SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (KCAU) — As we all know, personal transportation has come a long way. From pedalling a bike to skating to your destinations, so much has changed.
With the convenience of an electric scooter or bike, a person can get where they want to faster, but with those speeds come safety concerns.
Numerous safety concerns over electric bikes and scooters have come to the attention of members of the Sergeant Bluff City Council, pressuring them to propose new rules to an ordinance more than 20 years old.

“You can’t see them till they’re buzzing right by you,” said Sergeant Bluff City Administrator Aaron Lincoln.
The new proposed rules cover e-scooters (Classes 1-4), e-bicycles (Classes 1-3 and off-road/unclassified), segways and similar devices, and miscellaneous mobility devices (electric skateboards, Onewheels, hoverboards, electric unicycles).
“The bulk of the concerns have been near misses,” said Lincoln. “Fortunately, we haven’t had any reports of accidents between scooters and vehicles. The public concerns, I think, as a whole have been ‘I almost hit this kid.’”

The city council is set to hear the final reading of the rules on April 28. If you can’t make it in person, council members still want to hear from you.
“We want to know from our citizens,” said Lincoln. “I think we’ve seen some comments from maybe other communities or other people. We are really concerned about what our residents and business owners think.”
