The HX Is Haval’s Answer To The Land Rover Defender

The Haval HX will be officially unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show.

Haval’s latest model includes a 2.0-liter turbo and two electric motors.

Customer deliveries are scheduled to start in the third quarter.

Haval, one of the many brands operated by Great Wall Motor, doesn’t currently build any particularly interesting vehicles. That could be about to change. These are the first images of Haval’s latest full-size SUV, and it’s shaping up to be a rival to vehicles like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Rover Defender.

Currently known as the HX, but yet to receive its official name, the new model serves as Haval’s flagship model and will be presented at the Beijing Auto Show. It looks like a serious step-up from some of the company’s existing models, and thanks to GWM’s backing, it has the potential to be a serious player not just in China, but select international markets too.

Haval’s designers have clearly taken inspiration from some of the market’s most notable off-road-oriented SUVs, like the Defender and the YangWang U8, even showcasing it in a similar two-tone bronze-and-black paint scheme to BYD’s flagship SUV.

Big And Brash

The front includes large square headlights with a simple silver grille and a black lower bumper. Positioned above the windshield is a LiDAR, while visible along the sides are chunky door handles, thick pillars, and squared wheel arches. The HX’s rear is particularly eye-catching with rectangular LED taillights, a swing-out tailgate, and a spare wheel carrier.

Underpinning the HX is the GWM One architecture, and it will initially be sold as a plug-in hybrid incorporating a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and two electric motors. Power details haven’t been finalized, but we know there’s an all-wheel drive system and an intriguing four-speed automatic transmission.

Like most new cars coming out of China, Haval’s latest product will also include some self-driving features. This will include GWM’s Navigate On Autopilot function that works both in urban settings and on highways. It will also include autonomous parking features.

Pricing details have yet to be confirmed, but the HX will reportedly launch towards the end of Q3. In addition to being sold in China, there’s a good chance it will be exported overseas.
