An e-bike battery explosion ignited a fire at a Falmouth home Wednesday morning, displacing a family , fire officials said.

There were no injuries and a guinea pig was rescued from the second floor, Falmouth fire said in a statement.

The fire started in the garage of 259 Club Valley Drive around 7:20 a.m. when a lithium-ion battery in an e-bike failed, according to a spokesperson for the state fire marshal’s office.

Everyone inside the single-family home had evacuated by the time firefighters arrived, the department said.

Heavy fire in the garage spread to the exterior and living areas of the home, according to Falmouth fire.

Within an hour, the fire was under control and by 9 a.m. first responders overhauled the garage and wooden chimney to suppress further flames, officials said.

The house is not habitable because of smoke damage.

“E-bikes and other micromobility devices are the most common type of equipment involved in lithium-ion battery fires,” a spokesperson for the fire marshal’s office said.

State fire officials urged residents to keep e-bikes away from escape routes or points of entry for firefighters like doors, windows, and stairways.
