A 14-year-old girl was seriously injured Sunday evening in a hit-and-run while riding an electric scooter near North West 94th Avenue and Highway 415, authorities said.Neighbors said they heard the aftermath.“We did hear a lot of sirens,” said Doug Wiedmeier, who lives near the scene.Wiedmeier said traffic noise and speeding are common in the area.“Get the sports cars out there, like to drive loud,” he said. “Especially crossing the intersection here, going down to the lake. A lot of times, you hear everybody just kind of open it up, throttle wide open.”Investigators said the girl was wearing a helmet when she was hit. She was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.”I know she had some substantial damage to one of her ankles. She had a broken nose and road rash,” said Lt. Mark Chance, Polk County Sheriff’s Office.Deputies said a witness driving a Tesla provided video from the vehicle, helping investigators identify the suspect. Authorities also used local Flock cameras to track the vehicle and get the license plate number.About 90 minutes after the crash, deputies arrested 18-year-old Mario Josue Palafox Manzano in connection with the hit-and-run.Authorities said the case also underscores the importance of wearing a helmet and riding safely.
