SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – As the weather warms up, Sioux Falls POlice say they are seeing more kids riding Ebikes and scooters.

Officers say they’re seeing a spike in unsafe riding, especially among juveniles. That includes running stop signs, riding against traffic, and weaving through intersections.

Police say these devices may look like toys, but they should be treated like vehicles under the law.

They are urging parents to step in and make sure kids understand the rules before riding.

“If we continue to see this, we continue to deal with these problems, we will resort, at some point, to ticketing. And that’s not necessarily our preferred method, but I can tell you from what we’ve seen, I would much rather write your son or daughter a ticket and try to correct this behavior than come to your house and knock on your door because they’ve been hit or struck by a car,” said Lt. Andrew Siebenborn.

Authorities also say that different types of electric bikes come with different rules, so parents and riders need to understand what rules apply to their vehicle before hitting the road.
