does more than display speed. It can show:
Users can either project the display onto the windshield or use a dedicated screen for a brighter image.
There’s also a Pro version with LTE support that allows over-the-air updates and Tesla API commands. As a bonus, the device can also control garage doors via RF signals, much like Tesla’s HomeLink. Similar to Tesla’s solution, NeuroHUD will also open your garage as you approach your home.
Customization
One of the most interesting parts of the system is the level of customization. Users can adjust the layout, resize certain elements, remove information they don’t want, and upload custom themes through a mobile app.
The company also plans to support community-created layouts that owners can share with each other.
Vehicle Compatibility
Because NeuroHUD relies on a specific footprint and an AI vision model calibrated to read the 15-inch screen, its compatibility is currently targeted at Tesla’s highest-volume vehicles. NeuroHUD is intended to support the legacy and refresh Model 3 and Model Y, as well as any version of the Cybertruck.
NeuroHUD has not confirmed whether their system is compatible with the latest Tesla change to 16” QHD displays in the Model Y, but we expect that support for that will arrive around the project’s launch.
At this stage of production, it does not support the Model S or Model X. The dashboard design and instrument cluster would require adaptation, though the developers have noted that future compatibility remains a possibility pending demand.
NeuroHUD Pricing
Positioning a product in the premium aftermarket accessory space requires a delicate balance between component quality and consumer accessibility. During the initial Kickstarter campaign, the standard base model of the NeuroHUD is priced at $379, while the Pro variant is priced in the mid-$400 range.
The development team noted that their goal was to build an exceptional device rather than a compromised budget alternative. For instance, using a sophisticated dual-camera module increases manufacturing overhead, with each camera costing up to $30.
Model 3 Finally Gets Its Heads-Up Display
Tesla was initially planning to release the Model 3 with a heads-up display, but ultimately that feature was scrapped, likely due to complexity or increased cost.
For drivers who like the idea of a heads-up display, NeuroHUD is filling in that gap with a compelling solution.
