Cyclist Deaths in Germany 2025: E-Bike Fatalities Drive Increase | Destatis - News and Statistics

According to data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Tuesday, the number of cyclists killed on German roads continued to rise in 2025. The increase is attributed to a growing number of fatalities among users of electrically assisted bicycles, commonly known as e-bikes.

Rising Fatality Numbers

In 2025, 462 cyclists died in traffic accidents, with 217 of these fatalities involving a person riding a pedelec. This represents a 3.8% increase in total cyclist deaths compared to the previous year. Over a longer timeframe, the number of cyclists killed rose by 20.6% compared to 2015. The upward trend is driven by the rising number of pedelec user deaths, which climbed from 195 in 2024 and from just 36 in 2015.

By contrast, the overall number of traffic fatalities in 2025 was 1.8% higher than in 2024 but fell by 18.4% compared to 2015. One in six (16.4%) of all people killed in road traffic last year were on a bicycle.

Older Cyclists Most at Risk

Older cyclists face a particularly high risk in traffic. In 2025, 61.5% of all cyclists killed were aged 65 or older. Among those killed on conventional bicycles without a motor, the proportion of seniors was 56.3%, while among pedelec fatalities, 67.3% were in this age group.

Role of Other Road Users

A second road user was involved in two-thirds (66.5%) of the 95,794 bicycle accidents that resulted in personal injury. In 69.8% of those cases, the other party was a car driver, accounting for 44,463 incidents. Just under one-third (31.1%) of all injury-related bicycle accidents were single-vehicle accidents with no other vehicle involved.

When another road user was involved, cyclists were deemed primarily responsible in 28.6% of injury accidents. The share varied depending on the other party: cyclists were held mainly at fault in 58.1% of collisions with pedestrians and in 54.7% of collisions with motorcycles. When a car was involved, cyclists bore the main responsibility in 25.3% of cases, and in collisions with goods vehicles, the figure was 21.4%.

Pedelec-Pedestrian Collisions

In 2025, there were 1,038 injury-related accidents between a pedestrian and a pedelec, compared to 3,399 such accidents involving a pedestrian and a bicycle without a motor. Pedelec-related collisions resulted in slightly higher injury rates: per 100 such accidents, there were an average of 16 seriously injured and 119 lightly injured people, with no fatalities. For bicycle collisions without a motor, the average per 100 accidents was 0.2 killed, 14 seriously injured, and 110 lightly injured.
