Travis County is holding back part of its tax incentive deal with Tesla.

On Tuesday, commissioners voted to give the company about 91% of the tax rebates tied to the Gigafactory. The rest of the rebates, 9%, were withheld due to incomplete documentation from Tesla.

County leaders say Tesla exceeded requirements for creating jobs and opportunities in Travis County, but claim some details on safety, wages and environmental standards were missing from the company’s reporting.

“Moving forward we have to continue to demand accountability in future compliance conversations,” said Travis County Commissioner Ann Howard. “I’m grateful for the good, but it comes at a price and we have to be accountable to the people for that.”

The rebate package for Tesla is estimated to be worth at least $14 million over 10 years. KVUE has reached out to Tesla for comment, but we haven’t heard back.
