It is difficult to overstate China’s role in the battery supply chain. It is the world’s largest producer of batteries, whether for electric vehicles (EVs) or battery energy stationary storage (BESS). It is the world’s largest single miner of lithium and natural graphite – it is also, in both cases, the largest supplier of refined product – and the largest provider of needle coke and synthetic graphite. In rare earths, it controls over 90% of global refining capacity.
