The crash reportedly happened around 5:40 p.m. Saturday, when the 12-year-old was riding the e-bike westbound in the bike lane of Del Mar Heights Road. Meanwhile, a 64-year-old man was driving a 2023 Tesla Model Y in the same direction as the e-bike in the number one lane on the same road.
According to SDPD, the 12-year-old attempted to make a left-hand turn from the bike lane onto southbound Old Carmel Valley Road and was reportedly struck by the front passenger side of the Tesla.
The e-bike rider reportedly suffered multiple brain bleeds that required surgery, in addition to a fractured clavicle. SDPD says the 12-year-old’s injuries are considered life-threatening.
Alcohol was reportedly not a factor in the crash, and SDPD is handling the investigation.
