Torao Yamaba of Okayama Prefecture built the first Japanese-made car in 1904: a steam-powered wagon that could carry ten people. He sold a few, and proved Japan could build its own cars, leading to more engineers and investors coming together and starting the Japanese auto industry. This model is displayed at the Toyota Automobile Museum in Nagakute City (near Nagoya).
