SPOKANE, Wash. — County commissioners will vote next week on which type of electric bikes will be allowed on trails.
Spokane County Parks, Recreation, and Golf is proposing the regulations. Right now, any electric bike is prohibited on county – owned outdoor spaces. They mention they recognize that bikers use them anyway and would like to regulate which ones are acceptable.
There are three types of e-bikes: Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3. The county wants to prohibit the use of Class 2 electric bikes, which is the only bike that is not pedal-assisted and has a throttle.
When a biker uses that throttle, it can launch the bike’s motor to high speeds and damage trails and grass.
Spokane County Parks, Recreation, and Golf, say that Class 2 bikes can be so powerful, they cause damage to grassy parks and trails, as well as violates speed limits set in place.
“We hope, through these changes and improved signage, that we can help to reduce that type of inappropriate activity,” Chase said.
There will be a hearing on April 14ths at the County’s Public Works building on whether or not these regulations will be updated.
